Guatemala is a small country (the size of Ohio) in the Central America region. It has borders to Mexico in the north/northwest, to Belize in the northeast, to Honduras in the southeast, to El Salvador in the south. It has a Pacific coastline to the southwest, and a tiny piece of Caribbean coastline to the east.
Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites. The climate in the Central and Western Highlands is generally mild. It can get cool at night even in the summers.
In its territory there are fascinating Mayan archaeological sites (Tikal in the Peten, Quiriguá in Izabal, Iximche in Tecpan Chimaltenango and Guatemala City). Natural attractions include locations such as Lake Atitlan and Semuc Champey. Historical tourism includes the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala, which is recognized as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site.
There is a strong interest within the international community for archaeological sites like the city of Tikal. To note, Tikal was built and inhabited in a period where the culture had its greatest literary and artistic expression, and was ruled by a dynasty of 16 kings. The Maya of Tikal built many temples, a ball park, altars and stelae in high and low relief.
Guatemala is visited for its archaeological sites, pre-Hispanic cities as well as tourist-religious centers like the Basilica of Esquipulas in the city of Esquipulas, and the beaches on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Guatemala. Other tourist destinations are the national parks and other protected areas such as the Maya Biosphere Reserve.

Nuestra Esquipulas te brinda toda la información de la ciudad de Esquipulas ubicada en el municipio de Chiquimula en el país de Guatemala, estamos ubicados en la parte trifinio entre Honduras y El Salvador.
Costumbres y tradiciones
En Esquipulas se encuentra uno de los lugares de peregrinación más descollantes de Mesoamérica, por la advocación al Cristo Negro, que ha generado múltiples leyendas, como por ejemplo de que este Cristo es negro porque está asentado en un cerro encantado de los ancestrales pobladores mayas, que tenían como deidad a un dios de Xibalbá que se pintaba de negro.
Las celebraciones del Señor de Esquipulas en el mes de enero conllevan peregrinaciones, rezos, penitencias, novenarios, cumplimientos de promesas, ofrendas, agradecimientos y exvotos. Sus rituales forman todo un mundo sacro alrededor de su culto.
Debe de insistirse que el arraigo de esta veneración, se conecta directamente con las deidades prehispánicas chortíes, que sincretizadas y redemantizadas por los españoles desde los inicios de la colonización dieron como resultado una tradición maravillosa. Peregrinar a los centros sagrados ha sido una de las constantes de la cultura del guatemalteco desde los tiempos arcaicos. Hilos que tejen la trama de este envoltorio fascinante son las rutas sacras y los caminos que conducen al sacro epicentro de santos, deidades y nahuales. Los hombres que habitan los pueblos que transitan por ellos cargados de candelas, pom, incienso, licor blanco, henchidos de oraciones y oblaciones. Con el alma prendida de misticismo van a buscar a los antepasados en cerros, valles, templos y santuarios.
Las peregrinaciones al templo de Esquipulas, para venerar al Cristo Negro constituyen uno de los movimientos sociales de mayor profusión desde los tiempos prehispánicos hasta nuestros dias, la simbiosis perfecta entre antiguas creencias y la fe cristiana.
Es el sincretismo, el cristianismo animista guatemalteco en todo su esplendor. Las peregrinaciones a Esquipulas flanquean la Historia, desde las profundidades del mito antiguo hasta los rituales contemporáneos. Cambian los templos, pero las esencias de la creencia han permanecido por más de setecientos años, desde 1200 d. de C. hasta nuestros días, sin mayores modificaciones.
La Cueva De Las Minas: Están ubicadas al sur de la ciudad a un costado de la Basílica y a un kilómetro de distancia de la carretera que conduce a Honduras, existen algunos cerros del cual uno de ellos fue perforado en forma de cruz acostada de norte a sur, en las márgenes del Río Chacalapa o de los Milagros.
La Piedra De Los Compadres: Esquipulas tiene tanta historia a cuál más emotiva y simpática, que hasta las piedras tienen su historia, este monumento natural se encuentra al norte de la ciudad y a dos kilómetros de distancia, situado exactamente donde pasa la carretera antigua de terracería que conectaba a Esquipulas con Quezaltepeque y Chiquimula.

The town of Esquipulas in the Chiquimula Department is one of the most significant in Central America. Second only in importance to the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe outside Mexico City is the Basílica of Esquipulas with its Icon of the Black Christ that dates back to 1595. Pilgrims from all over Central America gather here. Esquipulas is also the seat of the Central American Parliament and, given its location just a short distance from the borders with Honduras and El Salvador, it has also been the place where several important peace agreements have been signed. The villages, forests and mountains of Mataquescuintla are home to the Pocomam Indians who produce some outstanding textiles and ceramics.
Church of the Black Christ, Esquipulas, Guatemala ... In 1595, a statue of Christ on the Cross, carved from dark balsam wood, was installed in the church. It is not known specifically why the statue is dark. (Some people assume it is due to the centuries of candle smoke inside the church, but this is not the case. The smoke does not stain the clothing of the statue, and underneath the protective clothing the wooden skin is no less dark.) Most probably the dark color - it is not really black but rather a coffee brown - points to the strong pagan elements that infused and influenced early Colonial Christianity throughout Meso- and Central America. Christian pilgrimages to the church began shortly after 1737 when the Archbishop of Guatemala visited and went away cured of a chronic ailment. Local church authorities, knowing the enormous income statistics of vital European pilgrimage shrines, constructed a new church in 1758.
Situated about a mile from the old church of Santiago, the great white basilica was soon attracting pilgrims from all over Central America. While pilgrims journey to the shrine throughout the year, there are two periods when their numbers multiply greatly. One is for a week up to and culminating on January 15, the other is the week of Easter. During these times, upwards of a hundred thousand pilgrims descend upon the normally quiet mountain valley to adore the Black Christ. Great markets spring up, the hotels are over-filled, and people sleep in the church courtyard and along the city streets. These festivals are said to be the finest displays of native dress in all of Central America.

Costumbres y tradiciones
En Esquipulas se encuentra uno de los lugares de peregrinación más descollantes de Mesoamérica, por la advocación al Cristo Negro, que ha generado múltiples leyendas, como por ejemplo de que este Cristo es negro porque está asentado en un cerro encantado de los ancestrales pobladores mayas, que tenían como deidad a un dios de Xibalbá que se pintaba de negro.
Las celebraciones del Señor de Esquipulas en el mes de enero conllevan peregrinaciones, rezos, penitencias, novenarios, cumplimientos de promesas, ofrendas, agradecimientos y exvotos. Sus rituales forman todo un mundo sacro alrededor de su culto.
Debe de insistirse que el arraigo de esta veneración, se conecta directamente con las deidades prehispánicas chortíes, que sincretizadas y redemantizadas por los españoles desde los inicios de la colonización dieron como resultado una tradición maravillosa. Lugares Sagrados
Peregrinar a los centros sagrados ha sido una de las constantes de la cultura del guatemalteco desde los tiempos arcaicos. Hilos que tejen la trama de este envoltorio fascinante son las rutas sacras y los caminos que conducen al sacro epicentro de santos, deidades y nahuales. Los hombres que habitan los pueblos que transitan por ellos cargados de candelas, pom, incienso, licor blanco, henchidos de oraciones y oblaciones. Con el alma prendida de misticismo van a buscar a los antepasados en cerros, valles, templos y santuarios.
Las peregrinaciones al templo de Esquipulas, para venerar al Cristo Negro constituyen uno de los movimientos sociales de mayor profusión desde los tiempos prehispánicos hasta nuestros dias, la simbiosis perfecta entre antiguas creencias y la fe cristiana.
Es el sincretismo, el cristianismo animista guatemalteco en todo su esplendor. Las peregrinaciones a Esquipulas flanquean la Historia, desde las profundidades del mito antiguo hasta los rituales contemporáneos. Cambian los templos, pero las esencias de la creencia han permanecido por más de setecientos años, desde 1200 d. de C. hasta nuestros días, sin mayores modificaciones.
La Cueva De Las Minas: Están ubicadas al sur de la ciudad a un costado de la Basílica y a un kilómetro de distancia de la carretera que conduce a Honduras, existen algunos cerros del cual uno de ellos fue perforado en forma de cruz acostada de norte a sur, en las márgenes del Río Chacalapa o de los Milagros.
La Piedra De Los Compadres: Esquipulas tiene tanta historia a cuál más emotiva y simpática, que hasta las piedras tienen su historia, este monumento natural se encuentra al norte de la ciudad y a dos kilómetros de distancia, situado exactamente donde pasa la carretera antigua de terracería que conectaba a Esquipulas con Quezaltepeque y Chiquimula.
