Germany Road Trip: Magical Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Dinkelsbühl

Welcome back to our Germany Road Trip travel vlog series through Bavaria, Germany, our 29th country on our round the world trip! Our road trip brought us to the magical town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Rothenburg is known as the Fairytale Town of Germany and has the Instagram posts to prove it!

After waking up before dawn to soak up the town before the crowds, we explore the gorgeous little town including the medieval walls and Rothenburg Christmas Market stalls. We captured a special moment in front of Plönlein and watched a stunning rainbow arching over Rothenburg in the early hours of the morning. It truly felt like we were living a fairytale!

Next, we drove over to Dinkelsbuhl for an evening at the most local-feeling market we’ve seen yet! If you love half-timbered German buildings, then this town has plenty for you to see!

Heads up, this is our 3rd travel vlog of a multi-part Germany Road Trip series as we drive from Nuremberg to Bamberg and then drive down the Romantic Road from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to the southern tip of Bavaria, ending in Munich! If you missed the first two vlogs, you can find those below.

Nuremberg Germany Vlog:

Bamberg Germany Vlog:

During our road trip across Bavaria, Germany, we’re logging hundreds of miles and taking you along for the ride. Enjoy our Germany vlogs and we’ll see you in our next one as we KEEP GOING PLACES!

Places to see in ( Ingolstadt - Germany )

Ingolstadt is a city in Bavaria, Germany, known for the Audi Forum and its museum of classic cars. Kreuztor, a 14th-century gate and the city emblem, is the entrance to the medieval old town. The 1723 Anatomical Institute has a botanical garden with medicinal plants. Asam Church Maria de Victoria is known for its baroque ceiling. The New Castle is home to the Bavarian Army Museum’s military history displays.

A youthful university city on the Danube in the heart of Bavaria, Ingolstadt is the headquarters of the car manufacturer Audi. You can return to the very origins of the brand at the Museum Mobile, and follow all stages of the high-tech production process on a factory tour.

South of the factory is an old town of gabled merchants’ houses, neatly preserved and encircled by a Neoclassical system of fortifications from the 19th century. Now the old redoubt, tower and cavalier are museums, while the city they protected has haunting Gothic and Medieval churches and civic buildings that go all the way back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

One of Germany’s leading carmakers of Audi Forum has an big visitor complex next to its factory to the north of Ingolstadt. In a stylish steel and glass building completed in 2000 is a museum documenting the history of the brand, and the companies like Wanderer, DKW and Horch that would eventually merge with Audi.Register in advance and you’ll be treated to a privileged look at the work that goes into each Audi.

The celebrated Late Baroque architects the Asam brothers designed this beautiful church in the 1730s. One of the things that strikes you about the Church of Our Lady is that its two western towers have two different heights. The park is named after Leo von Klenze, who designed the defences, including Reduit Tilly (redoubt) and Turm Triva (tower), which now host a branch of the Bavarian Army Museum and the Police Museum respectively.

Bavaria’s army museum is almost 140 years old, making it Germany’s oldest military museum, and moved to Ingolstadt from Munich in 1972. The main collection is in the Neues Schloss on the left bank on the Danube, while the First World War exhibition is in Reduit Tilly in the Klenzepark. Dating to 1385, Kreuztor is one of two of Ingolstadt’s four city gates still standing from the second Medieval ring of fortifications.

A department of the army museum, the police exhibition is in the Klenzepark’s Triva Tower and assembled objects going back to the Bavarian Revolution of 1918-19. Some of the engaging themes covered by the museum include the stormy days following the First World War, border security during the Cold War and the famed protests that took place in the 1980s against the construction of a nuclear reprocessing plant in Wackersdorf.

Ingolstadt’s old town hall is a compound of four different houses going back to the 1300s. Ingolstadt’s municipal museum is in Kavalier Hepp, a cavalier from the city’s Neoclassical fort, raised at the start of the 1840s. Behind the Altes Rathaus is the oldest building in Ingolstadt, going back to 1234. The Moritzirche also has traces of an even older building from the 800s when the city was founded.

The only specialised museum of its kind in the country is in the 18th-century anatomical theatre building established to train medical students at the University of Ingolstadt. The oldest secular building in Ingolstadt is the whitewashed Gothic castle built in 1255 for Louis II, Duke of Bavaria.

( Ingolstadt - Germany ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Ingolstadt . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Ingolstadt - Germany

Bavaria Vacation Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations

Bavaria is the largest German territory. Its typical atmosphere is given by little towns and villages. Wooden shells, high red tiled roofs with many little skylights, old signboards, town walls, ancient churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, huge green areas and many flowers take us to a wonderfully calm and merry world. Beside the well known Octoberfest holder Munich and the medieval older town look keeper Nuremberg, Regensburg and Augsburg there are castles like the romantic Neuschwanstein that are waiting for the traveller. There are glittering lakes in the green pinewood like the Königssee and the Chiemsee, and mountaintops like the snow-capped Zugspitze. Though Bavaria is only one territory within the German territories everyone can feel it is quite different from the others. It is richer, friendlier and its atmosphere is more delightful than the country’s other territories.

Places to see in ( Erfurt - Germany ) Zitadelle Petersberg

Places to see in ( Erfurt - Germany ) Zitadelle Petersberg

Petersberg Citadel (German:Zitadelle Petersberg) in Erfurt, central Germany, is one of the largest and best preserved town fortresses in Europe. The citadel was built on Petersberg hill, in the north-western part of the old town centre from 1665, when Erfurt was governed by the Electorate of Mainz. It is surrounded by over two kilometres of stone walls and is 36 hectares in size.

Erfurt has also been ruled by Sweden, Prussia, Napoleon, the German Empire, the Nazis, and post-World War II Soviet occupying forces, and it was part of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). All of these regimes used Petersberg Citadel and had an influence on its development. The baroque fortress was in military use until 1963. Since German reunification in 1990, the citadel has undergone significant restoration and it is now open to the public as an historic site. Its maze of underground passageways are also open to visitors and the fortress bakery (1832) is again in working order.

The fortress is also known by its French name, Citadelle Petersberg, as French troops were stationed there from 1806 to 1814, when Erfurt was under Napoleonic occupation. Napoleon visited Erfurt several times and the citadel was further developed during his rule, although parts of it were damaged in a battle in 1813. The citadel was built on the site of a medieval Benedictine Monastery and the earliest parts of the complex date from the 12th century.

The former lower barracks (German:Untere Kaserne) building is now used to house and administer archives of the Stasi, the Ministry for State Security of the former German Democratic Republic. The Cyriaksburg Citadel (de), is a smaller fortress to the south-west of Erfurt city centre, which dates from 1480. It is now the home of the German Horticulture Museum. During the Napoleonic period a hidden trench connecting the two citadels was built. The remains of this connection can still be seen at the Cyriaksburg Citadel today.
