Way of Sant'Agostino, the last stretch of eastern leaf, from Gessate to Monza.

It picks up from the terminus of the green line of Gessate and - crossing the whole country - in 2.9 km you return to the actual path, along the Villoresi canal.
It is not as monotonous as we had feared, the channel is constant but the terrain varies and it passes from well-kept cycle paths to long grassy stretches, dirt roads and even narrow stretches of embankment bordered by thick brush.
The first part ends in Agrate.

Exploring Milan City Centre - VIDEO TOUR (Milan, Italy)

We flew into Milan Bergamo Airport, so it would be rude not to visit the city centre! We actually parked for free at Gessate subway station and took the M2 Green Line in (As we were nea that area anyway)... You can do this a lot closer, the price difference changes after Cascina Gobba on the M2 for instance, so parking by Cascina Gobba would be the best option if coming from the North East for the lowest fare vs the best free parking option!

You can access the city centre and pretty much everything you need to see in Milan from the Duomo stop on the M1 and M3 subway lines. The city bicycle rental is CRAZY cheap, around 25-50 cents for an hour! So getting around is no problem!

Milan (English /mᵻˈlæn/ or US /mᵻˈlɑːn/; Italian: Milano [miˈlaːno]; German: Mailand, Lombard, German: Mailand, Milanese variant: Milan [miˈlã]) is a city in Italy, capital of the Lombardy region, and the most populous metropolitan area and the second most populous comune in Italy. The population of the city proper is 1,346,000, and that of the Metropolitan City of Milan is 3,209,000. According to Eurostat, the commuting area has 4,252,000 inhabitants but its built-up-urban area (that stretches beyond the boundaries of the Metropolitan City of Milan), has a population estimated to be about 5,270,000 in 1,891 square kilometres (730 square miles), ranking 4th in the European Union. The wider Milan metropolitan area, known as Greater Milan, is a polycentric metropolitan region that comprehends almost all the provinces of Lombardy and the Piedmont province of Novara and has a population of about 8,500,000 people. Milan is the main industrial and financial centre of Italy and one of global significance. In terms of GDP, it has the largest economy among European non-capital cities. Milan is considered part of the Blue Banana and lies at the heart of one of the Four Motors for Europe.

Milan is an Alpha leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, design, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, services, research, and tourism. Its business district hosts Italy's Stock Exchange and the headquarters of the largest national and international banks and companies. The city is a major world fashion and design capital, well known for several international events and fairs, including Milan Fashion Week and the Milan Furniture Fair. The city hosts numerous cultural institutions, academies and universities, with 11% of the national total enrolled students.

Milan's museums, theatres and landmarks (including the Milan Cathedral, Sforza Castle and Leonardo da Vinci paintings such as The Last Supper, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) attract over 9 million visitors annually. Milan – after Naples – is the second Italian city with the highest number of accredited stars from the Michelin Guide. The city hosted the Universal Exposition in 1906 and 2015. Milan is home to two of Europe's major football teams, A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale, and one of the major basketball team, Olimpia Milano.

NOTE: There are a lot of African men giving you free african bracelets and selling selfy-sticks for 10EUR+ all around the tourist attractions. They will try and lure you in for handouts and acting really friendly. Might want to avoid from the start!

Milan Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Milano [ˈdwɔːmo di miˈlaːno]; Lombard: Domm de Milan [ˈdɔm de miˈlã]) is the cathedral church of Milan, Italy. Dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity (Santa Maria Nascente), it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Cardinal Angelo Scola. The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete. It is the largest church in Italy (the larger St. Peter's Basilica is in the State of Vatican City) and the fifth largest in the world.

Way of Sant'Agostino, final stretch of the eastern leaf.

From Agrate you pass under the A4 (the path seems to lead straight to the toll booth, then descends into an underpass) and after passing through some sheds you return to walking along the Villoresi canal.
S.Albino and S.Damiano are now close but there are still interesting views and lots of greenery, unfortunately dotted with all kinds of waste.
You get to the cemetery of Monza passing on the modern pedestrian bridge and from here a long straight road leads to the center, up to the Arengario and beyond, to the Villa Reale.
Here we enter the gardens of the Villa, we skirt the lakes and the valley of sighs to finally exit on the bridge over the Lambro, directly in front of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria alla Grazie, end of the stage.

Los Canales de Milan

The navigli (Italian pronunciation: [naˈviʎʎi]) were a system of navigable and interconnected canals around Milan, Italy.

The system consisted of five canals: Naviglio Grande, Naviglio Pavese, Naviglio Martesana, Naviglio di Paderno, Naviglio di Bereguardo. The first three were connected through Milan via the Fossa Interna, also known as the Inner Ring. The urban section of the Naviglio Martesana was covered over at the beginning of the 1930s, together with the entire Inner Ring, thus sounding the death knell for the north-eastern canals. Commercial carrying continued on the Naviglio Grande, but the decline was steady and by the 1960s a project of a fluvial port to reach the Po River and consequentially the Adriatic Sea through the canals was shelved for good.

Today, the canals are mostly used for irrigation. The only two canals who operate a tourist navigation system connected to the Darsena are the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese.

Girls trip to Italy (by train) part i | Slow travel diary

Last October my friend Emma and I took a girls trip to Italy by train. For this slow travel diary I show part i of our journey from London to Lecce.

We took the Eurostar from London to Paris and had lunch in Paris before taking the TGV train from Paris to Milan. We stayed overnight in Milan and spent the next day exploring the city before taking the sleeper train from Milan to Lecce.

Italy is one of the most popular holiday destinations for people in the UK. So I’m hoping that showing how much more of an adventure it is to travel by train will inspire others to choose slow travel over flying.

A few years ago I quit flying for holidays and since then whenever I go away I travel by land or sea, mainly by train or ferry.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable travel and seeing what other flight-free holidays look like I will be uploading more videos in the future which explore both.

For now though I hope you enjoy this video and see you soon!

Should I offset my flight?
