ORTHODOX MONASTERIES near GORNJI MILANOVAC, SERBIA (VOLJAVČA, KAMENAC, VRAĆEVŠNICA, SAVINAC, VUJAN)
MONASTERY VOLJAVCA is located in Tavnik village, 15 km from Kraljevo. Monastery’s name originates from the village with the same name. Complex is consisted of two churches, an old one, log cabin church, and new church.
The old church was built during Princ Milos’s reign, by the patriarch Arsenije III Carnojevic (1690), on the foundations of the earlier temples, which has been demolished by the Turks, when they arrived in this parts. All what was left behind them was a stone cup from which healing water flowed. The same stone cup still exists in today’s church, it has been dried up when some of the villagers began to feed the cattle from the source. The church is dedicated to St. Prokopije.
If you visit the monastery, you will receive, as a gift, the bottle of holy water is consisted of mixture of doezens different holy waters brought by nuns from different holy places.
New church, dedicated to St. Petka, dates from 1967, and it was built because of the need of people for bigger church.
MONASTERY KAMENAC is located a few kilometers from Gruza, near the village Cestina. The foundation of the monastery is related to the despot Stefan Lazarevic from the late 14th and early 15th century. The monastery was destroyed by the arrival of the Turks in these parts in the mid-15th century. It was rebuilt in 1700 and again in 1870. At the beginning of the 20th century, King Peter I Karadjordjevic financed building of the entrance to the church.
On one of church stones, on the part of the wall from the exterior fasade, there is an imprint of St. Sava’s foot. In the courtyard is a monument to the warriors who fell in the wars from 1912 to 1918. Left and right from the front door are two doves carved into stone cubes. From the back part of the church was one of the oldest schools in Serbia, built in 1818.
All monastery products in the shop are made according to the old recepies found in the monastery and according to the recipies given to the monastery by believers. There are herbal teas, honey and honey-based products, tinctures, home-made soaps, balms, plum brandy, blackberry wine, religious books, etc. All herbal products or food are plant-based, without artificial substances.
MONASTERY VRACEVSNICA is located next to the village with same name, in the municipality of Gornji Milanovac. It was built in the 15th century. Building of the monastery was the expression of thankfulness to God because all inhabitants of mentioned village returned to their homes, alive and well, from the Kosovo battle.
Vracevsnica monastery has long been an important political and cultural center of the whole region, with first schools in this area. Vozd Karadjordje often visited the monastery, and the mother of Prince Milos Obrenovic, popularly known as Grandma Visnja, was buried in the monastery’s cortyartd, near St. George's church. Prince Milos built a resting house in the monastery’s courtyard for his mother’s soul.
The rebels set off from this monastery in 1815, after the Holy Communion, across the mountain Takovo and raised the Second Serbian Revolution against Turkish government.
In the monastery treasury are kept importan objects: icons, pieces of furniture of the Obrenovic family, a portrait of Princ Milos, the work of the famous painter Djura Jaksic.
In the monastery shop you can buy many products made by nuns, and far away is famous their honey.
ST. SAVA CHURCH - SAVINAC was built in 1819, with support of Princ Milos Obrenovic. It was built not far from where it is believed that it was formerly a medieval Savinac monastery, dating back to the Nemanjic's reign. Namely, after the liturgy, St. Sava went down to the spring on Dicina and sanctificated it, so this spring is called St. Sava’s spring, and the place around the spring was called Savinac.
In the crypt of the church there are the relics of Mina Karadzic Vukomanovic, Vuk Karadzic’s daughter, her husband Aleksa Vukomanovic's, a cousin of Princess Ljubica, and their child Janko's relics. There are kept the relics of Pricess Ljubica’s parents, and the relics of Obren Martinovic, the first husband of Princ Milos’s mother, by whom Obrenovic’s got their surname.
MONASTERY VUJAN dates from the 13th century. It is located in the area of Prislonica village. It is male monastery. The church in the monastery complex, dedicated to Archangel Michael, was built in 1805, by Nikola Milicevic Lunjevica, grandfather of Queen Draga, the last queen during the reign of Obrenovic.
The monastery was a learning center when there were no schools. The current frescoes are of no greater artistic value and date back to 1939 and 1943. Only a pillar of honorable dining table remained as a memorial to Nemanjic’s times.
The monastery preserves St. Vujan’s relics. As well, the remains of Queen Draga, Nikodia and Nikola Lunjevica are kept there, all killed during the May coup in 1903.
The most beloved Serbian patriarch Pavle has became here.

Serbia Road Trip: Exploring the Heart of the Balkans
In March I took an 8-day road trip through Central and Southern Serbia.

Even 8 days wasn't enough to thoroughly explore all of the best regions, cities and natural beauty in Central in Southern Serbia.
Poor weather like heavy rain, landslides and flash floods also made it more difficult to get around but overall the road and driving conditions in Serbia were excellent.
I definitely want to explore Serbia by car again and I think a minimum of 1-month would be needed. I also would recommend travelling during the summer or fall because in the winter and spring many of the attractions are closed and the weather isn't as ideal.

Jahorina mountain - 10 things to do
Jahorina (Serbian Cyrillic: Јахорина) is a mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located on the tripoint of the municipalities of Pale - Republika Srpska and Trnovo - Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Part of the Dinaric Alps, it borders Mount Trebević and its highest peak Ogorjelica, has a summit elevation of 1,916 metres, making it the second-highest of Sarajevo's mountains, after Bjelašnica at 2,067m.
The Jahorina ski resort located on the mountain, hosted the women's alpine skiing events of the 1984 Winter Olympics.

Свет Таре је још у 19. веку истраживао велики српски ботаничар Јосиф Панчић и открио дрво из леденог доба! Њему у част оно је названо Панчићева оморика.

Предов Крст у кањону речице Дервенте је само срце Националног парка - идеално место за одмор ван домашаја цивилизације. У оквиру Националног парка постоје два већа туристичка центра с изграђеним одмаралиштима и хотелима -Митровац и Калуђерске баре.

Један од симбола Бајине Баште је усамљена брвнара подигнута на речној стени. „Кућа на Дрини“ већ скоро пола века одолева брзацима и бујицама, а слика тогнеобичног уточишта чамџија и пливача обишла је свет.

Србија, Црна Гора, Босна и Херцеговина и Хрватска номиновале су своје средњовековне некрополе стећака за листу светске културне баштине. Реч је о јединственом културном феномену Балкана.Стећци на Перућцу и Растишту код Бајине Баште представљају део овог вредног наслеђа.

OVAKO ZAMIŠLjAM RAJ
Nepregledne šume, veličanstveni pogled s vidikovaca, kanjon Drine, jezera... prizori su lepota Nacionalnog parka koji su naveli direktora Evropske fondacije za zaštitu prirode da Taru opiše kao zemaljski raj. Svet Tare je još u 19. veku istraživao veliki srpski botaničar Josif Pančić i otkrio drvo iz ledenog doba! Njemu u čast ono je nazvano Pančićeva omorika.

Jedan od simbola Bajine Bašte je usamljena brvnara podignuta na rečnoj steni. „Kuća na Drini“ već skoro pola veka odoleva brzacima i bujicama, a slika togneobičnog utočišta čamdžija i plivača obišla je svet.

Srbija, Crna Gora, Bosna i Hercegovina i Hrvatska nominovale su svoje srednjovekovne nekropole stećaka za listu svetske kulturne baštine. Reč je o jedinstvenom kulturnom fenomenu Balkana.Stećci na Perućcu i Rastištu kod Bajine Bašte predstavljaju deo ovog vrednog nasleđa.

ROMANIA TO SERBIA BORDER CROSSING BY TRAIN | Timisoara To Belgrade
We didn't think it would be so difficult to cross the border of countries that border each other!
For some reason, the Serbian and Romanian railway management stopped the direct train between the two countries leaving travelers with minimal options. Determined to do the crossing overland for the cheapest possible price, we elected to still try and make the train journey. As you'll see, the journey wasn't very straightforward and certainly didn't end up being very cheap!
We are just happy that we got to cross the Romania - Serbia border by train at all!
Hopefully, this is helpful for anyone wanting to make the same journey!

The name Gostilje was first mentioned as a rural settlement in 1476 in the Turkish cadastral censuses of some areas of western Serbia. Gostilje lies on the slopes of the mountain, 30 km from the center of Zlatibor. It is located in the southwestern part of Serbia and spreads on the eastern slopes of Zlatibor, around the middle course of the river Katusnica engaged in animal husbandry and fruit growing. The environment provides ideal conditions for collecting medicinal herbs, fishing and sports tourism.
