London History Walking Tour - Royal Greenwich

One of my favourite day trips in London is to Royal Greenwich - where east meets west and Old historical Royalty meets new modern art and innovation. Greenwich has been at the centre of the world for hundreds of years and you won't want to miss all these lovely places to see.

First there’s the peninsula where you can see modern art by Anthony Gormley, Alex Chinnek and more, stretching all along The Line as far as the Olympic park.

Take a trip up the River Thames to the place where Admiral Lord Nelson’s body was taken after the Battle of Trafalgar, Les Miserables was filmed and the first observatory in England was built by Sir Christopher Wren.

Climb the O2 centre for spectacular views of London or see a global sporting event or music concert inside the dome.

Take an Emirates cable car for wonderful views of the river or visit the Now Gallery for new and innovative art installations. You can even hit a few balls on the driving range or walk by the tree where Queen Elizabeth the first played as a child and King Henry VIII got married.

A tour of GREENWICH, London - The most underrated spot in the city?

Welcome to Greenwich! Or shall I say Royal Greenwich, as there are lots of royal connections in this area, especially Tudor. Not only was Henry VIII born in Greenwich, but his two daughters Mary I (or Bloody Mary) and Elizabeth I were born there too.

We start off the vlog at the Queen's House, where we learn about why this building is significant, as well as the Palace of Placentia which also once stood in this area.

Greenwich is also the site of the Old Royal Naval College, which was formerly known as the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich and later the Royal Naval College. Arguably one of the best views in London features this building with Canary Wharf behind it, and we go to the Royal Observatory to take in this magnificent view in its full glory.

At the Royal Observatory we encounter the splitting of the hemispheres into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres! Yes, time is an important concept in this part of the world - the Prime Meridian passes through Greenwich, which is where Greenwich Mean Time come from (the precursor of what is today known as Coordinated Universal Time or UTC).

After visiting the Royal Observatory, we walk through Greenwich Park toward the Cutty Sark, a famous tea clipper that was involved in the so-called tea races with China. We learn why the Suez Canal which opened in 1869 and further developments in shipbuilding dealt a blow to the tea clippers and why the Cutty Sark eventually became involved in the wool trade from Australia.

Finally, no visit to Greenwich is ever complete without visiting its famous markets. We first visit the indoor market with its huge variety of shops and stalls, featuring food, drinks, clothes, bags, photographs, books, neon-lit trinkets and the list goes on! We also make a quick stop to the Vintage Market and St. Alfege Church.

A Look At The Cutty Sark, Greenwich, Greater London

Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship. Built on the River Leven, Dumbarton, Scotland in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, she was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest, coming at the end of a long period of design development for this type of vessel, which halted as steamships took over their routes.

After the big improvement in the fuel efficiency of steamships in 1866, the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 gave them a shorter route to China, so Cutty Sark spent only a few years on the tea trade before turning to the trade in wool from Australia, where she held the record time to Britain for ten years. Continuing improvements in steam technology meant that gradually steamships also came to dominate the longer sailing route to Australia, and the ship was sold to the Portuguese company Ferreira and Co. in 1895 and renamed Ferreira. She continued as a cargo ship until purchased in 1922 by retired sea captain Wilfred Dowman, who used her as a training ship operating from Falmouth, Cornwall. After his death, Cutty Sark was transferred to the Thames Nautical Training College, Greenhithe in 1938 where she became an auxiliary cadet training ship alongside HMS Worcester. By 1954, she had ceased to be useful as a cadet ship and was transferred to permanent dry dock at Greenwich, London, for public display.

Cutty Sark is listed by National Historic Ships as part of the National Historic Fleet (the nautical equivalent of a Grade 1 Listed Building). She is one of only three remaining original composite construction (wooden hull on an iron frame) clipper ships from the nineteenth century in part or whole, the others being the City of Adelaide, which arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on 3 February 2014 for preservation, and the beached skeleton of Ambassador of 1869 near Punta Arenas, Chile.

The ship has been damaged by fire twice in recent years, first on 21 May 2007 while undergoing conservation. She was restored and was reopened to the public on 25 April 2012. And nn 19 October 2014 she was damaged in a smaller fire.

Cutty Sark whisky derives its name from the ship. An image of the clipper appears on the label, and the maker formerly sponsored the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race. The ship also inspired the name of the Saunders Roe Cutty Sark flying boat.

LONDON'S stunning NATIONAL MARITIME ????️ MUSEUM in Greenwich, what to see!

Top things to see at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich (NMM), London. Let's visit the National Maritime Museum (NMM) in Greenwich, London. The National Maritime Museum (NMM) in Greenwich is the leading maritime museum of the United Kingdom and may be the largest museum of its kind in the world. The historic buildings of the National Maritime Museum (NMM) form part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, and it also incorporates the Royal Observatory and 17th-century Queen's House. In 2012, Her Majesty the Queen formally approved Royal Museums Greenwich as the new overall title for the National Maritime Museum, Queen’s House, the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and the Cutty Sark.
The National Maritime Museum (NMM) is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Like other publicly funded national museums in the United Kingdom, the National Maritime Museum does not levy an admission charge, although most temporary exhibitions do incur admission charges.
