The Best Way to Walk Around Greifswald, Germany
Greifswald / Germany is a city in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, around 80 km from the Polish border to the east. Greifswald became part of the Hanseatic League in In 1278 and was a part of Sweden's northern german territories (from 1648 to 1815).
We start our tour of Greifswald at the market place. Many of the buildings of the old town are well preserved. Greifswald Cathedral of St.Nikolai is one of the main sights yet we head outside the old town to see some of the city walls before continuing the tour inside the center.
Back in the city center, we see also walk along some more modern streets yet it is all rather relaxed as we head to the Ryck river. This river provided both the medieval Hanseatic port. Natural salt evaporation ponds were also working with its water.
We walk along the river Ryck where some fish restaurants are open for fresh seafood. The rive heads to the Baltic Sea yet we head towards the Museumswerft. There we have a view of the Museum harbor and Fangenturm and end our tour.

Greifswald , officially the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald (German: Universitäts- und Hansestadt Greifswald), is a city in northeastern Germany.
It is situated in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at an equal distance of about 250 kilometres (160 mi) from Germany's two largest cities, Berlin and Hamburg, and 80 km (50 mi) from the Polish border. The town belongs to Western Pomerania and flanks the Baltic Sea, and is crossed by a small river, the Ryck. It is also located near Germany's two largest islands, Rügen and Usedom, and it is close to three of Germany's 14 national parks. It has been the capital of the newly established district of Vorpommern-Greifswald since the September 2011 district reforms. Together with Stralsund, Greifswald forms one of four urban centers of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The city's population was listed at 55,659 in 2013, including many of the 12,500 students and 5,000 employees of the University of Greifswald. Greifswald draws international attention due to the university, its surrounding BioCon Valley, the Nord Stream gas pipeline and the Wendelstein 7-X nuclear fusion projects.

The Greifswald University Medical Center is a public corporation under public law , which was formed in 2010 from the Medical Faculty of the University of Greifswald and the University Hospital Greifswald. It is a partial body of the University of Greifswald. The Faculty of Medicine has existed since the founding of the university in 1456. In the 2010s, about 1,100 students are being trained there. The University Hospital is a hospital in Greifswald and University Hospital of the University of Greifswald. The origins of the hospital can be traced back to the construction of an ambulatory clinic in Greifswald's city center in 1794. Today, with its 870 beds and 4,400 employees, it supplies approximately 146,000 patients annually, of whom around 36,000 are inpatients. In addition to the faculty and hospital, the Greifswald University Medical Center has other health and educational facilities, including an outpatient nursing service, an ambulance service for Greifswald and the surrounding area, nursing and other health professional.

Klosterruine Eldena und die Wiecker Holzklappbrücke bei Greifswald
Das Kloster Eldena oder Kloster Hilda (lat. Abbatia Hilda) ist eine ehemalige Zisterzienserabtei im Greifswalder Ortsteil Eldena. Das Kloster ist nur als Ruine erhalten, die durch den Maler Caspar David Friedrich überregionale Bekanntheit erlangte.
Die Wiecker Holzklappbrücke wurde im Jahre 1887 nach holländischem Vorbild erbaut. Die Klappbrücke führt über den Fluss Ryck, der wenige hundert Meter weiter östlich in die Dänische Wiek, den südlichen Teil des Greifswalder Boddens, mündet. Sie verbindet die beiden Ortsteile Wieck und Eldena der Universitäts- und Hansestadt Greifswald.
Die Ryckmündung ist seit der Gründung des Zisterzienserklosters Eldena im Jahre 1199 besiedelt, aber erst zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden konkrete Pläne für den Bau einer Brücke umgesetzt. Bis dahin war fast sieben Jahrhunderte lang ein Übersetzen nur mit Booten oder Fähren möglich. Auch heute noch befindet sich die nächste Brücke erst am Ende des schiffbaren Abschnittes des Rycks in Höhe der ca. fünf Kilometer entfernten Greifswalder Altstadt.
Der Greifswalder Holzschiffbaumeister und Reeder August Spruth erhielt am 20. Dezember 1886 den Auftrag eine von ihm entworfene Klappbrücke zu errichten. Im Februar 1887 begannen die Zimmerleute seiner Werft mit dem Bau und bereits am 25. Juli 1887 konnte die Wiecker Brücke feierlich eingeweiht werden. Die Brücke ist 55,1 m lang, 7,5 m breit und hat eine Schiffsdurchfahrtsbreite von 10,7 m. Ihre Baukosten beliefen sich auf 33.850 RM Zuletzt wurde die Brücke 1993 und 1994 in 8-monatiger Bauzeit für 1,6 Millionen DM generalinstandgesetzt. Sie bedarf aber trotzdem einer ständigen aufwändigen Wartung, um Zwischenfälle wie den vom 9. August 2004 zu vermeiden. An diesem Tag riss ein Bolzen und eine der schweren Zugketten fiel herunter.
Als eine der ältesten und noch immer funktionsfähigen Holzklappbrücken ist die Wiecker Brücke heute ein beeindruckendes technisches Denkmal und gilt als Wahrzeichen von Greifswald-Wieck. Fotografen und Malern dient sie immer wieder als Motiv.
