PENANG, MALAYSIA (2023) | 10 Awesome Things To Do On Penang Island

Penang island has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its colonial architecture, natural and cultural attractions, and some of the best street food in Asia. Here are 10 of the best things to do in Penang:

10. Try The Unique Cuisine Of Penang
Dishes you should try include Laksa, Cendol, and Nasi Kandar. In the heart of George Town you can also find the Chulia Street Night Market where you can sample some delicious Chinese-Malaysian food, such as Char Kuey Teow & Wonton Mee.

☑️ Penang Street Food Tour:

9. Explore George Town’s Historical Streets & Art Scene
When walking around the historical area, you’ll find lots of beautiful buildings and wall paintings, which represent images from Penang’s past and daily life.

???? Where we stayed in George Town - Attic Hotel:

8. Take The Funicular Up To Penang Hill
Penang Hill offers panoramic views of the city and the mainland in the distance. But you can also find a Hindu temple, a mosque, a variety of nature trails, an art gallery, and even cafés and food courts.

7. Discover Flora And Fauna At The Habitat
The Habitat is a rainforest discovery center that takes you into the heart of the jungle. It’s a treasure of biodiversity, boasting an abundance of wildlife. You can explore the forest by walking a nature trail, including informational signs, a canopy walk and a viewing platform.

☑️ Entry Ticket The Habitat:

6. Stroll Around Clan Jetties in George Town
Located at the waterfront, this unique type of settlement was created by Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century. There are now six jetties you can visit, and Chew Jetty is the most popular one with many souvenir shops and places to eat.

5. Explore Little Indi
The temple Sri Mahamariamman marks the start of the area and behind it, you’ll find colorful streets with goldsmiths and stores selling sarees and trinkets. But what we loved the most was the tasty and authentic Indian food.

4. Discover The Buddhist Kek Lok Si Temple
Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. The temple is made up of colorful prayer halls, beautiful gardens, ponds with fish and turtles, an impressive seven-tiered pagoda, and a large bronze statue of the Buddhist Goddess of compassion.

3. Hike At Penang National Park
Penang National Park is the smallest national park in Malaysia. There are 3 walking trails that cut through the jungle here. We decided to take the right fork to head to Monkey Beach, which is the most popular and easiest of the three trails as it’s relatively flat.

☑️ Monkey beach trail:

2. Sunbathe On Batu Ferringhi Beach
Batu Ferringhi Beach has powdery soft sands and turquoise waters to enjoy. It’s a great place to watch the sunset.

1.Balik Pulau Bike Ride
Balik Pulau is a hidden gem is covered by beautiful greenery, paddy fields, and rolling hills. It’s less populated and less developed than the rest of the island.

Exploring Penang (Georgetown): Things To Do in One Day

After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on:

Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!

To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.

We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.

In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.

To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.

Thank you for watching this “things to do in Geogetown, Penang” travel video. Hope you enjoyed it, and hope it will give you some ideas for what to do when you visit. More Penang street food videos coming soon!

Number 6. Photograph Penang's world-renowned street art
Three things make George Town famous: its colonial buildings, its food, and its street art. Walls in some parts of the city are given colour by murals of all shapes, sizes, and styles. Some of the images were made by well-known artists, such as Zacharevic, Alex Face, and Kenji Chai. Check out the Malayan Tiger, the Brother and Sister on a Swing, and the Window Cat.

Number 5. The architectural masterpiece of City Hall
The colonial past of George Town can be seen in its beautiful buildings. City Hall is the best place to see this. The neo-Baroque masterpiece near the Esplanade has arched windows and colonnades. The Municipal Council is now in the building that used to be the British City Hall. Tourists can't go inside a government building that is still in use. Use the Esplanade to take the best pictures.

Number 4. Discover the 'Penang Story' at the State Museum
The Penang State Museum is in a school from the time when Britain ruled Malaysia. Permanent exhibitions use art, photographs, and old maps to tell the story of Penang. Find out how people lived during the British era. Find out what the most important things that happened in George Town were. Learn about the famous Penang Riots of 1867 and see a copy of the home of a Chinese trader.

Number 3. Southeast Asia's oldest Anglican church
In 1819, St. George's in George Town, Malaysia, became the first Anglican church in Southeast Asia. In the 19th century, when more people were moving to Malaya, the British built a church for them. The whitewashed building has parts that are neoclassical, English Palladian, and Georgian. Walk around the church's grounds and look at the different shapes and styles of its buildings. St. George's is part of the UNESCO Heritage of George Town and is still used today.

Number 2. Fort Cornwallis: Malaysia's biggest fort
In northeast George Town, the star-shaped bastion is falling apart near the Straits of Melaka. Fort Cornwallis was built in 1786 to protect Penang from pirates, who were getting more and more dangerous. It is the biggest fort in Malaysia, covering almost 39 square metres. Some of the original walls still stand, and they now surround a small park.

Number 1. Explore George Town's colonial heritage
George Town was a busy colonial port in Malaysia. The British were rich because they mined tin, had rubber plantations, and grew coffee in the nearby state of Perak. These goods were shipped out of Penang. George Town's legacy from that time is the number of buildings that have been kept. Some of the best British buildings in Malaysia and Southeast Asia are in the capital of Penang.

Top 10 Places in PENANG Malaysia - Highlights / Best things to do [Travel Guide]

I came to Penang on 3 separate visits and got to see most of the important places on the entire Island. Thus, it was time for me to provide you my Top 10 list of the best places that have to be on your itinery when you are planning you next visit. Penang has very well preserved much of its history; it can be seen as what Singapore used to be in 1960. The entire old city of Georgetown has been granted world heritage status by UNESCO, which ensures its preservation for the future. Penang has many beautiful museums, beaches, temples, mosques and churches that are worth to be visited. In addition, Penang is a real paradise for foodie travelers. Its local cuisine ranks among the best in the world. All in all, Penang provides you quite a good mix between sightseeing and chillout time.
Very nice to visit is the Goddess of Mercy temple with its many chinese lanterns. You will be meeting many locals who come here for prayers. Allover Penang, there are plenty of chinese temples, this has much to do with the chinese Malaysians forming the majority over there. A bit outside of Georgetown would be the Shamrock beach with its unique rocks. It's a very quiet spot that can be easily enjoyed alone. 15 minutes by walk would be the floating mosque, a major islamic place of worship on Penang island. It nicely blends into the local fishing village. The snake temple is another highlight of Penang. It's a very unique chinese temple that hosts plenty of snakes. They are all harmless! The Burmese Buddhist temple is a hidden gem of Penang. It shows the diversity among its local Buddhist community but also marks a unique piece of heritage. Go up to the pagoda and enjoy a beautiful vista over the temple complex! Just on the other side of the street would be the Thai buddhist temple, which charms with its glittering dragons. The Batu Ferringhi Beach is one of Penang's most beautiful beaches. Its great to visit during any time of the day; best however are early morning and late afternoon. The many clan jetties (UNESCO World Heritage) are very interesting floating settlements of the local chinese people. There you can shop at boutiques or enjoy the local delicassies. Furthermore, each jetty has a beautiful view over the local village. Visit all of them! The blue mansion is one of the major pieces of Heritage in Penang. It's a museum, which used to once serve as the embassy of the chinese empire. It's a hotel and has even been featured in Crazy Rich Asian Hollywood movie! Make sure to book your tour to get access to the Blue Mansion. The Peranakan Mansion (Green Mansion) is a museum at where you can learn about the rich lifestyle and culture of the Peranakans. The Peranakans are the offspring of Chinese traders and local Malays/Natives. Their culture is a beautiful blend of chinese and malay/aslian; religionwise they follow the Chinese. Armenian street is the touristy centre of Georgetown. Every weekend up from 4pm there is a street market, which is very enjoyable! Make sure to visit Penang during the 7th and 8th day after chinese new year. There will be many celebrations including dragon and lion dance as well as other cultural performances! The very highlight is the Kek Lok Si Temple dedicated to the Goddess of mercy. It's the largest chinese buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. Visit it during chinese new year to see the many lanterns.

A few useful tips for people who only stay 2-3 days in Penang:
Places like the national park and Penang Hill require quite some time to visit and should rather be skipped for short visits. However, if you stay longer, it is a great idea to include them. Traveling in Penang was for me the most convenient using Grab Taxi, as it was cheap and highly efficient.

George Town is one of Malaysia's biggest and most interesting cities.

George Town is the capital of the island and state of Penang.
It is also one of the Malaysian oldest cities.

For being a cosmopolitan city throughout its long history it was listed as World Heritage Site.
And Armenian Street is in the heart of this UNESCO Zone.

Padang Kota Lama or Esplanade is a large waterfront area around which are several important landmarks like
Town Hall
City Hall
or in front of the sea, just behind those trees The Cenotaph.

The Cenotaph is a memorial erected to remember those who died in World War I.

Built on the site where Captain Francis Light, founder of Penang, first landed,
Fort Cornwallis is a fortification built by British in the late 18th century.

In its entire history, the stronghold has never engaged in any battle.
And just next to this fort is another tourist attraction the Queen Victoria Clock Tower.

Very close to Esplanade are located:
St. George’s Church
And the very impressive Court Buildings

Penang State Museum
And Church of the Assumption.

And just a stone’s throw from there is the Protestant Cemetery the burial site of many important people for the city.

In George Town there are many churches, temples and mosques.

Along the shorelines are Clan Jetties, the traditional Chinese settlements
Locals live there in stilted huts built on the sea.

Along the shorelines is also very nice promenade.

And there are many parks where you can relax.

An important place to visit is, once a Chinese residence, today a museum, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.

There are Chinese temples in Little India and mosques in Chinatown.
George Town has a real mix of cultures.
And Buddhism is one of the greatest influence.
There are several Buddhist temples around the whole island.
Including two opposing each other on the same street.
These are Burmese Buddhist Temple
and Thai Buddhist Temple with one of the world’s longest reclining Buddha.

There is also Kek Lok Si Chinese Temple.
It is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia.
It is also an important pilgrimage center for Buddhists from around the world.
At the top there is a bronze statue standing 30 meters tall of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.
And she has a magnificent view of the city and the sea.

You can also find a nice view of the island from Penang Hill.
