During the Autumn I decided to go for a quick getaway to the Black Forest in Germany. Because of the dark moody weather the landscapes and forests looked even more mystical.

STREET VIEW: Gengenbach im Schwarzwald in GERMANY
Wir haben direkt vor den Toren der Stadt auf dem Parkplatz des Flößereimuseums geparkt. Hier kann man noch für 0,30 Euro eine halbe Stunde parken. Der Rundgang beginnt deshalb auch auf der Brücke über die Kinzig. Über die Hauptstrasse geht es bis zum Rathaus und dann über Victor-Kretz-Straße bis zum nördlichen Stadttor. Dann geht es hinüber bis zur Hochschule Gengenbach und dann über die Klosterstraße in die Feuergasse. Über die Hauptrasse geht es anschließend in die Engelgasse und dann über Mercyscher Hof zurück am Rathaus vorbei bis fast zum südlichen Stadttor.

The Black Forest is a large forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in south-west of Germany.
It is bounded by the Rhine valley to the west and south.
Its highest peak is the Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 metres.
The region is roughly oblong in shape with a length of 160 kilometres and breadth of up to 50 kilometres.
The main industry of the Black Forest is tourism. Black Forest Tourism assesses that there are around 140,000 direct full-time jobs in the tourist sector and around 34.8 million tourist overnight stays in 2009.
In spring, summer and autumn an extensive network of hiking trails and mountain bike routes enable different groups of people to use the natural region.
In winter, of course, it is the various types of winter sport that come to the fore.
There are facilities for both downhill and Nordic skiing in many places.
The most heavily frequented tourist destinations and resorts in the Black Forest are the Titisee and the Schluchsee.
Both lakes offer opportunities for water sports like diving and windsurfing.
From Freiburg these lakes may be reached on the B 31 through the Höllental, via the Hirschsprung monument located at the narrowest point in the valley, and the Oswald Chapel below the Ravenna Gorge.
One oft-visited town is Baden-Baden with its thermal baths and festival hall.
Other thermal baths are found in the spa resorts of Badenweiler, Bad Herrenalb, Bad Wildbad, Bad Krozingen, Bad Liebenzell and Bad Bellingen.
Noted for their fine interiors are the former monastery of St. Blasien as well as the abbeys of Sankt Trudpert, St. Peter and St. Märgen.
Alpirsbach Abbey and the ruined Hirsau Abbey were built of red sandstone in the Hirsau style.
The Murg valley, the Kinzig valley, the Triberg Waterfalls and the Open Air Museum at Vogtsbauernhof are also very popular.
There are well known winter sports areas around the Feldberg, near Todtnau with its FIS downhill ski run of Fahler Loch and in Hinterzarten, a centre and talent forge for German ski jumpers.
In the Northern Black Forest the winter sports areas are concentrated along the Black Forest High Road and on the ridge between the Murg and Enz rivers around Kaltenbronn.
The height differences in the mountains are used in many places for hang gliding and paragliding.

Gengenbach | Prettiest Town in Germany | Baden-Württemberg
Gengenbach is a historic town delightfully set in the Kinzigtal of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) and boasting romantic half-timbered houses in narrow streets in the style of the Romantic Road (Romantischestrasse).
The city is an important link in the Baden-Württemberg German Wine Route (Weinstrasse). Gengenbach has been referred to as a “pearl among the Black Forest towns”.
The town hall in Gengenbach has been a magical attraction during the Advent season for many years: with its 24 windows, it becomes the world's largest Advent calendar house.

Das schmucke Gengenbach vereinigt die architektonischen Reize einer alten Reichsstadt mit denen der malerischen Landschaft des Schwarzwälder Kinzigtals und ist heute überwiegend vom Tourismus und Weinbau geprägt. Zahlreiche Gastronomiebetriebe und Geschäfte aller Art sind rund um den alten Marktplatz mit dem Röhrbrunnen und dem steinernen Ritter mit der Urkundenrolle in der Hand angesiedelt.
Von der mittelalterlichen Stadtbefestigung sind Teile der Schutzmauer und einige Stadttore erhalten, die zusammen mit den schönen barocken Fachwerkhäusern aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, und dem stattlichen im klassizistischen Stil erbauten Rathaus von 1784 ein reizvolles Stadtbild abgeben.
Im alten Löwenbergpalais aus dem 18. Jahrhundert werden die Sammlung des Städtischen Museums und Wechselausstellungen mit anspruchsvoller moderner Kunst gezeigt. Sehenswert ist auch das Fastnachtsmuseum im alten Niggelturm, der früher als Wehrturm und später als Gefängnis diente. Auch der Narrenbrunnen
Der östliche Teil der Gengenbacher Altstadt wird von den Gebäuden, der Kirche und dem romantischen Klostergarten der ehemaligen Benediktinerabtei dominiert. Der Klosterbezirk war im Mittelalter durch eine zusätzliche Mauer von der Stadt getrennt, da sich die freiheitsliebenden Gengenbacher und das Kloster nicht immer grün waren.
Die ehemalige Klosterkirche ist eine der wenigen guterhaltenen romanischen Kirchen im Mittelschwarzwald. Die motivreiche Ausmalung des Innenraums ist ein Werk der vorletzten Jahrhundertwende. In den 1980er Jahren wurde vom Landesdenkmalamt entschieden, die für romanische Kirche untypische Bemalung des Innenraums zu erhalten.
Den schönsten Blick auf Gengenbach genießt man vom 259 m hohen Bergle, den man in 15 Minuten bequem zu Fuß von der Innenstadt aus erreicht. Auf dem von Weinstöcken umgebenden Hügel hatten bereits die Kelten und später die Römer ein Heiligtum errichtet. Die dortige Wallfahrtskapelle St. Jakob mit charaktervollen Heiligenfiguren ist um 1661 errichtet worden und ist noch heute Station am Jakobusweg.
Das schöne Stadtbild, der gute Wein, das gute Essen und die zahlreichen Geschäfte lassen kaum einen Wunsch offen in Gengenbach.

Gengenback is a small medieval town nestled in the Central Black Forest. It's one of the nicest towns in the area with many half-timbered houses, several watchtowers and a historical town centre. We usually try to stop at Gengenbach for a quick visit before heading further into the Central Black Forest. Next stop is Triberg.
