In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 3 | Exploring Estremoz, Elvas, Mouchão & Marvão | Travel in Portugal
Alentejo in Portugal is a spectacularly vast region that urges anyone with a love for bucolic sceneries and dramatic landscapes to come back over and over again. This time, we headed to Alto Alentejo, this Portuguese hinterland that shares a border with Spain, exploring the deeply historic Estremoz, the garrison town of Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its mighty twin fortresses, and climbed the Serra de São Mamede (on the mountainous district of Portalegre) for the grand finale that is the ancient hilltop town of Marvão.
In between, we encountered two wonderful surprises -- a stay in Monte da Provença, this idyllic and rural farmhouse hotel just outside Elvas, and finally, a visit in Herdade do Mouchão, one of the oldest vineyards in Alentejo, with their heritage Alicante Bouschet wines that have surpassed renown.

A walk by the beautiful and charming city of Estremoz, in the Alentejo region of Portugal. We start out tour at the city's medieval tower, the highest point in town where a famous hotel now sits. Afterwards we start descending towards the city's center, passing by the pelourinho (the traditional city center square) and the church of São Francisco, where we will visit its stunning interior.

Pateo dos Solares Charm Hotel is a romantic 4-star hotel located in the center of Estremoz. It offers a tranquil garden with an outdoor swimming pool. The iconic Estremoz Castle with its tower, Queen Saint Elizabeth's Statue, old prison and various viewpoints is a 5-minute walk away.
The classic rooms at Pateo dos Solares Charm Hotel are decorated in tones of crème and brown. Each includes satellite TV and a mini-bar stocked with refreshments. Some come with fireplaces.
The hotel’s bar has a terrace, which opens onto the garden. Traditional Portuguese cuisine can be enjoyed at the Alentejo à Mesa restaurant, which also offers a choice of Alentejo wines. The hotel has a wellness area with Hammam, Sauna and a massage room.
