This is Guinea Bissau, Africa You Don't See on TV #GuineaBissau Africa Ep. 6

Guinea-Bissau is a tropical country on West Africa’s Atlantic coast that’s known for national parks and wildlife. The forested, sparsely populated Bijagós archipelago is a protected biosphere reserve. Its main island, Bubaque, forms part of the Orango Islands National Park, a habitat for saltwater hippos. On the mainland, the capital, Bissau, is a port with Portuguese colonial buildings in its old city center.

The distance from Jegue border to Bissau is about 130km. It takes about 3 and half hours drive due to the poor state of the roads. Which is surprising because along the way there's about 5police stops where you will have to pay for the road at every stop. It's also advisable to have a 4 wheel drive especially during rainy season.

So let's talk a little bit about Guinea Bissau. Did you know that Guinea Bissau official language is Portuguese but is spoken by only about 11% of the population. The local dialect is creole
2. The main form of foreign exchange is Cashew nuts. Some people call it the cashew coast of Africa
3. 80% of the population is employed in Agriculture with cashewnuts be in my the major two ethnic groups being Fulani being at 28% and balanta at 23%,

Cities
Bissau - capital
Bafatá - Bafata is a pleasant town with an interesting colonial centre, located on the Rio Gêba. Hometown of Bissau-Guinean patriot Amilcar Cabral. Ask around near the old market to visit his house.
Bissora - Bissora is a town in the region of Oio. The majority of people living in the Bissora sector belong to the Balanta ethnic group.
Bolama - capital of the country until 1941, has some magnificent examples of colonial architecture and has been suggested as a world heritage site.
Buba - End of the tarmac going to the south of Guinea-Bissau. The town is built along a tidal river, the Rio Grande de Buba. Decent hotel.
Bubaque - Largest town in the Bijagos archipelago, with hotels and harbor for boat trips to other islands.
Cacheu - Cacheu was once an important place for slave-trading, and there is still a little fort.
Catió-
Farim
Gabú - Bustling, friendly market town with a few nightclubs, bars and hotels.

Key Destinations
- Bijagos Islands - an archipelago of some twenty tropical, beautiful islands. On the island of Orango it is possible to see hippos, and there are many other possibilities of eco tourism on the unspoiled islands. On some islands there are even turtle nesting grounds. Many islands have French-owned fishing lodges.
- Varela - Just south of Cap Skirring, but on the Guinea-Bissau side of the border, it is a tour de force to get to Varela on a 50 km long bumpy dirt road from São Domingos - but it is all rewarded when you reach this little paradise, with a superb Italian-owned hotel, beautiful beaches and pine forests and a very relaxed atmosphere with almost no other tourists. You may contact the small hotel in Varela via their Facebook page: Aparthotel Chez Helene
- Boé Sector - The country's most South-Eastern corner is a mosaic of savannah, forest and farmland. Its remoteness has left the sector underdeveloped, but its Fular/Mandinka population is warm and welcoming. Primates constitute the majority of large mammals in the Boé, chiefly among them a healthy population (possibly 1000+) of chimpanzees. Although they are shy and not habituated to humans, there is a chance for ecotourists to spot humanity's closest relative. The Fonda Huuwa campsite in the main village Béli offers huts and meals at shoestring prices.

GUINEA-BISSAU: Visas in Bissau and political rallies // EPS 7.

What do you think about when you hear the name of the country Guinea-Bissau? I have to admit that I didn't know much about Guinea-Bissau before I visited. But that was about to change:
After Gambia we drove into Senegal again and from there took the closest border to Guinea-Bissau. Our first destination: The capital Bissau to get the visa for Cote D'Ivoire that was denied to us in Dakar.

On our ride through Guinea-Bissau we realized quickly that it's one of the most laid back countries we visited so far - and we were invited to join the rallies of the two competing parties for the presidential election in the town Gabú (there was not much a choice to avoid this though, all places that sold food were as well packed with the people taking part in the rallies).

Join me for the journey through Guinea-Bissau and get to know this country that is one of the least traveled in the world.

//NOTE: videos were recorded before I had a Youtube Channel - initially used for my Instagram stories. That's the reason for the close ups of my face - they were recorded vertically. I still decided to use them - that's the authentic footage I have and I can't change that anymore. Remember: I just started out with filming and cutting - its a learning curve and far from perfect! If you mind seeing my nose hair every now and then, I can highly recommend you to skip this part of the journey and join again when I will publish my next trips after the country Benin with hopefully improved footage!

How Safe Is Guinea Bissau for Travel?

Full safety review:

Guinea-Bissau is a former Portuguese colony, located in Africa, and bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east.

It was once a part of the Kingdom of Gabu, which was a part of the Mali Empire, and Europeans came to claim it around the 18th century.

This country’s coasts and rivers were among the first places colonized by the Portuguese.

The country has once seen as a huge potential for development but has since deteriorated and have become one of the world’s poorest nations.

Overall, when crime is concerned, Guinea-Bissau is not as dangerous as you might think, but it still has its issues and it is advised that you plan your trip well before venturing to this country. Exercise maximum precaution measures.

Mercado Central in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau

Mingle with the natives and experience the local culture at Mercado Central, home to a variety of small shops and vendors that sell handmade shoes, clothes, and furniture. This is also a great place to try the national cuisine, so don't hesitate to sample some of the area's fresh specialties.
As Guinea-Bissau is one of 10 poorest countries in the world the goods are rare and the market is basically to cover the most important needs. You will find the market together with shops. As there is almost no tourism in Bissau, you hardly can buy a souvenir. The market is for local people. They buy chairs, working tools, medicaments, food and cloth, if they have the money for it. The economic situation is critical and people often have no money in the pocket and buy on credit.
