The legendary Issyk Lake is located in the mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau, in the Issyk Gorge, about 50 km east of the city of Almaty (Kazakhstan). The name Issyk comes from the Kazakh word Esik - “door, narrow gorge, gorge”.

Lake Issyk also is known as Issyk Lake is a lake in Kazakhstan fed by the Issyk River. It should not be confused with the Issyk-Kul Lake in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
The lake is most famous for the way it was created (as a result of an ancient natural landslide damming a valley), destroyed (another natural landslide destroying that dam in 1963, with a subsequent flood damaging the city of Esik), and re-created (with human help).

From Almaty to Esik - Timelapse - Almaty Region - Kazakhstan - 4K video
Esik - town in the south of Kazakhstan , the district center of the Enbekshikazakh district of the Almaty region .
It is located at the foot of the Zailiysky Alatau ridge along the mountain river Esik (tributary of the Ili ), 53 km east of Alma-Ata , with which it is connected by a road running 12 km from the international highway Alma-Ata - Narynkol , called the Kulzhinsky tract.
The distance from Esik to the high-mountainous lake Esik is about 12 km, to the Kapshagay reservoir on the Ili River is about 50 km.
The modern town was founded in 1854 by the Semirechye Cossacks , and initially had the status of a village called Nadezhdinskaya. In 1923, the name of the village was changed to Issykskaya.
Esik is surrounded by mountain ranges from the east, south and west. Due to the large number of glaciers in the upper reaches of the Esik mountain gorge, the city is a mudflow hazardous zone. As a result of the heat and abundant melting of glaciers , the mudflow on July 7, 1963 claimed about a thousand lives and destroyed about a third of the city.
In 1968, Issyk received the status of a city. Every year on October 8, the Day of the city of Esik is celebrated. The city at the foot of the Tien Shan ranges became famous for the fact that not far from it in April 1970, a team of archaeologists, led by Kemal Akishev , excavated an ancient barrow , where they found the remains of a Saka warrior in a golden cuirass.
On May 4, 1993, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan, the transcription of the name of the city of Issyk in Russian was changed to Esik.
In 2019, the area of the city was increased, 2,548,272 hectares of land were added to the city, in connection with which the total area increased to 4,730,538 hectares .
In the city of Esik, by order of the first President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.A. Nazarbayev, the “Archaeological and Local Lore Museum” was opened. The exposition of the museum is aimed at the surviving Saka burials, traces of ancient cities, as well as rock paintings. Every year, on the territory of the Issyk burials, together with the Kazakh Academy of Sciences. A. Margulan, research excavations are being carried out. The area of the museum building is 227 m², and consists of 4 exhibition halls. The museum fund includes 1090 items of museum significance, 708 - the main fund, 382 - auxiliary.

Issyk Lake, also known as Esik Lake, is a picturesque alpine lake located in the Issyk Gorge of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, about 70 km east of Almaty City, Kazakhstan. It is situated at an altitude of 1760 meters above sea level and is surrounded by dense forests, flower fields, and towering mountains. The lake is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, which change color depending on the weather and the time of day.
Issyk Lake was formed about 10,000 years ago by a massive rock avalanche, which created a natural dam across the Issyk River. In 1963, a mudflow from the upper reaches of the river destroyed the dam and emptied the lake. However, the lake was restored to its former glory in the early 1990s.
Issyk Lake is a popular tourist destination, both for locals and international visitors alike. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Kazakhstan. Visitors can swim, fish, boat, hike, camp, and simply enjoy the stunning scenery.
