***???????????????? ????????????????????????????***
The origin of the village is linked to the need of the populations who lived on the Gulf of Gaeta to move to new settlements in a protected position on the surrounding hills, to defend against Saracen raids. Maranola is mentioned for the first time in 1029 and again in 1045, when it is indicated as castrum, a place fortified with walls and towers. In 1041 the existence of a via carraria de Maranola is also attested.

Under the Caetani a new wall with three towers was then built, the only access to which was the so-called ravellino, demolished at the end of the 19th century. The village was placed under siege in 1347 by Nicola Caetani as part of the clashes conducted to regain Mola, Castellone and Traetto. His son, Onorato I Caetani, had a castle built there which took from him the name of Castello Onorato. In April 1400 it was besieged by the troops of Ladislao I of Naples.

In the 15th century it had the status of a *university* and the statute states that it included the hamlets of Mamurrano, Ponzanello and Trivio in its territory. In 1414 the property was sold to Pietro Origlia, count of Caiazzo, but Cristoforo Caetani took it back by force. In 1428 it became an autonomous municipality together with a quarter of the territory of Maranola.

In 1491 it was in possession of Caterina Pignatelli, in 1504 by Prospero Colonna and in 1691 it passed to the Carafa, who kept it until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.

****Additional Info****
Maranola is also famous for its *Festival of Environmental Arts* / Seminaria and its *Living Cribs*.
The first, which invites international artists to dialogue with the small village of Maranola and its inhabitants, developing new projects through a period of residency with immersive and multimedia installations, performances, interactive works, video projections, murals, sculptures and other forms of contemporary art.

The second, the *Living Cribs*, takes place every year on December 26th and January 1st and 6th Maranola is transformed into a nativity scene. The doors of the houses open, the old mills shine again, the ancient crafts come back to life.

In der Altstadt von Fondi / in the historic center of Fondi

Etwa stündlich halten hier Regionalzüge in beide Richtungen.

According to a legend Fondi have been founded by Hercules himself. With the construction of Via Appia, in Roman times, an important trade route, Fondi gained importance. This important role remained the city in the following centuries. In the Middle Ages this area was in the southern government oft he Vatican also important for relations between the Vatican and the Kingdom of Naples.
Typical of Fondi, the network at right angles crossing, smooth paved streets that still retraces the road network in the Roman period. Other highlights in the center, which is visited by very few other tourists, the weighty medieval city castle from the 13th-15th Century as well as the pedestrian area of Corso Appio Claudio.
Fondi is host to various festivals, including the International Folklore Festival Città di Fondi, which takes place every year in August, the Fondi Art Festival, a cultural festival (in July each year) and in July or September take place the FondiFilmFestival.

Fondi owns a train station (about 3 km south of the center) on the main railway linee between Rome and Naples. Regional trains stop here every hour in both directions.
The national transport company Compagnia Trasporti Spa Laziali, also enjoys good bus connections to several destinations such by Lenola, Santi Cosma e Damiano, Itri, Minturno-Scauri Monte San Biagio, Terracina, Gaeta and Formia. The local bus company Piazzoli, operates the city buses in Fondi, and the bus to Sperlonga.
However in Italy, the tickets must be bought in the Tabacchi shops at the central bus stations.

In the territory there are traces of human activity starting from the upper Paleolithic.
According to a mythical tradition, near Sperlonga stood the city of Amyclae (in Greek Αμύκλαι), founded by the Spartans.

In Roman times, numerous villas arose in the territory, framed in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Fundi, the most famous of which is the so-called one of the emperor Tiberius, including a modified natural cave decorated with sculptures from the cycle of Ulysses. The villas also served as production centers for the fishing industry.

In the 6th century the ruins of the imperial villa were used as a refuge, but the town developed on the nearby promontory of San Magno, a spur of the Aurunci mountains, to defend against raids by sea by the Saracens. The name probably derives from the large cave (spelunca) incorporated in the villa of Tiberius.

The castrum Speloncae is mentioned in a document from the 10th century: it included a small church dedicated to St. Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. The town developed around the castle progressively, in concentric circles.

In the 11th century the town was surrounded by walls, of which two....
