Cuando se habla de Uruguay en el extranjero suele asociárselo a su costa oceánica y al este en general, con lugares destacados a nivel internacional como
Punta del Este, José Ignacio, Piriápolis, como así también toda la costa de oro. Sin embargo la costa de Uruguay es mucho más que eso, ya que el país cuenta hacia el oeste con un litoral con el río de la Plata y Río Uruguay que no tiene nada que envidiar a otros lugares.
Lugares como Carmelo, Fray Bentos, Mercedes, Paysandú y Salto pueden llegar a ser destinos excepcionales tanto para un viaje en soledad como una estadía en familia.
En este video vamos a ver un poco, solo un poco de lo que el litoral uruguayo tiene para ofrecernos con sus encantos naturales y su gente.

After a Rock'n'Roll weekend at my friend Fede's house I leave Argentina for Uruguay. It only took me a bit over two years to get here hahaha.
I was riding from Buenos Aires via Zapate and the impressive bridges there to the North to cross over to Uruguay near Fray Bentos.
Besides the bridges and the border crossing it was a quite boring ride along those straights, but well, I made it over the border and found a very nice bush camp spot by the river right where Rio Paraná and Rio Uruguay meet.

Fray Bentos es una ciudad que se encuentra en la República Oriental del Uruguay y es capital del departamento de Río Negro. Fue fundada oficialmente el 16 de abril de 1859, aunque su origen es anterior. Inicialmente se llamó Villa Independencia y en 1900 cambió su nombre a Fray Bentos. Su población a 2011 era de 24 406 habitantes.
Algunos historiadores consideran que al instalarse en su territorio la Compañía Liebig, se inició la Revolución Industrial en el Río de la Plata.
Está ubicada sobre la margen este del río Uruguay, cuenta con un puerto ultramarino de aguas profundas y se encuentra unida a la provincia de Entre Ríos, República Argentina, por la obra binacional Puente Libertador General San Martín.
Desde 2006 la ciudad cobró mayor notoriedad por el conflicto fronterizo producido por la construcción y posterior instalación de la planta productora de pasta de celulosa de la empresa finlandesa Botnia, actualmente UPM.
En julio del 2015 fue incluida en la lista del patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco, dentro del conjunto «Paisaje Cultural Industrial Fray Bentos».[3]
El nombre Fray Bentos acarrea cierta incertidumbre, no obstante hay coincidencia en que podría provenir de un fraile de apellido Bentos, un religioso ermitaño que se instaló en la zona denominada hoy como Caracoles, sobre el río Uruguay. En la cartografía desde la mitad del 1600, comienza a figurar como toponímico FrayVento lo que induce a pensar que para tener importancia y ser reconocido como lugar geográfico, debería haber tenido varias décadas de uso.
El fechamiento del término Fray Bentos lleva a los investigadores a referencias muy atrás en el tiempo. Ya en 1692, un viaje por el Río de la Plata y sus afluentes, hecha por el capitán Manuel de Ibarbelz, siguiendo órdenes del entonces gobernador de Buenos Aires, Don Agustín de Robles, da cuenta en su diario y anotaciones cartográficas sobre las barrancas de Fray Bentos, además de otras observaciones detalladas de la geografía inconfundible de los alrededores de la ciudad.
En otro ámbito de investigación, el historiador uruguayo Ariosto Fernández, haciendo referencia a la Carta Española del Río de la Plata, Uruguay y Paraná (época de Felipe V, 1703), realizada por el capitán de Ingenieros Gregorio Gómez, descubre la referencia al toponímico Fray Bentos.
Otra documentación que menciona el nombre Fray Bentos es el mapa De las Misiones de la Compañía de Jesús en los ríos Paraná y Uruguay, delineado por un sacerdote jesuita de nombre Joseph Quiroga y Méndez, en 1749. Este mapa fue posteriormente publicado por Franceschelli en el año 1753 en Italia. El mapa en cuestión se refiere a cursos de agua y menciona Fray Bentos como uno de ellos, nombre que hoy sigue llevando un arroyo al sur de la ciudad, el mismo observado por Quiroga y Méndez.
Durante el período de gobierno de Juan Manuel de Rosas en Buenos Aires, el río Uruguay se abrió a la navegación y se fomentó la exportación por vías acuáticas. En 1855 el puerto de la ciudad de Gualeguaychú no daba abasto con el comercio existente, además de tener dificultades con el calado que no permitía el ingreso de embarcaciones de regular tamaño, obligando a las mismas a recalar en el atracadero de Fray Bentos, sobre la costa oriental. En la otra orilla, las barrancas ofrecían un excelente puerto natural, pero no había allí ningún centro poblado.[4]
El Dr. Isidoro de María, vicecónsul uruguayo en la ciudad de Gualeguaychú, comenzó a alentar la radicación de personas en la orilla oriental y a despertar el interés de inversores en una zona que prometía mucho futuro. Por entonces, 1857, un hombre de negocios radicado en la ciudad de Gualeguaychú, el vasco-francés José Hargain, decidió instalar una hostería en la orilla de Fray Bentos, tarea que llevó adelante no sin antes solicitar permiso a la familia Haedo propietaria de las tierras, de manera que Hargain fue el primer poblador de la zona específica de lo que sería posteriormente la ciudad de Fray Bentos.
En 1858, un grupo de empresarios uruguayos, ingleses, alemanes e irlandeses, provenientes de Montevideo, compraron las tierras y donaron al gobierno uruguayo las manzanas suficientes como para fundar allí lo que inicialmente se llamó Villa Independencia (16 de abril de 1859).

Unesco World Heritage Sites: Industrial Landscape in Uruguay
This is a tour through the company, learning about its history from 1863 to today.
I strongly recommend doing the tour. It costs only around 1 dollar and it lasts around 2h. Currectly they have one that leaves at 9:30am and another at 5:30pm (summer 2018).
It is heavy to digest, you will for sure reflect upon lots of different topics. From hunger cause by wars, to animal cruelty and poor labor conditions, to wonders of science, and people's resilience.
More than an abandoned factory, I will garantee you that.

Panamericana Ep73 - Riding along Rio Negro to Fray Bento, Uruguay
After spending a week at the free campground in Gregorio de Polanco I left this beautiful spot and made my way back to the border to Argentina.
I have to fly home to Austria for two months to sort some things out like selling my cars there and move out of my living community room and find a storage for all my guitars and amplifiers.
Anyway, it was a nice easy ride to the border. 30 km before I found a bush camp spot at a road where I spend my last night out alone before I get back to Buenos Aires to stay in a hostel again.
The music is once again by my friends of the band SÜMA from Spain. Thanks guys!

A literacy rate of 99% thanks to the provision of free compulsory education from primary level through to university level. Montevideo derived from Portuguese, Monte vide eu, meaning, I see a mountain, historic downtown business/financial district comprising of magnificent art deco and imposing neoclassical buildings jostle for space alongside grimy, worn-out apartment blocks more in keeping with Havana. Beneath grime and murals the numerous apartment blocks with beach frontage and million dollar ocean views are public housing or as the locals say, self contained villages with the best views in Montevideo, they are right. Never judge a book... Punta del Diablo a small fishing village, 1000 delightful locals, vast sand dunes, miles of pristine deserted beaches pounded by the South Atlantic, heaven. Established by the Portugese in 1680, Colonia del Sacramento Barrio Histórico area justifiably designated a World Heritage Site. Atop the 17th century lighthouse Buenos Aires clearly visible across the Río de la Plata the widest river in the world, maximum width 220 kilometres, where the first naval battle of the Second world war occurred. We suspect the yerba-maté sucking, spliff toking, young, self-assured, incredibly kind, vibrant, laid back populous cultivate gliding peacefully under the radar. That being the case, they have this approach mastered. A liberal, egalitarian society, River of the Painted Birds is a gem of a country. And Neil thought Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie originated from a canning factory in Northumberland.
