7 major rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Una in the northwest part of Bosnia flows along the northern and western border of Bosnia and Croatia and through the Bosnian city of Bihać. It is a very beautiful river and popular for rafting and adventure sports.
The Sana flows through the city of Sanski Most and Prijedor and is a tributary of the river Una in the north.
The Vrbas flows through the cities of Gornji Vakuf – Uskoplje, Bugojno, Jajce, Banja Luka, Srbac and reaches the river Sava in the north. The Vrbas flows through the central part of Bosnia and flows outwards to the North.
The River Bosna is the longest river in Bosnia and is fully contained within the country as it stretches from its source near Sarajevo to the river Sava in the north. It gave its name to the country.
The Drina flows through the eastern part of Bosnia, at many places in the border between Bosnia and Serbia. The Drina flows through the cities of Foča, Goražde Višegrad and Zvornik.
The Neretva river is a large river in Central and Southern Bosnia, flowing from Jablanica south to the Adriatic Sea. The river is famous as it flows through the famous city of Mostar.
The Sava river is the largest river in Bosnia and Herzegovina but not the largest river that is flowing through Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Sava river flows through Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. DRIVING through BANJA LUKA CITY - Bosnia and Herzegovina - Exploring the map
Zagreb to Sarajevo; Bosnian Road Trip - Highlights
Its not particularly easy to get to Sarajevo, There are no trains, very few buses and flights can be expensive and only take you to the main cities. I managed to find a 6am bus to take me from Zagreb to Sarajevo through some of the best landscapes Bosnia & Herzegovina has to offer.
The total route was 447km (285miles) and took around 10hours. It is still to this day one of my favourite bus trips because of the amazing landscapes. At the beginning you will see the towering mountains of the northern region as our bus winds along the narrow road, through tunnels and crossing the river below. Later you will see the hilly agricultural landscapes of the southern regions with some of the traditional Bosnian houses.
We also stopped at a restaurant in the mountains where I met that adorable cat! Eventually we made it to Sarajevo where I had to walk through the rain to find my hostel. In the next videos I will show you the highlights of Sarajevo.

Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the largest city of Republika Srpska. Banja Luka is also the de facto capital of this entity. It is the traditional centre of the densely-forested Bosanska Krajina region of northwestern Bosnia.
The city is home to the University of Banja Luka and University Clinical Center of the Republika Srpska, as well as numerous entity and state institutions for Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina respectively. The city lies on the Vrbas river and is well known in the countries of the former Yugoslavia for being full of tree-lined avenues, boulevards, gardens, and parks. Banja Luka was designated European city of sport in 2018.

In this video you can ride along on Autocesta A10 and A1 E73 from Mali Prolog in Croatia to Kravica in Bosnia Herzegovina. After a short stretch of highway in Bosnia Herzegovina, we continue on a few local roads to reach the final destination.
At Mali Prolog, Croatia's longest motorway, the A1, currently comes to an end. At the junction there is a split to the A10 which carries traffic to the border with Bosnia Herzegovina and the D8 expressway which carries traffic towards Ploče and Dubrovnik. The A10 is the shortest highway of the country.
Following the E73 across the border, the A1 takes over on the Bosnia Herzegovina side. This too, is a short highway section for now. They are currently building the extension towards the city of Mostar and I believe there are also construction works on the A1 somewhere between Mostar and Sarajevo. Most of A1 is completed around Sarajevo and there are also a few completed highways in the North of the country.
As you can see, it's costly to build a highway in this area and traffic numbers will not be through the roof. For now the A1 is open until exit Čapljina where the toll station still needs to be finished. Toll is now paid upfront at the border for the time being.
