A video where I talk about the Hurstbridge line for 40 minutes!

Melbourne's Hurstbridge line is a 38km suburban railway line, running from the city out to the scenic Diamond Valley in the north-east suburbs. The line is 1600mm Broad Gauge and electrified at 1500v DC. In the video I talk through the line's many interesting features from the city out to the terminus. All photographs and video are taken by Martin Bennet (that's me), I also do the writing, narration, and diagrams. The only content in this video not made by me are a couple of scans from the 1927 Victorian Railways 'Curves and Grades' book, one from the 1945 VR passenger network map, and the google maps screenshots.

At the end of the video I mention you can travel on this line by steam train during the Hurstbridge Wattle Festival, usually in August or September. You can check here for details of the next one:

For a full length diagram on the line and more details on historical dates etc, visit the Vicsig line guide page here:

Public Transport Fares In Victoria // The Free Tram Zone

This video explains the logic behind public transport fares in Melbourne, and more broadly across the whole state of Victoria: How the fares are calculated, why some journeys are much better value than others, and what incentives exist to encourage travel at certain times. Also, the Free Tram Zone, and why most experts agree it isn't actually a good idea. Please note this video isn't meant to be a resource about how much specific fares cost, just the logic of why certain trips are charged in certain ways, and fares have changed since this video was made. The horrifying case of Mr. Blobby ????

Eltham Trestle Bridge Flexing Under Trains

The wooden railway trestle bridge over the Diamond Creek at Eltham in Melbourne's north-eastern suburbs is a remarkable survivor into the 21st century. It began carrying trains in 1902, and to this day carries frequent electric suburban trains operating on the Hurstbridge line. Although built in 1902 the bridge contains no original parts that I am aware of, with the timber being progressively replaced throughout its life. This video shows the natural bending and flexing that happens when a train passes over the bridge, filmed from ground level immediately under the deck at the far Down end of the bridge. The first train is a Comeng, the second an X'trapolis. Each six car train is made up of four motor (M ) cars and two trailer (T) cars. Comeng M cars weigh about 50 tonnes, while the X'trap M cars are slightly lighter at around 43 tonnes. The trailer cars of both types weigh in at around 35t. All cars have a pair of two-axle bogies, so the weight on each axle is a quarter of the car weight. A full bogie fits on one span of this bridge, so it's possible to have around 25t on a single span. The footage in this video is a small part of a longer video I made taking an in-depth look at this bridge, you can view it here:

Filmed March 2011.

Grain Train in the Suburbs - The Kensington Shunt!

The Kensington flour mill is one of the last rail-served industries in the Melbourne suburban area, and the only one that involves shunting in full public view alongside a busy suburban line. The train is operated by Southern Shorthaul Railroad (SSR), using a mixture of ancient EMD diesel locomotives of the S, B, P and T class.

Skitube: Australia's Amazing Alpine Railway!

Skitube is a fascinating alpine rack railway, located in the Snowy Mountains of southern New South Wales, and providing access to the ski fields at Perisher Valley and Blue Cow in the Kosciuszko National Park. It's 1435mm Standard Gauge, and electrified at 1500v DC using overhead wires. The trains are a really unusual design, and the railway has several features which are not seen anywhere else in Australia, and in some cases - the world. As usual, this video is illustrated entirely with my own photos and videos. The Skitube photos were all taken on a single day in the winter of 2011.

The railway takes a lot of design influence from Switzerland, and you will see several bits of footage of Swiss trains throughout the video. You can find the full versions of all those videos here:
If you like hearing me bang on about transport, check out more videos here:

While researching this video, I found there isn't actually that much information on the internet about this obscure railway. It has however been extensively written about in several books:
-Rack railways of Australia by David Jehan
-Railway Electrification in Australia and New Zealand by Geoffrey B Churchman
-A History of Commonwealth Engineering (Comeng) Volume 5 1985-1990 By John Dunn
Some of these books are easier to find than others, but David Jehan's book is probably the best general account, and many places still sell it.
