Stromness, South Georgia 4K

Stromness is an abandoned whaling station on the northern coast of South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic. It was the destination of Sir Ernest Shackleton's rescue journey in 1916. It is the central of three harbours in the west side of Stromness Bay, South Georgia.

The name Fridtjof Nansen or Nansen appeared for this harbour on some early charts, but since about 1920, the name Stromness has been consistently used. Its name, Stromness, derives from the similarly named town in the Orkney Islands, Scotland.

In 1907, a floating factory was erected in Stromness Harbour; a land station was built in 1912. From 1912 until 1931, Stromness operated as a whaling station, the first manager of which was Petter Sørlle. In 1931 it was converted into a ship repair yard with a machine shop and a foundry. It remained operational until 1961, when the site was abandoned. The Whaling Station had previously shut down when whales became endangered and laws were enacted forbidding the hunting of whales.

In 1916, Ernest Shackleton and a small crew landed on the unpopulated southern coast of South Georgia at King Haakon Bay after an arduous sea voyage from Elephant Island in the 22-foot (6.7 m) lifeboat, James Caird. Shackleton, along with Tom Crean and Frank Worsley, then trekked across South Georgia's mountainous and glaciated interior in an effort to reach help on the populated northern shore of the island.

After 36 hours of crossing the interior, they arrived at the Stromness administration centre which also was the home of the Norwegian whaling station's manager. This building has been dubbed the Villa at Stromness because it represents relative luxury compared to its surroundings. All men were rescued from Elephant Island.

In the decades following its closure, Stromness has been subject to damage from the elements and many of its buildings have been reduced to ruins. However, recent efforts have been made to restore the Villa and clean up debris from the rest of the site in order to make it safe for visitors. Outside of Stromness is a small whalers' cemetery with 14 grave markers.

South Georgia - wildlife and heritage

Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).

This mini-documentary explores the wildlife of South Georgia, a UK Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. It is a rugged, rocky isle, but home to some of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. Colonies of over half a million king penguins congregate on its shores, along with millions of fur seals, elephant seals, albatrosses and petrels. The island harbours such concentrations of wildlife because, unlike Antarctic, South Georgia is not surrounded by ice during winter. An ambitious rodent eradication project has been undertaken, and it is hoped that South Georgia may harbour even greater numbers of animals in the future.

This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

CRAZIEST PLACE WE'VE EVER BEEN! - South Georgia Island Vlog Pt 1

It's been called the greatest wildlife show on earth, and after travelling to South Georgia with One Ocean Expeditions this year we couldn't agree more!

This spectacular and remote island in the subantarctic is home to millions of king penguins, elephant seals, albatross, fur seals and plenty more fascinating species. Visiting South Georgia allows you to get up close with many of these creatures, and the interactions will leave you speechless.

Jason Harbour - South Georgia

Jason Harbour - South Georgia. On a a recent Swoop visit to this remote island, John, one of Swoop Antarctica's polar specialists spent time hanging out with the many fur seals along this dramatic coast line.

South Georgia

I was very fortunate to get a position as videographer on a trip to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctica Peninsula. Here is a chapter from a 50 minute video i made whilst on the trip. The Video had to be edited and formatted to DVD by the end of the trip so the passengers could take it home. It was chaotic to say the least trying to edit storm footage on the ship whilst running in a force 10 storm! A fantastic experience ! Loved it... Enjoy

Ocean Adventurer Antarctic Cruise: Grytviken Whaling Station South Georgia

(Filmed before Pandemic)

Very few expedition ships sail to South Georgia filled with wonderful sights. TIP: It is also more expensive than the typical 1 week cruise down to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Grytviken was the largest whaling station on South Georgia. From 1904-1966, the British hauled whales ashore into huge processing plants, which ran night and day. It is temporarily inhabited during the summer by a few staff who manage the South Georgia Museum and small shop. Yay. One of the few shopping opportunities in the Antarctic!

Grytviken, South Georgia Island

Peaceful afternoon on Grytviken. Taken Jan 5 2013, during an expedition celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Geological Society of America. We were extremely fortunate to be joined on our visit by Tim and Pauline Carr, who lived on South Georgia Island for about 16 years (most right here at Grytviken). Shackleton is buried here, and Tim and Pauline worked very hard to restore (and save) the Lutheran Church that you see in the background.

Sir Ernest Shackleton one of the GREATEST explorers, South Georgia ( AT THE END OF THE WORLD)

Grytviken was the largest whaling station on South Georgia, part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic.

Sir Ernest Shackleton visited South Georgia several times during his Antarctic expeditions. Shackleton died unexpectedly in 1922 from a heart attack at the beginning of a new Antarctic expedition. His widow chose South Georgia as his final resting place. He was buried at Grytviken and a toast (with Whisky preferably) at his grave is a tradition with travellers.????

Virtual Flight | South Georgia Island (UK/Sandwich Islands) | Microsoft Flight Simulator

South Georgia is an island in the southern Atlantic Ocean that is part of the British Overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The main settlement is Grytviken. South Georgia is 167.4 kilometres (104 mi) long and 1.4 to 37 km (0.9 to 23.0 miles) wide.[1] It is about 830 km (520 mi) northeast of Coronation Island and 550 km (340 mi) northwest from Zavodovski Island, the nearest South Sandwich island.

In 2020, the A68a iceberg headed for the island of South Georgia and could potentially run aground on the coast. If the iceberg stranded on the island prevent penguins and seals from hunting and foraging and could cause an ecological disaster. A68a is a giant weighing hundreds of billions of tons and it would take an estimated ten years for the piece of ice to melt. In 2021 the iceberg broke up in pieces, before reaching the island.
