Gjirokaster is located on a hillside in the south of Albania, overlooking a stunning river valley. It’s known for its ancient history, Ottoman-style architecture and imposing castle, which is one of the biggest in the Balkans. From the first moment you set foot in its cobbled streets, you’ll be enchanted with this place. And while many people choose to visit Gjirokaster as a quick day trip, we highly recommend staying at least a few days here if you can. This UNESCO World Heritage town has a diverse mix of things to do.

7. Stroll around the Old Bazaar
The Old Bazaar is the most picturesque area in Gjirokaster and strolling around it is an experience in itself. There are many souvenir shops, traditional cafés, restaurants, and some beautiful Ottoman-era houses. You’ll quickly understand why Gjirokaster is considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Albania. So bring your camera and spend time taking in the atmosphere.
6. Visit the Castle
Dominating the town, the castle is the most-visited tourist attraction in Gjirokaster for a good reason. While it’s still unclear when this fortification was exactly built, there’s no doubt that it witnessed the turbulent history of the region across centuries. Inside the castle you can see the Clock Tower, an Aritallary Gallery, and a US Air Force plane that made an emergency landing in Albania during the Cold War. The Castle’s Museum is also a must-do when inside.
5. Take a look inside Zekate house
After visiting the castle, you should head to Zekate House, a traditional Ottoman-era house that dates back to the early 1800s. It’s a typical tower house, belonging to the wealthy families of 19th century Gjirokaster. Zekate is a 3-storey house and has gorgeous interiors and rooms, which can all be accessed.

4. Try the local specialties
Gjirokaster has its own produce and unique culinary traditions. The town’s signature dish includes baked rice balls, and you can find it in almost every restaurant in the city. Restaurants we recommend are: Odaja, Taverna Kuka, and The Barrels.
3. Walk to the Ali Pasha bridge
Another great thing to do in Gjirokaster is to hike to Ali Pasha’s bridge, which is set in a narrow gorge right outside of town. It takes about 45 minutes of uphill walking to reach the aqueduct from the castle. But if you have a rental car, it might be easier to drive the first part, which is a mostly paved road.
2. Learn about the Cold War Tunnels
When traveling around Albania you’ll discover many bunkers that were built during the Cold War. Gjirokaster has its own version of a bunker, which sits underneath the castle. The Cold War Tunnel was a secret 800-meter long tunnel bunker that has been transformed into a small museum.

Given Gjirokaster’s hilly character, it’s no wonder that there are many beautiful viewpoints to enjoy. Our favorite one was from the Obelisk monument in the heart of the old town. From here, you can oversee the entire town, castle, and valley.

My eleventh day in the beautiful Balkan country of Albania began in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Gjirokastër. Come along with me as I try Albanian food and visit UNESCO attractions in Gjirokastër, Albania!

My day began at Hotel Argjiro in Gjirokastër. My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I started with a massive breakfast on the second-floor terrace. The pispili (a spinach and corn pie casserole was fluffy, like a quiche! I also had eggs and some phenomenal bacon and a doughy byrek with goat cheese inside. The sweet fig marmalade was perfect with the crispy, hollow petulla.
Next, we headed through the bazaar, uphill toward the castle. Along the way, we checked out a Cold War bunker and saw several vendors, including a woman selling fresh figs, blackberries, and mountain tea!
Then, we arrived at the castle. Inside is a map of the castle. There are Italian and German cannons from WWII along the corridor and an Italian Fiat L6/40 tank!
Further along is a garden terrace where you can see stunning views of Gjirokastër.
There’s also a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star U.S. Air Force plane.
Then, we headed to the clock tower. On the way is a big square and stage where a traditional festival is held. At the end of the castle is the 18th-century clock tower and a plaque telling the story of Princess Argjiro, who jumped from the top of the castle with her baby so they wouldn’t be captured by Ottoman invaders in the 15th century.
In the bazaar, we stopped at a handicraft shop where a man makes beautiful stone carvings with a hammer and chisel. I bought two: one of the eagle on the Albanian flag for my office and a square one for my assistant for 20 Euros/$23.45 USD.
Next, we visited a woodcarving shop, which is another specialty in Gjirokastër. I bought two name plates for my daughters. They’re beautiful gifts! I also bought the double Albanian eagle for 3,000 lekes total, or about $30 USD.
Further on is Edua, another shop, where they sell artisanal goods including mountain tea, oil, liquors, and more! I tried some strong rakija and bought some honey and artisanal soap for 1,000 lekes/roughly $10 USD.
Next, we visited a traditional building that was being renovated and then walked to Bar Restorant Hotel Kodra. In the kitchen, they prepared a Gjirokastër chicken tava dish with green peppers, tomatoes, goat cheese, herbs, cream, and onions.
On the terrace, Erjan and I toasted with some smoky rakija and then started on the tava! We also had a huge salad with parmesan cheese, mushrooms, cucumbers, spinach, balsamic vinegar, oil, and raisins. The salad was crunchy and fresh and perfect for a hot day!
The tava was super creamy and full of yummy herbs. It was my first chicken tava in Albania. The herbs brought out so much flavor! It was even better with some crunchy focaccia bread.
We ended with a creamy dessert called oshaf, which is made with sheep milk and fig juice. It’s super thick and creamy and reminded me of panna cotta. I loved the cinnamon in it!
Our final stop was an 18th century home to see how life used to be in Gjirokastër. It’s called Skenduli House. There’s a courtyard and a first level where the family would cook for themselves and their animal. The second level was their winter room and the top room was for the summer. It’s a beautiful, amazing house. What a stunning piece of history that’s still alive today!

The Most Beautiful City in Albania | Gjirokaster
Gjirokaster is a city located in the south of country. With its beautiful and unique stone houses, views of Drino valley and a stunning castle, it is the best place to see and experience the culture of Albania through the ages.
If you are heading to Gjirokaster from Ksamil or Sarande or heading there after Gjirokaster, do not forget to explore the beautiful Blue Eye or Syri i kalter on the way. The entire route is very beautiful and scenic.
Gjirokaster old city is a UNESCO World Heritage site with its stone houses which belonged to the old aristocratic families, its cobbled streets, small squares and its silver castle. The castle has this nickname because the stones turn grey which it rains.
Gjirokaster is also host to the birth house of Enver Hohxa, the communist dictator of Albania.
A great spot to see the entire city is the Gjirokaster Obelisk which provide great vies of the old city, new city as well as the fort. If you want a panorama of the entire valley head to the Korcula Resort located atop the stunning mountains on one side of the city.
Gjirokaster is also an exciting place for food exploration and offers a chance to get to know the traditional foods that belonged to this region.

After spending the night in Lekdush, we drove to Gjirokaster, the city of stone. With it's Ottoman style houses (complete with stone roofs), a castle, an old bazaar, museums, old heritage houses, and mountainous surroundings, it's no wonder Gjirokaster is a UNESCO world heritage site.
