China's Ancient City Fuzhou Fujian

We spend the day touring around Fuzhou city and end up in the Ancient City area. With 2000 years of history this place was an interesting site to see. Come join Weifang and I on this little adventure.

In 2011 my first grandchild was born with a rare and complex genetic condition called Prader Willi Syndrome. This condition comes with many symptoms, the most prevalent being that she is plagued to feel hungry constantly. Although she is living a life of continued challenges associated with her condition, she is an amazing little girl who has and continues to face everyday with a smile and determination to do her best. My daughter Miranda has set up a fundraising page in support of the Foundation of Prader-Willi Research Canada whose mission is to eliminate the challenges of Prader Willi Syndrome through the advancement of Research. I would greatly appreciate if you would show them some support in their fundraising efforts. Your donations will help make a difference in my granddaughter Emelyn’s life. She is a special little girl.
Thank you!

Why foreigners should visit Quanzhou, a rarely visited but totally underrated city! EP15, S2

I stayed in Quanzhou for quite some time, and it quickly became one of my favorite cities in China.
Foreign tourists are rare, but Quanzhou is a hidden gem. And I have enough reasons to say that. As the birth place of Fujianese culture and the first Chinese trade ports that opened up to the outside world Quanzhou is the place to find a huge diversity in Fujian Province:

⭕️ Kong Fu and Shaolin Temple
⭕️ Beautifully preserved historical city quarter (UNESCO sites!)
⭕️ Great food, laid back, and stunning landscape
⭕️ Incredibly diverse religion, and you can find temples, mosques, churches...
and the list goes on...

In short, it is a super laid-back city with modern charm, and an ancient soul!

Driving Downtown Fuzhou | The City Of Banyan Tree | Fujian Province, China | 福州 | 榕城

Fuzhou, the capital city of southeast China's Fujian Province, is nicknamed Rongcheng, literally translated as The City of the Banyan Tree.

The origin of this nickname dates back about 900 years ago to the Northern Song Dynasty.

At that time, the city frequently suffered from flooding and summer heat. In order to provide a better environment for the citizens, the local governor, Zhang Boyu, advocated that the city should be green, and no parasols should be needed in summer.

He made policies encouraging each family in the city to plant the banyan tree. And so, Fuzhou became known as The City of the Banyan Tree.

Today, the largest banyan tree in Fuzhou is growing in Fuzhou National Park. It is said that the tree was planted during Zhang Boyu's rule, hence it is about 900 years old.

The giant banyan tree has a height of 20 meters and the ground projection area of the canopy is more than 1,330 square meters. Called the King of Banyan Trees by locals, the tree, especially its spectacular canopy, is also a paradise for birds.

As a fig species, the banyan starts its life as an epiphyte, which means a plant that grows on another plant.

It will envelope the host tree, putting considerable pressure on the latter, before eventually killing it. According to experts, the Banyan King is likely to be two trees growing into one.

As a result, when spring comes, about half of its crown sprouts first, and when the old leaves gradually turn to yellowish and red, the other half of the crown begins to sprout.

Because the banyan tree has no cling roots that reach the ground, the forest park's craftsmen have built concrete columns to support its trunk.

Pingtan Island Walking Tour, China's Most Beautiful Island | 4K HDR

Friends, this time I can finally come to this most beautiful island in Fujian and shoot a video of the beautiful seaside scenery for everyone.

Pingtan Island or Haitan Island is an island of Fuzhou off the east coast of mainland Asia in Pingtan County, Fujian Province, China, south of the complex estuary of the Min River.

It is the largest island in Fujian and the sixth-largest island in China.

Locating off the eastern coast of Fujian Province, Pingtan China is under the administration of Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province. Pingtan is adjacent to the Taiwan Strait in the east and Haitan Strait in the west, near Fuqing City and Putian City.

Dubbed as the “County of Islands”, Pingtan consists of 126 islands, whose sea area is much larger than the land area, with a 400 km (249 mi) long coastline, offering tip-top romantic coastal views. Pingtan Island, a famous fisher base, is also the largest island of Fujian Province and 6th largest island in China.

Comprising of so many islands, Pingtan is also known as “Maldives” of China, offering the best coastal scenery and water entertainments. Staying here at least 3-5 days, or you will miss some most-visited tourist attractions.

The three routes list the most classic spots in Pingtan. For example, Longfengtou Beach, with crystal clear water, is also one of the largest natural beaches in China, where you can enjoy a variety of water entertainments like drifting boat and jet board.

Camping with a bonfire party and fishing with locals in Tannan Bay are activities you cannot miss. Haitan Ancient City with ancient architecture style is also worth a visit. If you prefer hiking, then the Pingtan Island National Forest Park is a good option. Anyway, Pingtan is a place which deserves much time to explore.

The best time to visit Pingtan is from late June to early September. Off the East China Sea, Pingtan features a subtropical maritime climate.

The annual temperature is about 19.6℃ (67.3 ℉) with many rainy days. The spring of Pingtan starts from March to April, a little cold and rainy.

The summer, May to September, is also the season of thunderstorm and typhoon. Travelers should keep an eye on the weather forecast before departure. October and November are autumn when the weather is cool and windy. From December to February, the wintertime of Pingtan is not very cold and the average temperature is about 10-18℃ (50-64.4 ℉).

-----------------------⭐⭐

As a coastal city with frequent strong winds, Pingtan is one of the places in China with most potential to be used for wind power generation and more than 230 square kilometers of land has been deemed suitable for wind farm construction.

Changjiang'ao wind power farm, situated next to Guocai village in Baiqing township, is one of the major clean energy projects in Pingtan. The lines of towering turbines with the enchanting seaside views as a backdrop draw in numerous visitors every year.

Walking In Fuzhou's Temples | Xichan Temple | Dingguang Pagoda Temple | Fujian, China | 福州 | 西禅古寺

An aged-old national key temple with an international fame

As one of the national key temples as well as the first of the five Buddhist temples in Fuzhou City, Xichan Temple has been stood for over 1130 years and underwent natural disasters and warring damages in its long-term development since built in 867 of Tang Dynasty (618-907).

Covering an area of 7.7 hectares, the temple is grand with 36 halls that all oriented south and north.

Xichan Temple enjoys a fame home and abroad. Today, it still designates monks to manage its overseas low houses of Shuanglin Temple in Singapore, Shuangqing Temple in Malaysia, South Putuo Temple, Guanyin Temple etc. in Vietnam.

Xichan Temple is no doubt a good platform to exchange culture and Buddhism among Southeast Asian countries; and also, a great number of foreign eminent monks and disciples flock to the temple every year, always making a big spectacle.

History of Xichan Temple and its precious historical relics

Xichan Temple was built by a great monk of Tang Dynasty, named Da An (793-883). Born in Fuqing County of Fujian Province, he was initiated into monkhood in his 24 in Qianyuan Temple, and then he visited in Jiangxi Province and later lived in Hunan Province for 30 years.

After he got back to Fujian Province and completed the construction of Xichan Temple, his followers lived in the temple have reached 3000. He also was once awarded as a master with a purple Kasaya robe and Tibetan sutra by the emperor.

Today, relevant records still can be found in the well-preserved tablet inscription of Tang Dynasty in the temple.

Later, another master of the temple, the abbot Hui Ji has planted 4 Litchi trees in the temple; the one in the west direction of which is still sturdy which has stood for over 1000 years.

A memorial tower with a tablet inscription for him is also the important historical relic in the temple.

Xichan Temple was repaired twice in Song Dynasty (960-1279); the present scale and layout was finalized in Qing Dynasty (1636-1911), and most of the halls can be seen today were rebuilt in modern times because of the damages in wars.

What to see in Xichan Temple?

Xichan Temple boasts for its grand of full functioned 36 halls, precious cultural relics as well as its great landscape art within numerous Litchi trees and Mango trees. A zigzag bridge on the Free Life Pond features southern gardens and the reflections of towers on the lake are just beautiful to be blended in the delightful natural sceneries. A small exquisite garden in the temple is characteristic by rockeries and a Mingyuan Pavilion, which is the site for Litchi Party of past dynasties.

Litchi trees with deep cultural connotation

Xichan Temple is charming with beautiful natural sceneries with the most famous litchi trees attracting renowned scholars with their praising words and sentences in successive dynasties.

There are hundreds of Litchi trees in the temple with the oldest one planted in 9th century by the master Hui Ji. The temple teems with Litchi during mature season and many stories and poems have left by men of letters in the annual Litchi party which remains today.

Tops in Xichan Temple
There are two jade josses donated by overseas Chinese placed in an exclusive hall the Jade Joss Hall of the temple.

One Buddha is a sitting Sakyamuni in a height of 2.3 meters; the other is a reclining Sakyamuni with a 4-meter body length and 10-ton weight, marking the No.1 jade Buddha in the country.

In Guanyinge hall in the temple, there is a grand thousand-hand and thousand-eye Bodhisattva which was also the only one that molded from 29 tons brass in the country.

Bao’en Tower (Chinese: a return tower), the highest Buddhism temple in the province, was built in 1990 with 15 stories and a height of 67 meters.

It was built from the raising money by the abbot of Shuanglin Temple of Singapore who was appointed by Xichan Temple.

The name of the tower comes from the abbot’s return for the temple’s cultivation.

The tower is a dignified and magnificent art tower covered by elegant granite, and decorated by colorful patterns of fowls and beasts, flowers, plants, insects and fish, with elaborate carvings on the walls depicting beautiful stories of Buddhas and Buddhism.
