Places to see in ( Darmstadt‎ - Germany )

Places to see in ( Darmstadt‎ - Germany )

Darmstadt is a city near Frankfurt in southwest Germany. It’s known for the Mathildenhöhe district's art nouveau buildings, like the iconic Wedding Tower. Museum Künstlerkolonie features art nouveau glass, textiles and jewelry. Hessisches Landesmuseum displays art by Joseph Beuys. Northeast, the Messel Pit has Eocene-era fossils. To the south is ruined Frankenstein Castle, which may have inspired the famed book.

Beautiful Jugendstil (art nouveau) architecture and excellent museums are the biggest draws of this strollable city 35km south of Frankfurt. Famed for its technical university, Darmstadt is a designated Wissenschaftsstadt (City of Science). The super-heavy element Darmstadtium was first created at Darmstadt's GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research) in 1994. The city’s glass-and-stone conference centre is also called the Darmstadtium.

In 2017, Darmstadt won Germany’s first ever Digital City award for its investment in a sustainable digital future; already, the power supply for the entire tram network has been converted to 100% green electricity. The surrounding area has some fascinating sights, including the Unesco-listed archaeological site Grube Messel, and fabled castle Burg Frankenstein.

Prior to World War I, Darmstadt was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. The Grand Dukes used to live in what is now the Schloss Marktplatz. It is also the birthplace of the last Empress of Russia, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova, who was born Prinzessin Victoria Alix Helena Louise Beatrice von Hessen und bei Rhein. Sadly, much of the old town was destroyed in carpet bombing by the Allies during World War II, and most of what is still standing was reconstructed after the war. Darmstadt also lost its status as the capital of Hesse after the war, the honour now lying with the nearby city of Wiesbaden.

The popular recreational drug Ecstasy was first synthesised in Darmstadt in 1912 by a chemist known as Anton Kollisch while he was working for the pharmaceutical company Merck. The element Darmstadtium, element 110 on the Periodic Table, is named after the city. Perhaps as many as 11 atoms of this short half-life element have been synthesized to date.

Places to see in ( Kassel - Germany )

Kassel is a city located on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany. Kassel is the administrative seat of the Regierungsbezirk Kassel and the Kreis of the same name. The former capital of the state of Hesse-Kassel has many palaces and parks, including the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kassel is also known for the documenta exhibitions of contemporary art.

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe includes Wilhelmshöhe Palace (with the Antiquities Collection and Old Masters), the Hercules monument, and the Lions Castle. Wilhelmshöhe Palace above the city, was built in 1786 by landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel. The palace is now a museum and houses an important collection of Graeco-Roman antiques and a fine gallery of paintings comprising the second largest collection of Rembrandts in Germany. It is surrounded by the beautiful Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe with many appealing sights. The complex was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.

Another large park and also part of the European Garden Heritage Network is the Karlsaue along the Fulda River. Established in the 16th century, it is famous for the Orangerie, a palace built in 1710 as a summer residence for the landgraves. Today, the Orangerie contains the Museum of Astronomy and Technology, with a scale model of the Solar System spanning the entire park and beyond. In addition, the Park Schönfeld contains a small, municipal botanical garden, the Botanischer Garten Kassel.

Kassel has seven tram lines (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8), with trams arriving usually every 15 minutes. The city also operates a light rail Stadtbahn network called RegioTram using Regio Citadis low-floor trams which run on both tram and main line railway tracks with four lines (RT3, RT4, RT5, RT9). Moreover, a number of low-floor buses complete the Kassel public transport system. The introduction of low-floor buses led to the development of the Kassel kerb which improves the accessibility at bus stops. The city is connected to the national rail network at two stations, Kassel Central, and Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. The traditional central station (Hauptbahnhof) has been reduced to the status of a regional station since the opening of the Hanover-Würzburg high-speed rail line in 1991 and its station (Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe) on the high-speed line at which the InterCityExpress (ICE) and InterCity services call. Kassel is connected to the motorways A 7, A 49 and A 44. The city is served by Kassel Calden Airport.

Places to see in ( Kassel - Germany ) Lowenburg Castle

Places to see in ( Kassel - Germany ) Lowenburg Castle

he Löwenburg is a built in 1793 pleasure palace in Kassel Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. The castle, built as an artificial castle ruin , stands above the Wilhelmshöhe Castle in the southern part of the Bergpark and thus south of the visual axis Schloss Wilhelmshöhe- Herkules at about 350 m above sea level. NN on the eastern edge of the Hoher Habichtswald . The Löwenburg served its builder landgrave Wilhelm IX. from Hesse-Kassel as a private retreat and in 1821 also his tomb. In terms of art history, the facility is considered groundbreaking, as one of the first important buildings of the Gothic Revival in Germany.

The castle, which was inspired by a hilltop castle, was designed by Heinrich Christoph Jussow between 1793 and 1801, ie centuries after the actual construction of castles in Germany. It is the imitation of a medieval knight's castle and was built, romantically historicizing, deliberately as an artificial ruin. Initially planned only as a ruinous tower with outbuildings, eventually a complete castle complex was created, which is grouped around a courtyard. The plant served the landgrave as a residence for himself and his mistress Karoline von Schlotheim . In 1821 he became Elector in 1803Wilhelm I raised landgrave buried in a crypt under the castle chapel. The lion castle was built from the beginning of less weather-resistant hawk tuff , which was available near the site and is easy to work.

Until 1945, the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force flew several attacks on Kassel. The city suffered the heaviest attack on October 22, 1943. Due to the armaments industry and above all the dense development in the old town area with the slightly fire-catching half-timbered houses Kassel moved according to the Area Bombing Directive early on the list of cities, for a firebombing attack especially appeared suitable. This was the keepthe Löwenburg mostly destroyed (only the stair tower with some remains of walls remained) and large parts of the facility, including the kitchen and connector construction, severely damaged. Reconstruction in the post-war years was rather expedient and characterized by functionality rather than attention to detail. In 1957 extensive reconstruction work was carried out in the women's building, which had the goal to be able to take up sheltered inventory from the destroyed keep. The works are not finished yet. The keep is currently being reconstructed and is scheduled to reopen in 2022 with a 25 meter viewing platform.

The interiors consist of four princely residential apartments in baroque style. In an armory there are numerous historical weapons and plate armor of the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle chapel is equipped with numerous objects of medieval churches from the northern Hessian environment and has a crypt with the tomb of the elector under the choir. Numerous pieces of equipment of the historical collection, which was outsourced during the war, are still in depots or are exhibited at Schloss Friedrichstein . Their return should not take place until the reconstruction of the castle is completed. The interiors can be visited as part of guided tours.

Hercules Monument - Kassel, Germany - Löwenburg Castle

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a medium-sized English garden built into the side of a mountain in the town of Kassel, central Germany. As with most English style gardens, the Bergpark features a number of interesting follies or features, including a ruined aqueduct, a replica Swiss bridge, a Gothic castle, an enormous statue of Hercules, and what was once the world largest and most complex water feature. It's very beautiful, and an incredible feat of engineering, and we had a great time checking it out in spite of the cold!

Meersburg Travel Guide: Top Attractions in this Charming German Town ????????

Meersburg

Meersburg is a town in Baden-Württemberg in the southwest of Germany, nearby Lake Constance.

It is known for its medieval city. The lower town (Unterstadt) and upper town (Oberstadt) are reserved for pedestrians only, and connected by two stairways and a steep street (Steigstrasse).

The name of the town means Castle on the Sea, referring to a castle which, according to a tradition from 1548, was built here in 630 by the Merovingian king Dagobert I.

The commune obtained the status of a free city in 1299, though nominally still under the Bishop of Constance. In 1803 it was annexed to the Electorate of Baden.

After World War II, Meersburg was in the French military occupation area in Germany.

The town is home to two castles, the Old Castle and the New Castle. The Old Castle, built by Merovingian King Dagobert I in the seventh century, is one of the oldest surviving castles in Germany. It is in private ownership. A self-guided tour is available. German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived there for eight years and purchased the Prince's House. The New Castle was built in the eighteenth century. Originally the residence of the bishop of Constance, it was used for various purposes after the Secularization of 1803. It is now a museum. There is also an expanse of half-timbered houses, and two medieval town gates, which are the remains of the fortification.
