I took the train from Budapest Keleti station to Miskolc to visit my Hungarian relatives. Lots of corn fields and sunflowers, made me think that Hungary (in the center of the continent) is the European equivalent of Kansas.

Eger Hungary AirBNB. WOW!!! What an AMAZING ROOM!! - Eger Hungary - ECTV

Eger (UK: /ˈɛɡər/ EG-ər,[2] US: /ˈeɪɡər/ AY-gər;[3][4] Hungarian: [ˈɛɡɛr] (listen); also known by other alternative names) is the county seat of Heves County, and the second largest city in Northern Hungary (after Miskolc). A city with county rights. Eger is best known for its castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings, the northernmost Ottoman minaret, dishes and red wines. Its population of around 53,000 makes it the 19th largest centre of population in Hungary according to the census. The town is located on the Eger Stream, on the hills of the Bükk Mountains.

The origin of its name is still unknown. One suggestion is that the place was named after the alder (égerfa in Hungarian) which grew so abundantly along the banks of the Eger Stream. This explanation seems to be correct because the name of the town reflects its ancient natural environment, and also one of its most typical plants, the alder, large areas of which could be found everywhere on the marshy banks of the Stream although they have since disappeared. The German name of the town: Erlau, from Erlen-au ('elder grove'), also speaks in favour of this supposition. And there is another theory which says that Eger's name comes from the Latin word: ager ('field'). This theory comes from more recent researchers[who?] who think that during the 11th and 12th centuries settlers with a Walloon origin (latins in Hungarian) moved to this territory. The basin of Eger and the hilly region around it have always been very suitable for human settlements, and there are many archaeological findings from the early ages of history, which support this fact.

The other names of the town are in Latin Agria, in Serbian and Croatian Jegar / Јегар or Jegra / Јегра, in Czech and Slovene Jager, in Slovak Jáger, in Polish Jagier, and in Turkish Eğri. Nickname: the Hungarian Athens

The shield of Eger developed from the shield of Bishop György Fenesy (1686–1689) after an agreement which was made with him in 1694. The bastion with the three gates on it refers to the existence of the fortress. The rampant unicorn between the two bastions on the side of the shield came from the bishop's shield. The sword in the fore-feet of the unicorn symbolises the manorial power of life and death. The snake twisting on the sword stands for the defeat of treachery and hatred by faith. The star and the sun symbolise the alternation of days and nights. And finally, the eagle with a gospel in its clutches refers to apostle and evangelist Saint John who is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Eger.

Today's Eger was formed in the 10th century by St. Stephen (997–1038), the first Christian king of Hungary, who founded an episcopal see in Eger. The first cathedral of Eger was built on Castle Hill, within the present site of Eger Castle. Eger grew around this cathedral, and remains an important religious centre in Hungary.

This settlement took up an important place among the Hungarian towns even in the early Middle Ages. The natural fundamentals of the surroundings (meeting of plains and hills) made it possible to establish economic and cultural relations between the different parts of the country.

During the 11th and 12th centuries, Walloon settlers came from the areas beyond the Rhine. They settled with the kings' permission, bringing western culture to this region and acclimating the viticulture. The development of the town accelerated with their presence.

This development was blocked for a short time by the Mongol invasion in 1241, when the town was ransacked and burned down during the episcopacy of Cletus Bél.

After the withdrawal of the Mongols, Eger began to flourish all over again. Lampert, the bishop of Eger, received a permit from Béla IV for building a stone fortress. So the nearly destroyed town revived and reached the peak of its medieval development in the l4th and 15th centuries. During this period the forests which spread to the limits of the town were cleared for the most part, and vines were planted in their place. More and more town-houses were built in the settlement. Roads were constructed among which the ones in the inner town were narrow and twisting but those leading to the northern mining towns were wider. The various surrounding settlements such as Almagyar and Czigléd were built up along with Eger.

VISIT BUDAPEST - Walking Tour of the Best sights of Budapest

Welcome to Hungary, Budapest Walking Tours..!

Heroes Square.
Heroes' Square, is one of the major squares in Budapest, Hungary, noted for its iconic Millennium Monument with statues featuring the Seven chieftains of the Magyars and other important Hungarian national leaders, as well as the Memorial Stone of Heroes, often erroneously referred as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The square lies at the outbound end of Andrássy Avenue next to City Park (Városliget). It hosts the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Art (Műcsarnok). The square has played an important part in contemporary Hungarian history and has been a host to many political events, such as the reburial of Imre Nagy in 1989. Most sculptures were made by sculptor György Zala from Lendava, with one made by György Vastagh.

Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube. Its 19th-century Chain Bridge connects the hilly Buda district with flat Pest. A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces city life from Roman times onward. Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views.

Hungary ???????? Budapest.
In Budapest it is not worth making a quick visit for a weekend, as there are many attractions to visit and because the topography of the city has an amazing variety. The mountains of Buda, the beautiful banks of the Danube, Margaret Island and the bustling old town of Pest are all worth seeing. The divided character of the city by the Danube is special and immediately surprises visitors. The difference between the two parts linked by bridges, Buda and Pest, is a specialty that offers different trips to the past. While in Buda we are captivated by the spas of Turkish times, the tranquility of the Tabán and the cobbled alleys of the historic Castle district, Pest delights with its variety: the elegance of Andrássy Avenue, the fabulous Opera House with a metropolitan character, the marvelous dome from the Basilica, next to the contemporary museums, the typical bar areas and the alternative places of unique character with their hidden world. We have two attractions that are part of the UNESCO world heritage: the panorama of the Danube bank and the neighborhood of the Buda castle and the Andrássy avenue with its historical surroundings. Among the 10 main attractions of Budapest, we could list 10 others of equal importance: we could list here the Museum of Applied Arts, part of secessionist heritage, the works of modernist and Bauhaus architecture, the so-called buildings of socialism, or the building modern yet unassuming 21st century Palace of Arts encompassing a wonderful concert hall and the Ludwig Museum. Those who spend just one weekend visiting Budapest run the risk of having to return. Budapest offers several dozen adventures…!

Budapest Beauty.
A stunning capital, with the green hills of Buda and urban Pest separated by the Danube, Budapest is a real gem. Despite the end of the Soviet influence, it is only today that signs of its recent independence are felt. Budapest boasts a vibrant nightlife, offers many architectural finds and winding little streets to explore as well as various cellars full of wine to sample! The country is surrounded by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia and Croatia, making it a Central European country; don't forget this because the Hungarians, or “Magyars” as they like to call themselves, do not consider themselves to belong to Eastern Europe. Often compared to Vienna, Budapest is an up-and-coming city with plenty to see, do and taste. Freed from the Soviet and communist grip for only 21 years, the past enthusiasm for the reconstruction of the city is still present. Roads are built throughout the city, buildings are renovated and cleaned one after the other, bars and restaurants appear everywhere, as do shopping areas. The communist era is finally fading little by little.

How to get from Keleti Pályaudvar Train Station to Vaci Street. - Budapest Hungary - ECTV

Budapest Keleti (Eastern) station (Hungarian: Keleti pályaudvar) is the main international and inter-city railway terminal in Budapest, Hungary.

The station stands where Rákóczi út splits to become Kerepesi Avenue and Thököly Avenue. Keleti pályaudvar translates to Eastern Railway Terminus. Its name in 1891 originates not only for its position as the easternmost of the city's rail termini, but for its original role as a terminus of the lines from eastern Hungary including Transylvania, and the Balkans. In contrast, the Nyugati (western) railway station used to serve lines toward Vienna and Paris.

Miskolctapolca Cave Baths and the Lillafüred Forest Train | Miskolc, Hungary

We already loved baths, but this one was our favourite because it was built inside a cave system! There were baths of varying temperatures, spa treatments, and a floating sensory deprivation chamber. Definitely the best bath experience we've had to date, with all the cool nooks and crannies of the caves to explore and bathe in. We then travelled a little bit further to Lillafüred using a scenic train that traversed the Hungarian countryside, seeing little villages in valleys and lush forests along the way. Lillafüred itself is remote, peaceful, and relaxing-- it's already on our list for a recharging weekend getaway!
