Jerusalem can be divided into three sections: the Old City, West Jerusalem. And East Jerusalem. Ancient stone walls encase the Old City. You can access the grounds via seven different gateways. Within these walls, you'll find the city's most prominent attractions, including the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock. And the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Outside of the Old City, you'll discover Jerusalem's thriving yet laid-back metropolis. West Jerusalem buzzes with life, with much of the action centered on Jaffa Road. And Ben-Yehuda Street. Here, you'll find a variety of shops, restaurants. And bars. East Jerusalem is the hub of the city's Arab community. Not as modern as West Jerusalem, the East—especially the areas right outside the Old City's Damascus. And Herod's Gates—brims with lively markets.

Jerusalem Travel Documentary - Ten Beautiful Places to Visit

Jerusalem is one of the world’s oldest cities and a fascinating travel destination. It’s holy to Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and has been at the crossroads of cultures and religions for millennia. While it continues as a spiritual and historic center, it is also a dynamic city, where traditional lifestyles blend with cosmopolitan ideas.

In this video, I will show you 10 beautiful places in Jerusalem that I visited, as part of a longer journey through the Holy Land, an area that is known today as Israel and Palestine.

From the historic center of Jerusalem with its narrow alleyways and religious landmarks, to the bustling modern city around Jaffa street. From intriguing neighborhoods like Nahlaot and Mea Shearim, to the mountain village of Ein Karem. And from the moving Yad Vashem memorial to the vibrant Mahane Yehuda market.

Jerusalem is a complicated city, in many ways, and is also at the center of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. However, this video should be seen as a traveler’s perspective of the city, focusing on positive stories and things to do. For those interested in the modern political history of the region, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

This is my first long trip after the pandemic started, and I’m grateful for the chance to travel again. It’s also my second visit to the region, and therefore I use both new and older footage for this video.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey through Jerusalem in the Old City, where many of the most important sights are located. Its winding alleys lead you through quiet residential neighborhoods and bustling markets. The Old City is divided into four quarters, the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Armenian, and all have their own character.

It’s in and near these neighborhoods that you’ll find some of the holiest sites of the three main monotheistic religions, including the Western Wall, the Temple Mount (known as Al-Haram Ash-Sharif) to Muslims), with its incredible Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Via Dolorosa. If you want to take it all in from a distance, the Temple Mount offers one of the best viewpoints in Jerusalem.

Move away from here, and you’ll find that the Old City is actually a small part of today’s Jerusalem. Its modern center has a very different character, with the charming Mamilla shopping street, bustling Jaffa street, and the vibrant Mahane Yehuda market, which is not only a food paradise, but also gives an insight into the daily lives of Jerusalemites.

Close to the market is the friendly Nahlaot neighborhood, while Mea Shearim is one of the city’s most conservative areas, mostly inhabited by Haredi Jews, many of whom lead traditional lifestyles.

Perhaps the most moving and powerful museum in the world, Yad Vashem is a memorial to the six million Jews that died in the Second World War. Visitors can learn about the Holocaust here, through a number of different museums, exhibitions, gardens, and memorials.

We finish this journey in the picturesque mountain village of Ein Karem, which is filled with churches, monasteries, and historic homes. It’s an important place of worship, but also a popular weekend getaway for people living in the city.

Journey Through Israel - Travel Documentary

Israel means a lot of different things to many people, and is one of the most diverse and dynamic countries in the world. Even though it’s often associated with political unrest and conflict, it’s also a beautiful place to travel to, with spectacular natural beauty, lively cities, ancient historic sites, incredible cuisine, and friendly, welcoming people.

On this journey, I’m traveling through the Holy Land, a region important to the three main monotheistic religions, and what is known today as Israel and Palestine.

In this episode, I’m exploring Israel, a country that was established in 1948, but is located in a region that has been at the crossroads of religions and cultures for many centuries. From the beautiful beaches and dynamic streets of modern Tel Aviv, to the religious landmarks and atmospheric alleys of the Old City of Jerusalem. From the salty water of the Dead Sea to the surreal desert landscapes of the Negev. Along the way, I meet some of the people that live here, and taste some of the local food.

I’ll do so from a traveler’s perspective, focusing on the positive stories and things to do. But here and there I also mention the conflict between Israel and Palestine, since it has impacted the lives of many people in the region. For those interested in the politics and modern history of the region, however, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

This is my first long trip after the pandemic started, and I’m grateful for the chance to travel again. It’s also my second visit to the region, and therefore I use both new and older footage for this video.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey in Tel Aviv, Israel’s ‘beach city’. But it’s much more than that, it’s also an economic powerhouse and vibrant cultural center, known for its liberal and cosmopolitan attitude. The next stop is Caesarea, an interesting place for people who are interested in history. This ancient port city was an important place during Roman times, and was only recently excavated by archaeologists. Not far from here is Haifa, known particularly for its beautiful Bahai’s gardens.

I continue my travels in Akko, a stunning fortified city on the Mediterranean coast. Its winding alleys are a joy to get lost in, and it’s also worth discovering the underground tunnels. Driving onwards, I travel to the Golan Heights, an area popular for outdoor activities, with beautiful mountain landscapes and national parks. It’s also a contested place, as the Golan was captured by Israel from Syria, after Six Day War. As you travel in this region, you come across many reminders of the war.

Nazareth is one of Christianity’s holiest places, and the place where Jesus is said to have lived for many years. The Basilica of the Annunciation is the absolute highlight for many visitors, and the city is an important place for religious tourism. Also interesting is Nazareth Village, where you can imagine life during the time of Jesus.

Few places evoke so much imagination as Jerusalem, one of the world’s oldest cities, and holy to Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Walking (into) the Old City can be a magical experience, and to many visitors feels like entering a different world, and era. While Jerusalem is a spiritual and historic center, it’s also a dynamic city, where traditional lifestyles blend with cosmopolitan ideas.

We continue our journey in the Negev, a vast region in the South of Israel, comprising of arid mountains and surreal desert landscapes. Here, I visit a number of beautiful nature reserves, and also briefly visit a kibbutz. At the Southern tip of the Negev is Eilat, a popular holiday destination for Israeli families, but also a good place to go diving or snorkeling, as it’s located on the Red Sea.

I end the trip on the Dead Sea, known for its high salt levels, where people actually stay afloat. The high concentration of minerals is also said to have healing powers for people with certain skin problems. It’s not all good news though, as the Dead Sea’s water levels are receding at immense speed, mostly due to human activity, such as extraction for industrial purposes, and climate change.

There are few cities in the world that can compare to Jerusalem in terms of ancient history and religious significance. It’s one of the most fascinating cities in the world, and it’s a city that I’ve wanted to visit my entire life. Finally, along with my friend David ( and Rafram, we explored Jerusalem to discover the food treasures the city has to offer - and let me tell you, you’ll find some incredibly delicious food in Jerusalem!

We started off the Jerusalem food tour by first walking around East Jerusalem and starting with the best plate of hummus I’ve ever had. We then toured around Old Jerusalem, and enjoyed some incredible Palestinian food kebabs cooked by an incredible man who cooked with serious love and passion. Another highlight in Jerusalem was the mutabak, a thin pastry stuffed with cheese and baked.

After eating our way through Old Jerusalem, we then headed into West Jerusalem and went to lunch at an Israeli Jewish restaurant serving a mix of amazing dishes. The food was home-cooked in style, and absolutely sensation. A few more snacks and sightseeing throughout the afternoon, and that brought us all the way to dinner where David had made reservations to eat at one of the hottest restaurants in Jerusalem, Machneyuda Restaurant. It was quite an experience, and an amazing meal and lively atmosphere to wrap up this ultimate Jerusalem food tour.

Here’s all the food and places included in this Palestinian food and Israeli food tour of Jerusalem:

Almond juice - 3.90 ILS ($1.09)

It was a lot of food in a single day, but it was one of the greatest food and learning days that I’ve ever had in my life. The generosity of the people we connected with, paired with the food, was truly a memorable experience in Jerusalem.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered licensed tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water, and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many-faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be implanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

BEN YEHUDA STREET
One of Jerusalem’s prime hangout spots for locals and tourists alike, Ben Yehuda Street is a pedestrian mall extending between King George Street and Jaffa Road in downtown Jerusalem. Commonly referred to as “The Midrechov” (a Hebrew portmanteau merging the words for “street” and “sidewalk”), Ben Yehuda has been closed to motorized traffic since 1983 – a trend that has since extended to several more streets in the surrounding area.

Ben Yehuda Street attracts a constant throng of tourists, who mill about the many gift shops and stop for falafel or ice cream in one of the small eateries lining the street. Entertainment abounds – often impromptu- as Ben Yehuda Street is often dotted with musicians and street performers, and during summer and holiday seasons, the municipality hosts festivals live music festivals.

Tmol Shlishom café
was founded in 1994 in an old 19th-century building. The café is named after Tmol Shilshom, a book by Nobel Prize laureate, S. Y. Agnon, (“Only Yesterday” in English).

Tmol Shilshom is situated in a picturesque alleyway of Nachalat Shiva, one of the first neighborhoods to be built outside the Old City of Jerusalem. The buildings in the neighborhood are built from Jerusalem stone, and the archways and hidden niches make it an intriguing area to explore.

We are more than just a restaurant that takes pride in its culinary excellence. Since our establishment in 1994, Tmol Shilshom has been a cultural institution that hosts the top authors and poets, among them: Yehuda Amichai, Amos Oz, A. B. Yehoshua, David Grossman, Orly Castel-Bloom, Batya Gur, and many more. Young writers, musicians and artists are also often hosted at Tmol Shilshom.

Among other things, Tmol Shilshom is popular as a romantic meeting place. Dates, anniversaries and even marriage proposals happen here on a regular basis. In 2008 we published “The Love Book of Tmol Shilshom” that includes photographs and true stories of some of the couples who met here. We even wrote and regularly produce a humoristic play about romantic dates here.

Lonely Planet named our shakshuka one of the10 best breakfasts in the world.

Tmol Shilshom’s uniquely warm and professional staff make it a perfect place for private events, birthday parties, bar/bat mitzvahs, britot, weddings, parties, meetings and conferences. We’re here to help make dreams come true. There are also options to combine performances, plays and lectures with meals here.

From souvenirs to shoes, meat bistros to frozen yogurt stands, Ben Yehuda Street is a must any Jerusalem visit.
