Saarbrücken is the capital and largest city of the state of Saarland, Germany. Saarbrücken is Saarland's administrative, commercial and cultural centre. he city is situated next to the French border at the heart of the metropolitan area of Saarland. Saarbrücken was created in 1909 by the merger of three towns, Saarbrücken, St. Johann, and Malstatt-Burbach. It used to be the industrial and transport centre of the Saar coal basin. Products included iron and steel, sugar, beer, pottery, optical instruments, machinery, and construction materials.
Historic landmarks in the city include the stone bridge across the Saar (1546), the Gothic church of St. Arnual, the 18th-century Saarbrücken Castle, and the old part of the town, the Sankt Johanner Markt (Market of St. Johann). Twice in the 20th century Saarbrücken was separated from Germany: in 1920–35 as capital of the Territory of the Saar Basin and in 1947–56 as capital of the Saar Protectorate.
Some of the closest cities are Trier, Luxembourg, Nancy, Metz, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. Saarbrücken is connected by the city's public transport network to the town of Sarreguemines in France, and to the neighboring town of Völklingen, where the old steel works were the first industrial monument to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994 — the Völklinger Hütte. The city is served by Saarbrücken Airport (SCN), and since June 2007 ICE high speed train services along the LGV Est line provide high speed connections to Paris from Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof. Saarbrücken's Saarbahn (modelled on the Karlsruhe model light rail) crosses the French–German border, connecting to the French city of Sarreguemines.

Germany: The City of Saarburg
Saarburg is a city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the banks of the river Saar in the hilly country a few kilometers upstream from the Saar's junction with the Moselle.
Now known as a tourist attraction, the river Leuk flows into the town center and makes a spectacular drop of some 60 feet (about18 m) before joining the larger Saar that bisects the town. The waterfall is the result of a 13th-century project to redirect the Leuk through the city center.
Steep paths and stairs lead from the lower town up to the ruins of the old Saarburg. The castle complex offers impressive views in all directions, especially of the spacious river landscape, the district of Beurig and the old town at the foot of the castle hill.

Saarland had a rich mining industry and that really shows.
Our Destination Challenges took us to the 'Saar Polygon' a monument built to commemorate the region's mining history. ⛰

Saarbrücken (or Saarbrucken 2023) îs the capital of the state Saarland in Germany. Saarbrucken means the bridge over the river Saar in German. The city is located next to the French border. The current city was formed in 1909 with the merger of St. Johann, Saarbrucken and Malstatt-Burbach. Highlights of the city include the old center, the Stonebridge across the river Saar, the Castle, the St. Annual Church and the Sankt Johanner Markt. Saarbrucken has a population of 330,000 and in its metropolitan area live 700,000 citizens.

At the Saar Loop - Germany 4K Travel Channel
The Saar Loop lies in the border triangle, Germany, France, and Luxembourg. A year ago, we met Eithne Treanor on our trip to Tajikistan. Already at that time, we agreed that we wanted to meet again. Eithne is Irish but lives in Dubai. On the way to her homeland, she made a stopover in Luxembourg and visited a friend. A perfect opportunity for meeting us again.
Since she also enjoys traveling, of course, we also want to show her our area. On the way from Luxembourg to our home, we visit the Saar loop near Mettlach.
Actually, it is from Besseringen to Mettlach only 2 km as the crow flies, but the Saar river has to make a detour of almost 10 km through the Taunus quartzite. From a height of 180 m above the river, you have a nice view of almost the whole Saar loop. Until now, the view was only possible from the Cloef-Atrium, a stone terrace.
In 2016, one built a treetop path. The path leads 1250 m through the forest, with the footbridge running up to a height of 23 m. At its end is a 42 m high observation tower with a 70 m² terrace. The path goes up in double bends and has no steps. The observation tower is mainly made of wood. Only the supporting structure is made of steel.
On days of good visibility, you can see the closed coal-fired plant 28 km away in Ensdorf.
We believe that the Saar loop and the treetop path did not only appeal to us, but also to Eithne.

Die Saarschleife liegt im Dreiländereck, Deutschland, Frankreich und Luxemburg.
Vor einen Jahr haben wir Eithne Treanor auf unserer Tadschikistan Reise kennengelernt. Schon damals haben wir vereinbart, dass wir uns wiedersehen wollen. Eithne ist Irin, lebt aber in Dubai. Auf dem Weg in ihre alte Heimat hat sie in Luxemburg einen Zwischenstopp eingelegt und eine Freundin besucht. Somit hat sich auch ein Besuch bei uns angeboten.
Da sie sehr reisefreudig ist, wollen wir ihr natürlich auch unsere Gegend zeigen. Auf dem Weg von Luxemburg zu uns nach Hause besuchen wir die Saarschleife bei Mettlach.
Eigentlich sind es von Besseringen nach Mettlach nur 2 km Luftlinie, doch die Saar ist gezwungen einen Umweg von fast 10 km durch den Taunusquarzit zu machen. Aus 180 m Höhe über dem Fluss hat man eine herrlichen Blick auf nahezu die gesamte Schleife. Bislang war der Ausblick nur vom Cloef-Atrium, einer Steinterrasse, aus möglich.
2016 wurde ein Baumwipfelpfad errichtet. Der Pfad führt 1250 m weit durch den Wald, wobei der Steg in einer Höhe von bis zu 23 m verläuft. An seinem Ende wurde ein 42 m hoher Aussichtsturm mit einer 70 m² großen Terrasse errichtet. Der Weg führt in Serpentinen hinauf und hat keine Stufen. Der Aussichtsturm besteht überwiegend aus Holz. Nur das tragende Gerüst ist aus Stahl.
Bei guter Sicht kann man das stillgelegte Kohlekraftwerk Ensdorf in 28 km Entfernung erkennen.
Wir glauben, dass die Saarschleife und der Baumwipfelpfad nicht nur uns, sondern auch Eithne sehr gut gefallen hat.

Tholey is a municipality in the district of Sankt Wendel, in Saarland, Germany. It is situated approximately 10 kilometres west of Sankt Wendel, and 30 kilometres north of Saarbrücken.
The church and monastery in Tholey have been named after Saint Mauritius since the 10th century. He lived at the end of the 3rd century, came from North Africa, probably from Egypt, and was an officer in the Roman army. Its history is uncertain. It is essentially based on records by the Lyon bishop Eucherius, who died around 450. The military unit he commanded was named the Theban Legion, after the former Egyptian pharaonic city of Thebes. Mauritius and his soldiers were Christians. When Mauritius crossed the Alps with his legion and advanced into what is now the Swiss canton of Valais, he was asked the secondary emperor Maximian, who was responsible for the western part of the Roman Empire, to fight against Christian developments and efforts in his army. When Mauritius refused to obey this order, the emperor had every tenth soldier in the legion executed. This was a method of punishment more commonly used by the Roman military. The Latin word for ten is decem. This is where the word decimate comes from.

Meine ersten Impressionen von der saarländischen Landeshauptstadt? ✔ Ich finde, Saarbrücken hat viel weniger touristische Power als Hochburgen wie Berlin, München oder Heidelberg. Logisch ist auch, dass die „Saarstadt“ mit weniger als 200.000 Einwohnern nicht mit der einen oder anderen deutschen Metropole „mithalten“ kann. Trotzdem kann ich in Saarbrücken genug Sehenswürdigkeiten finden, um einen Wochenend-Städtetrip zu füllen. ✔ Um an dieser Stelle ein paar wenige zu nennen: eine Führung durch den Saarbrücker Rathausturm, das Saarbrücker Schloss und die unterirdischen „Höhlengänge“. Auf unseren Rundgang durch Saarbrücken schauen wir uns u.a. das Rathaus St. Johann mit Phönixbrunnen, die Basilika St. Johann, das Saarländische Staatstheater, das Schloss Saarbrücken und die Ludwigskirche in Alt-Saarbrücken an. Bei der von Martin Gropius entworfenen Bergwerksdirektion endet unser Besuch in der Universitätsstadt an der Saar.

Bei unserem Besuch in Saarlouis (rund 35.000 Einwohner, Saarland) stehen die Festungsanlagen im Vordergrund. Daneben schauen wir uns u.a. noch das Rathaus, die Ludwigskirche, das Theater am Ring, den Stadtgarten und die Ludwig Galerie an.

Völklingen Ironworks - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of the former ironworks at Volklingen was the largest steel and iron-making facility of its type in the world. Bringing together all stages of the manufacturing process, combined with several innovative technological solutions meant that the ironworks had an incredible output. Unfortunately, it closed in 1986 due to economic conditions, and the local government decided it was too expensive to demolish, so it was just left to rot in place. There's some great nature trails through areas of the facility where trees, grass and other plants are taking over, and it has a wonderful post-apocalyptic feel. I loved this site, very interesting and exciting!

Saar Polygon ⚒️ ein Wahrzeichen des Saarlandes mit Absprung eines Drachenfliegers ????
Bei traumhaft schönem Wetter haben wir das Saarpolygon in Ensdorf ( Saarland ) besucht ,wir waren sehr beeindruckt von der mächtigen Bergenhalde und dem Saarpolygon das sein aussehen je nach Standort ändert . Das Saarpolygon wurde 2016 erbaut als Erinnerung an die über 250 jährige Saarländische Bergbaugeschichte. Gekrönt wurde unser Besuch auf der Halde Duhamel mit den Drachenfliegern die die Halde als Absprungrampe für ihre Flüge benutzen. Zum abschluß besuchten wir noch die Freilichtbühne in Hülzweiler wo wir die Tour mit gegrillten Würstchen und einer guten Tasse Kaffee ausklingen ließen .
