Along the Riviera del Brenta from Fiesso d'Artico to Dolo, Italy

The Riviera del Brenta which is an area between Padua and Venice along the Brenta channel passing the towns of Stra, Fiesso d'Artico, Dolo, Mira, Oriago and finally to the Venice Lagoon. Having left my motorhome in Fiesso d'Artico, I walk along the Brenta to Dolo.

The Brent is navigable by river boats and in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries wealthy Venetian merchants built palaces along the channel which we can see today. These villas were often next to farms, for the merchants it was a way of reinvesting funds from their trading activities.

As you can see in the accompanying film and photographs, some of these villas are absolutely magnificent - and to a large extent despite the fame of Venice and Padua are not well known outside Italy.

These palaces include the enormous Villa Pisani in Stra, Villa Ferretti-Angeli in Dolo, Villa Widmann-Foscariin Mira, and Villa Foscari a.k.a. La Malcontenta in Malcontenta. Some have museums attached showing life at the time the villas were built. Some smaller ones are still in use today as residences Some of them have also beautiful gardens, with small woods, fountains, mazes and small lakes. Many of the villas are in the Palladian style, and a few were designed by Andrea Palladio himself or by his pupil Vincenzo Scamozzi.

Stra on the Riviera del Brenta, Italy

Stra is located on the Riviera del Brenta between Padova and Venice and is home to a number of Venetian villas, including the most famous of them all, the Villa Pisani.

Villa Pisani

It was begun in the early 18th century for Alvise Pisani, the most prominent member of the Pisani family, who was appointed doge in 1735. The initial models of the palace by Paduan architect Girolamo Frigimelica still exist, but the design of the main building was ultimately completed by Francesco Maria Preti. The villa has on its walls the works of Giambattista Tiepolo and other famous painters.

When it was built the building had 114 rooms, in honour of its owner, the 114th Doge of Venice Alvise Pisani. The most important room is the Napoleon Room and its near bathroom, furnished with pieces from the Napoleonic and Habsburg periods and others from the Pisani period.

In 1807 it was bought by Napoleon from the Pisani Family, now in poverty due to great losses in gambling.

In 1814 the building became the property of the House of Habsburg who transformed the villa into a place of vacation for the European aristocracy of that period.

In 1934 it was partially restructured to host the first meeting of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini - this is discussed in the accompanying video.

From the outside, the facade of the oversized palace appears to command the site, facing the Brenta River some 30 kilometers from Venice. The villa is part of a series of villas, which the Venetian noble families and merchants started to build in the 15th century. However, unlike the earlier buildings, which were designed as to be a pleasure house and an agricultural enterprise, Villa Pisani was primarily built as a demonstration of the power achieved by the family, since one of them, Alvise Pisani, was elected doge in 1735.

The broad façade is topped with statuary, and presents an exuberantly decorated center entrance with monumental columns shouldered by caryatids. It shelters a large complex with two inner courts and acres of gardens, stables, and a maze. Giovanni Tiepolo decorated the massive frescoed ceiling depicting the Glory of the Pisani family (painted 1760–1762).[1] Additional frescoes and paintings are by his son Gian Domenico Tiepolo, Crostato, Jacopo Guarana, Jacopo Amigoni, P.A. Novelli, and Gaspare Diziani. The bombastic allusions of the ceiling echo hollow in the now uninhabited shell of a palace. The remainder of its nearly 100 rooms are now eerily empty; on the first floor there are several rooms with furniture of the 18th and 19th century.

12+ town DOLO. VENETION REGION. ITALY

Dolo is a town and comune in the province of Venice, Veneto, Italy. It is connected by the SP26 provincial road and is one of the towns of the Riviera del Brenta.

The growth of the town of Dolo is due to the gradual downsizing of the maritime power of Venice which was historically oriented towards Dalmatia, the Aegean Sea and the Middle East, occurred concurrently with the fall of the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic expansion and the new opening of navigation routes to the Americas.

The resulting was the need to address inland its new commercial interests.

At the beginning of the fifteenth century, documents testify to the existence of a village which, developing, gave rise to the economic importance of Dolo, always linked to the construction of its water mills collecting the wheat from the nearby agricultural lands and then grinding the flour and embarking same into cargo boats pulled by horses along the banks of the Brenta Canal to the lagoon, from where they continued directly up to the Venice island settlement.

Drinking water, too, was carried from Dolo to the center of Venice by cargo boats with big barrels filled directly from springs of the little river Seriola.

The territory was affected by massive hydraulic works that led to the diversion of the main bed of the river Brenta through an artificial canal with new mouths along the southern sea approaches of the port of Chioggia, while just one part of the old Brenta still flows into the lagoon near the location of Fusina.

The purpose of these megalithic hydraulic works was primarily to prevent the progressive flooding of the lagoon by the fresh water of the rivers and thus maintaining a high degree of salinity necessary to make viable the navigation and the same existence of Venice.

Until 1405 the jurisdiction of Dolo was under Padua, and then passed definitely under the dominion of Venice.

A boat called the Burchiello transported Venetians noblemen directly to the Riviera sailing along the river Brenta, which was considered as a natural extension of the Grand Canal, to spend summer in their sumptuous villas.

The water level of the navigable river ways were controlled by a system of locks which are nowadays still visible in the center of Dolo, even if the evolution basin is now ground filled.

An old marble table is still shown nearby to show toll tariffs for the transit in the locks for each type of boats coming from or going to Padua.

Close to basin, there is a small shipyard, now dismissed, which was anciently used to repair and shelter the boats prior or after transiting the locks, while laboratories of caulk were housed all around.

The origin of the name of Dolo is quite uncertain and controverted.

One hypothesis asserts the name comes from the contraction of Dandolo, surname of a noble Venetian family who gave a doge to the city of Venice and had properties here.

From old maps it appears that the town’s name was sometimes reported as “ Dollo “ which in archaic Italian language could also mean a tower which was probably demolished thereafter, unless it refers to church’s belfry which is the highest in the region of Veneto, just second to St. Mark’s belfry in Venice.

A lovely picture of the ancient locks of Dolo of the Venetian painter Canaletto is visible in a museum in London.

Dolo, Italy

Dolo is located between Padova and Venice, one of the towns of the Riviera del Brenta and has many Venetian palaces. There is a place to park one's vehicle on the western side of the town as I show in the video which is alongside the Brenta.
