Tikal Ruins are breathtaking Mayan Ruins in Northern Guatemala. Tikal is one of the most popular places to visit in Guatemala so we wanted to show you how to experience it to the fullest!
We first spent a few nights on Flores Island before making our way into Tikal park. We wanted to thoroughly experience the ruins so we did the SUNRISE tour, explored on our own midday and did the SUNSET tour. We were blown away by the grandeur of this place and the nature all around. And as always, we provide as many tips and prices as possible so you can do this trip as well!

Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Central America. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! We explain the process of obtaining entrance tickets and journeying from Guatemala City to Flores to Tikal. And this wouldn't be a WITY TRAVELS video if we did not shop in a market! So you know we will be doing that.
In the heart of the jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation, lies one of the major sites of Mayan civilization, inhabited from the 6th century B.C. to the 10th century A.D. The ceremonial centre contains superb temples and palaces, and public squares accessed by means of ramps. Remains of dwellings are scattered throughout the surrounding countryside. Tikal National Park is one of the few World Heritage properties inscribed according to both natural and cultural criteria for its extraordinary biodiversity and archaeological importance.
It was used as a filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

Guide to visiting Flores & Tikal Guatemala (2019) Mayan Ruins
In this episode we stay on in the picturesque town of Flores in Guatemala and share with you our experience of visiting the Mayan site of Tikal.
Flores is a small and beautiful town located on and island in a lake. The island is easily accessible as it is connected to .the mainland by a bridge. We show you all the island. Flores is a meca for tourist arriving in Guatemala from Belize or as a final stop before heading to Belize and is the main place that tourists stay to visit the Mayan Ruins of Tikal.
We took a day tour to the Mayan Ruins of Tikal, which are located approximate one and a half hours drive from Flores. A site filled with mystery - make sure you have a guided tour as the guides are very knowledgable and without them you would be walking around the ruins and tikal without learning anything about the Mayan history or way of life - they're also great for spotting and pointing our wildlife on the way.
We recommend visiting Tikal early in the morning as by 11am the weather is very hot and nearly 40 degrees celsius. We left at 4.30am and there is a tour that leaves around 3am if you want to watch the sun rise over the ruins.

Most people use Flores, as just a jumping off point to explore Tikal. Flores is the capital of Petén. Peten is the largest department in Guatemala. It was on this island that the Maya established NojPetén, their final stronghold in the face of the Spanish conquest. The town of Santa Elena is located on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, and it is connected by a causeway to the island. San Benito is next to Santa Elena. We will try local food on the waterfront of the causeway, wander through the Santa Elena Market, and search for the best place in San Benito, to see the island of Flores from afar. Come with us, as we look for the hidden gems, of Flores.

A Tourist's Guide to Tikal and Flores, Guatemala
From Belize, I fly Tropic Air (as the only passenger) to Flores, Guatemala, gateway to the Tikal Ruins. After landing, I transfer to the jungle, staying at the Jaguar Inn.
Then next day, I take a trip around the ruins.
Then I head back down to Flores Island for the night.
Flying to Flores, Guatemala from Antigua
We had to stop off in the only town left before Tikal for a quick recharge and get some work done before we head into the jungle of norther Guatemala! Turns out, it was a perfect stop to get what we needed and an interesting town.
