Experiencing the Real KOSOVO | A Tour of GJAKOVA!!

Taking a tour of Gjakova in the south west of Kosovo, meeting some of the locals & visiting the Hadum Mosque & Old Bazaar.
???????? See all of my Road Trip in Kosovo here →

My tour of Gjakova started on the outskirts of the city where I found a historic Ottoman era stone bridge called the Tabak’s Bridge (Ura e Tabakeve) which spans the River Erenik. I then drove into the city and found a parking space close to the Old Bazaar. Sadly most of the shops were closed but I was able to admire the old wooden buildings and cobbled streets before the evening got dark.

During my walk about the city I discovered a Turkish religious building called a Tekke which was restored by Shaykh Ruzhdi Shehu in 2017. It was absorbing to see all the pretty buildings close to the river and the tall clock tower overlooking it all. By this time the shopping street had exploded into a busy and colourful dining and entertainment area where I got the impression people would be enjoying a drink or a meal into the early hours of the morning.

Perhaps my favourite part of the Vlog was exploring the Hadum Mosque (Xhamia Hadumit) whose staff invited me in and allowed me to film the beautiful frescoes inside, and learning about the art of sculpting at Zoe’s Art Studio close by. It was fascinating to talk to Zoe and meet her two adorable children.

After a quick pizza I headed back to my car and drove about an hour to Prizren. My walk around Gjakova had been a wonderful experience and I was looking forward to what other treasures might be waiting for me as I continue my road trip around Kosovo.

#Gjakova - ???????? #Kosovo [Drone Footage] 4K @MTravelVlog

Gjakova or Đakovica is the seventh most populous city of Kosovo[a] and the capital of the eponymous municipality and district. The city has 40,827 inhabitants, while the municipality has 94,556 inhabitants.

Geographically, it is located in the south-western part of Kosovo, about halfway between the cities of Peja and Prizren. It is approximately 100 km (62 mi) inland from the Adriatic Sea. The city is situated some 208 kilometres (129 mi) north-east of Tirana, 145 kilometres (90 mi) north-west of Skopje, 80 kilometres (50 mi) west of the capital Pristina, 435 kilometres (270 mi) south of Belgrade and 263 kilometres (163 mi) east of Podgorica.

The city of Gjakova has been populated since the prehistoric era. During the Ottoman period, Gjakova served as a trading centre on the route between Shkodra and Constantinople. It was also one of the most developed trade centres at that time in the Balkans.

KOSOVO | GJAKOVA

The following morning in Prizren, Kosovo, I found myself with a few hours free, before I would continue on with my journey back in (North) Macedonia. As I had read that the city of Gjakova was only an hour away, then I decided to hop on a bus there to pay a brief visit.

It is a city which has a population of c.40,827 residents (current as of 2022), & is known primarily for its bazaar (Čaršija e Madhe) area, the oldest established such bazaar in Kosovo, & one of the largest in the Balkan region. It was all but destroyed during the war of 1998-1999, but has since been rebuilt.

Back in October of 2020, I spent a little over a week on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip through Kosovo with my good friend Erjan Guxha. I spent two of those days in the national capital, Pristina. This city lies on a plain near the Goljak Mountains, and has a rich history that has roots dating back to the ancient Vinča culture.

The city, like most of Kosovo, has moved on from the dark days of the Kosovo War in the 1990s, and rebuilt itself stronger than ever. That said, Pristina still is often overlooked by travelers visiting the Balkans in favor of other cities in the region like Belgrade, Dubrovnik, Split, Skopje, and Sofia. But Pristina is more than worthy of a visit, and I’ll show you why in this video.

Whether you’re visiting the gorgeous Mirusha Waterfalls and Gadime Caves just outside of town, dining on delicious local fare at Molla Egër Agroturizëm, or checking out the unique architecture of the National Library of Kosovo, there’s something for everyone in this city.

Erjan and I explored sites within the city, like Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa and the Magic Ice Cheese Factory. We also ventured outside the city limits to the ancient city of Ulpiana, Bear Sanctuary Pristina, and Gračanica Monastery.

And, of course, we couldn’t visit Pristina without trying some delicious qebapa and qofte! But instead of me telling you about what a fantastic travel destination Pristina is, let me show you…

Pristina is the capital of Kosovo and the largest city in the country. For most visitors Pristina is a place where the atmosphere is as much an attraction as any classic tourist sight. If you plan to visit this beautiful city, this short Pristina tourism guide should help.

The main tourist attractions include the mosques: Çarshi Mosque, Imperial Mosque, and The Jashar Pasha Mosque. Other monuments from the ottoman period include the Great Hammam of Pristina, the Shadërvan, and the Clock Tower. Other interesting buildings are the Kosovo National Library, and the Former Hotel Union building. The most important monuments are the Newborn Monument and the Monument to Brotherhood & Unity. Here are also the statues of Bill Clinton and Skanderberg.

Hearty KOSOVO FOOD in Gjakova!! Exploring Kosovo's Oldest Bazaar | Gjakova, Kosovo

???? HOTEL CARSHIA E JUPAVE:
???? TRAVEL MEDIA EU:
???????? DAVID’S BEEN HERE KOSOVO & ALBANIA SHIRTS:

The fifth day of my epic road trip through Albania and Kosovo began with a drive to Gjakova, Kosovo! Join me as I enjoy some hearty Kosovo food and then explore Kosovo’s oldest bazaar in Gjakova, Kosovo!

???? RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

My day started at Terzijski Bridge, an Ottoman Bridge near Bistražin, between Prizren and Peja. It’s a beautiful medieval bridge that dates back to the 15th century. It’s an awesome example of Ottoman architecture in Kosovo!

My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I were both starving, so we set out to grab some food before exploring the city! We stopped at Hotel Carshia e Jupave, a hotel and restaurant in Gjakova that’s all about serving delicious traditional food. It’s Erjan’s favorite restaurant in the city!

In the kitchen, I watched the cooks bake bread and make meatballs, vegetables with meat, and much more!

At our table, we had an amazing-looking meat-and-vegetable tava, meat cooked on a stone, kofta (a meat patty with cheese on top), bread, cheese, and a salad. The meat was unreal, as was the beef tava. The beef was super tender and fell apart in my mouth. It was so juicy!

The beef-and-vegetable tava almost tasted like ajvar because of the red peppers in it. Ajvar is a paste made from red peppers and mashed eggplant. It was so tasty! Then, I tried some of the ajvar with the fluffy bread, which was fantastic. I loved it!

The kofta was nice and medium rare, just the way I like it. I couldn’t get over how good everything was. The best thing to do is to grab some meat, ajvar, and goat cheese with the bread and try it together. It’s unreal!

We finished with some local raki, which was nice and smooth!

Outside, we headed to a nearby café to grab a coffee to wake up after such a filling meal. Then, we headed to Old Bazaar, the oldest and most traditional bazaar in Kosovo. It’s non-stop restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops. This used to be an open-air market but has now been converted into commercial spaces.

The bazaar is huge. It consists of several shops, so there’s a lot to explore. We stopped by an arts and crafts shop where they can make sculptures of your family’s hands! From there, we stopped in a clothing shop with lots of traditional clothes with the Albanian double eagle! From there, we finished up by checking out a beautiful mosque!

What an awesome morning exploring Gjakova!

Gjakova and Peja emblematic cities of Kosovo

Two different cities: Gjakova and Peja.
Kosovo was not a revelation for you. Perhaps because of its small size or perhaps because it feels like an extension of Albania. For whatever reason, you say goodbye to the independent territory by visiting two of its most emblematic cities located in the western part of Kosovo.
Gjakova is a city with a long and varied history dating back to Roman times where you explore the old bazaar and the Gazi Mehmet Pasha Mosque.
Peja is a city nestled in the impressive Rugova Canyon where you visit the historic Ottoman-era bazaar, as well as one of the most beautiful monasteries you have ever seen.
