Macedonia today is a geographical region of Greece, and the largest of the Greek territory.
It constitutes most of the geographic and historical region of ancient Macedon, a Greek kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II.
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the Hellenistic period.
The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders.

Florina (Greek: Φλώρινα) is a town and municipality in mountainous northwestern Macedonia of Greece. Its motto is, 'Where Greece begins'. It is also the Metropolitan seat for the region. It lies in the central part of Florina peripheral unit, of which it is the capital. Florina belongs to the periphery of West Macedonia. The town's population is 16,771 people (2001 census). It is in a wooded valley about 13 km (8 mi) south of the international border of Greece with FYROM.
Several etymological interpretations ave been attempted and assumptions have been made concerning the origin of the name of Florina. According to one mythological interpretation the name of the town derives from the mythical Dioskouros Kastoras and his ally Floris. The Byzantine historian kantakouzinos refers to the Byzantine castle Flerinon or Hlerinon , the secretary of the Enetic Republic G. Cavazza on his wary from Ahrida in 1591 passes by through Fluribelli; where as the Turkish interpretation of the town's name, salvaged by the Albanian invaders of the 17th and 18th century, refers to the Filourina version which dervies frm filouri meaning old coin. In 1750 the name Herinos or Filorina appears in ecclesiastical documents.

Αρχαιότητα
Λυγκηστίς ή Λύγκος είναι η πανάρχαια ονομασία της περιοχής της Φλώρινας. Αρχαιότερες πόλεις ήταν η Ηράκλεια, (στην περιοχή Φλώρινας), η Κέλλα (σημερινή Κέλλη) και η Βεύη.
Η Λυγκηστίς ήταν αυτόνομο κράτος με δυναστικό οίκο συγγενή προς τους Βακχιάδες της Κορίνθου, ώσπου την υπέταξε ο Φίλιππος ο Β', πατέρας του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου και την προσάρτησε στο βασίλειο της Μακεδονίας («των γαρ Μακεδόνων εισίν και Λυγκησταί» Θουκ., Β', 99). Πριν την κάθοδο των Δωριέων, οι Βρύγες κατοικούσαν στις Πρέσπες.
Ο Βρομερός, πατέρας του Αρραβαίου και γιος του μυθικού Αερόπου, ήταν ο ιδρυτής της λυγκηστικής δυναστείας. Κόρη του Αρραβαίου ήταν η Ευρυδίκη, η οποία «Φιλίππου μήτηρ ην» (Στραβων VII, 326) και επομένως γιαγιά του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου.
391 π.Χ. Ο Λυγκηστής βασιλιάς Αργαίος εκθρονίζει το βασιλιά Αμύντα Γ' και παίρνει το θρόνο όλης της Μακεδονίας για λίγα χρόνια.
352 π.Χ. Ο Φίλιππος ο Β' χτίζει την Ηράκλεια.
336 π.Χ. Οι Λυγκηστές πρίγκιπες Αρράβαιος και Ηρομένης συμμετέχουν στη δολοφονία του Φιλίππου του Β'. Ο Μέγας Αλέξανδρος τους θανατώνει ως διεκδικητές του μακεδονικού θρόνου.
334 Π.Χ. Ο Λυγκηστής στρατηγός Αμύντας διακρίνεται στη μάχη του Γρανικού. Ο Μέγας Αλέξανδρος αργότερα του απονέμει το βασίλειο της Βακτριανής (άλλοι Λυγκηστές αξιωματούχοι της ίδιας εποχής: Λεοννάτος, Πελαγών, Αέροπος, Κρατερός).
148 π.Χ. Η Μακεδονία γίνεται provincia romana (Ρωμαϊκή Επαρχία) και η περιοχή της Φλώρινας υπάγεται στην 4η Τοπαρχία της «Ανω Μακεδονίας».
48 π.Χ. Η Ηράκλεια πυρπολείται στη διάρκεια του ρωμαϊκού εμφύλιου πολέμου.
Βυζαντινή εποχή
Στα χρόνια του αυτοκράτορα Ιουστινιανού του Α', η Λυγκηστίς υπάγεται στην 7η επαρχία του «Ιλλυρικού» και αναφέρεται ως «Ηράκλεια Λάκκου». Οι Επισκοπές Μογλενών (Φλώρινας) και Πρεσπών υπάγονται (535 μ.Χ.) στην Αρχιεπισκοπή της Αχρίδας.
Στην Ε' Οικουμενική Σύνοδο υπογράφει και ο Επίσκοπος «Ηράκλειας Πελαγονίας» (553 μ.Χ.) 715-730 μ.Χ. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, ο έκπτωτος Πατριάρχης της Κωνσταντινούπολης Γερμανός ζει και πεθαίνει στον ομώνυμο του σήμερα Δήμο Πρεσπών, Aγιος Γερμανός.
1Οος αι. μ.Χ. Σφοδρές συγκρούσεις των Βυζαντινών με τους Βουλγάρους στην περιοχή Φλώρινας και Πρεσπών. Ο Τσάρος των Βουλγάρων Σαμουήλ μεταφέρει το λείψανο του Επισκόπου Λάρισας Αχίλλειου στην ομώνυμη νησίδα της μικρής Πρέσπας.
1017 μ.Χ. Μάχη του Βασιλείου του Βουλγαροκτόνου με τον Τσάρο των Βουλγάρων Σαμουήλ το νεότερο στην περιοχή της σημερινής Κοινότητας Σκοπού. 1096 μ.Χ. Οι Νορμανδοί του Βοημούνδου κυριεύουν τη Φλώρινα και τις Πρέσπες. 12ος αι. μ.Χ. Τάγμα «Μογλενιτών» στο στρατό του αυτοκράτορα Αλεξίου Κομνηνού.
