I was sent this video by the helpful folks at the Museum of the History of the Polish Jews ( in Warsaw. The narration is in Polish, here's an English summary (courtesy of Leah Rapoport of Sweden, via Adina Mishkoff Kischel of Maale Adumim, Israel):
Grajewo -- a little shtetl on the border of Prussia. Jews lived there already at the beginning of the 18th century. They were merchants, and they traded with the communities around Prussia. In 1921, the Jews were 39% of the population. In November 1942, there was a mass deportation to Treblinka. There was a big synagogue, the biggest building in the whole town. After the war, they turned the synagogue into a cultural center.

Polonia, un país de 38 millones de habitantes y 312.700 km² ubicado en la porción oriental de la Europa Central.
En estas primeras horas en Varsovia, que significan nuestra cuarta visita al país, nos hemos encontrado con una ciudad revitalizada después de la pandemia.
Limita al norte con el mar Báltico y el óblast ruso de Kaliningrado, al noreste con Lituania, al este con Bielorrusia, al sureste con Ucrania, al sur con la República Checa y Eslovaquia y al oeste con Alemania.
Es una república parlamentaria, católica y cuyo idioma es el polaco, una lengua eslava occidental y forma parte de la Unión Europea.
Su capital y ciudad más poblada es Varsovia, dónde acabamos de llegar y vamos a tener nuestras primeras impresiones. La ciudad, de 1.777.000 habitantes, está situada en el centro-este del país.
Nos han contado en estás primeras horas que los polacos son de naturaleza pesimista, siempre parecen estar tristes y preocupados. Nos dijeron que se quejan por todo, que sí hace frío, que hace calor, que sí llueve o que no llueve, del tiempo, de la política y de las enfermedades. Pero eso es algo que aún tenemos que comprobar.
Las estadísticas acompañan está hipótesis. Al pedírseles que calificaran su satisfacción general ante la vida en una escala de 0 a 10, los polacos otorgaron una calificación promedio de 6.1 cifra menor que el 6.7 promedio de países desarrollados.
Lo cierto es que no vemos mucha gente alegre, o sonriendo, todos parecen ir en absoluta seriedad.
Polonia nos está resultando un país económico. Entró en la Unión Europea el Primero de mayo de 2004, sin embargo, no ha completado la Unión Monetaria; la moneda circulante sigue siendo el złoty y no se ha dado una fecha oficial para la introducción del euro.
Algunos célebres polacos se nos vienen a la mente inmediatamente al pisar este territorio.
Frederic Chopin, compositor exponente del romanticismo, nació en los alrededores de Varsovia de madre polaca y padre francés.
Viajó a Viena y posteriormente a París para continuar sus estudios musicales. Pero nunca volvió a Polonia porque ésta se encontraba sumida en revueltas libertarias como consecuencia de la pérdida de la independencia del país.
Nicolás Copérnico. El siglo 16 fue una época de prosperidad económica y desarrollo cultural para Polonia. En aquella época, la humanidad creía que el Sol y los planetas orbitaban alrededor de la tierra.
Pero en 1543, el mismo año de su muerte, Copérnico publicó la teoría de que la Tierra y los otros planetas orbitan alrededor del Sol. Esta idea fue tomada como revolucionaria.
Mientras caminamos por las calles de Varsovia no podemos dejar de admirar la belleza femenina. Pero además de bellas las polacas han hecho historia. Maria Skłodowska-Curie, la primera mujer en recibir dos veces el Premio Nobel, de Física y de Química, nació aquí.
Madame Curie viajó a París para continuar sus estudios y al igual que Chopin, nunca olvidó su tierra y compartió el anhelo de los polacos por recuperar su independencia. Por eso denominó polonio al primer elemento que descubrió y por el que recibió asimismo su primer Premio Nobel.
Polonia es un país eminentemente católico y eso puede verse a simple vista en las innumerables iglesias coronada de cruces. El polaco Karol Wojtyła, arzobispo de Cracovia y Papa Juan Pablo II fue el primer pontífice eslavo en la historia de la Iglesia Católica y permaneció en el Vaticano hasta su muerte.
Parece que es un designio de los polacos tener que salir de su tierra. En nos sucesivos videos de esta serie intentaremos saber por qué.
El territorio polaco comprende en su porción más grande al norte parte de la gran llanura europea y abarca al sur territorio montañoso de los Sudetes, los Cárpatos y la Sierra de la Santa Cruz.
Iremos a la costa del mar Báltico y recorreremos algunas de las ciudades más bonitas.
La tarde se hizo honda y nos caímos dentro admirando la belleza que circula y se estanca a nuestro alrededor.

One day of 2023 Autumn, i decide travel to Bialystok by train from Suwalki. I spend time by exploring Bialystok City, visit Bialystok city center, City Park, ZOO (small, but very good and surprised, because admission fee-free), tasting food in Bialystok Milk Bar. My decision, Bialystok beautiful, clean city and budget friendly. One day for walking around, highly recommended.

Cracovia (en polaco, Kraków Acerca de este sonido [ˈkrakuf] (?·i)) es la capital del voivodato de Pequeña Polonia (Województwo małopolskie) y una de las ciudades más grandes, antiguas e importantes de Polonia. Situada en las márgenes del río Vístula, tiene una población de 766 000 habitantes (3 millones en su área metropolitana), lo que la convierte en la segunda ciudad más poblada de Polonia. Województwo podlaskie położone jest w północno-wschodniej części Polski. Swoją nazwę wzięła od regionu podlaskiego, który znajdował się na tym terenie. W okresie powojennym województwo nosiło nazwę Białystok, od nazwy centrum administracyjnego. Region położony jest na granicy z Białorusią i Litwą i jest najzimniejszą częścią kraju z wysokimi temperaturami latem i niskimi zimą.
Kapitał
Centrum administracyjnym jest miasto Białystok z niewielką liczbą 300 tys. mieszkańców. Położone jest nad rzeką Biała, od której odziedziczyło swoją nazwę: „Skok nad Białą”.
Natura
Województwo podlaskie słusznie słynie ze swojej przyrody: 32% terytorium jest objęte ochroną, a liczne parki odpowiadają za malownicze krajobrazy, których jest wiele. Do najbardziej znanych należy Białowieski Park Narodowy, który oprócz pięknych miejsc dziewiczej przyrody - szumiących czystych rzek, kwitnących łąk i niekończących się lasów dębowych, oferuje turystom poznanie różnorodnej flory i fauny, która świetnie czuje się w ich ojczyźnie.
Główne miasta: Białystok, Augustów, Łomża, Grajewo
Białystok – stolica – nazywany jest „zielonymi płucami Polski”, ponieważ około jednej trzeciej powierzchni zajmują skwery, a lasy zajmują ponad 1500 hektarów. Architektura miasta jest zróżnicowana: ponad 200 budynków uważa się za zabytki.
Augustów wziął swoją nazwę od znajdującego się na jego terenie Kanału Augustowskiego. Miasto otacza 9 jezior i Puszcza Augustowska. Miasto znane jest jako wodna stolica Polski. Jest szczególnie ceniony wśród miłośników aktywności na świeżym powietrzu, głównie wody.
Łomża to małe stare miasto położone nad rzeką Narew. Łomża jest najbardziej odpowiednia dla miłośników historii i wycieczek krajoznawczych, ponieważ miasto jest przesiąknięte historią na wskroś.
Grajewo to bardzo małe miasteczko, które jest ważnym ogniwem w komunikacji kolejowej między Polską a Białorusią: znajduje się tu kolej Bresto-Grajewo, a przez tutejsze służby celne przechodzi ważny transport towarów.
Co oglądać?
Kanał Augustowski ciągnie się na długości 102 km przez Polskę i Białoruś. Łączy Niemen i Wisłę w jedną arterię. Oprócz strategicznego znaczenia dla ruchu statków między Europą Wschodnią i Środkową, kanał wyróżnia się malowniczymi widokami, chronionymi przez UNESCO. Po zakończeniu I wojny światowej kanał zyskał dużą popularność turystyczną: od tego czasu na jego barwnych krainach, które można oglądać do dziś, odbywają się morskie wakacje.
W prowincjonalnym miasteczku Suwałki można uciec od zgiełku. Teraz miasto organizuje wycieczki z przewodnikiem odpowiednie dla miłośników historii, a dla dzieci są ekscytujące spacery mitologiczne, na przykład „Gnomy istnieją”.
Warto wybrać się nad jezioro Wigry z otaczającym je Vigierskim Parkiem Narodowym. To największy zbiornik wodny w regionie. Woda w jeziorze jest stale aktualizowana ze względu na specyfikę lokalizacji, więc jego fauna jest wspaniała. Mieszkańców można podziwiać spacerując wzdłuż jeziora na statku z przezroczystym dnem.
Wdzięki kobiece
Rezydencja hetmana koronnego Klementy Branickiego znajduje się w Białymstoku i znana jest jako „Pałac Branickich”. Luksus dekoracji i wykwintne dekoracje przyciągają turystów. Na jego terenie można znaleźć szklarnię, arsenał, pawilon gościnny i inne budynki.
Wśród budowli sakralnych jedną z najatrakcyjniejszych z punktu widzenia historii można nazwać katedrą św. Mikołaja. Budynek urządzony jest w stylu klasycystycznym, typowym dla budownictwa cerkiewnego XIX wieku.
W Białymstoku znajduje się ratusz, w którym obecnie mieści się Muzeum Podlaskie. Budynek pochodzi z XVIII wieku, a na jego terenie odbywają się wystawy sztuki i archeologii.
Skansen w Jurowcach – Podlaskie Muzeum Kultury Ludowej. Drewniana architektura z XIX wieku opowiada historię Białegostoku, Suwałki i Łomży.
Alfons Karny to wybitny rzeźbiarz urodzony w Białymstoku. Ze sztuką bezpośrednio związaną z historią województwa i całej Polski można zapoznać się w Muzeum Rzeźby Alfona Karny, mieszczącym się w Białymstoku. Odbywają się tam również wystawy poświęcone sztuce współczesnej oraz lekcje dla młodzieży.

Warsaw's Best Kept Secrets
Warsaw, the most devastated city after the last war (it was leveled to the ground before the Nazis left), survived centuries of pillage, destruction, and annihilation throughout its long years of existence. Yet many of the city structures, all rebuilt only more than fifty years ago and fully restored to its original design, proudly mirror the people's resiliency.
From the Royal Road to Novy Swiat, many architectural masterpieces (wonders of postwar reconstruction), making this city extraordinary and memorable, have captured my camera's fascination, from the Wilanow Castle, the Staszic Palace (our archives conference venue) to the Royal Castle, down to the old town square on the bank of the mighty Vistula River, and the Barbican. UNESCO appreciated Warsaw monuments and its relics, and honored the City by putting the Historic Center of Warsaw on the World Heritage List. On the modern side, nothing can compare with the awesome Warsaw University Library, all glass, steel and chrome, with a garden on the glass roof and a beautiful view on the river, and four million holdings.
As a country, Poland, the biggest country in Europe, turned out to be quite a revelation. I never expected to fall in love with the country and its friendly people so quickly. From the moment I took a taxi from the airport, whose driver charged me only 36 zloty (9 euros, which, believe me, is cheap when compared to my taxi fares in Amsterdam and in Paris), I was already enamored with Warsaw: the wide avenues lined with century-old trees, the clean metro stations, the friendly passersby who patiently looked into my city guide-maps and gave directions despite the language barrier, and the accommodating bus driver who waived our first bus fare because we only had euro coins.
Poland has a long history of cruel occupations from three neighbors, Austria, Germany, and Russia, after suffering from three partitions, which has reduced its size to a third of what it used to be in ancient maps. So it is no surprise to me to find the people's characteristic traits of fortitude, strength, resoluteness, fierce pride and nationalistic spirit so pervasive.
