Wij zijn Pieter en Marieke en sinds 2015 varen we met onze motorboot de Canicula door Nederland. Tijdens onze eerste vaartocht door Overijssel vallen we van de ene verbazing in de andere. Over de imposante bebouwing van Vollenhove, de massieve zeesluis van Blokzijl, het dijkdorp Kuinre. Geweldig! Inmiddels zijn we bijna heel Nederland door gevaren. Om iedereen te laten zien hoe mooi Nederland is vanaf het water, maken we video's van onze vaartochten en schrijven we artikelen over wat we allemaal tegenkomen onderweg. De Canicula is een St. Tropez cabincruiser van negen meter lang, tachtig centimeter diep en ruim twee meter hoog.

Castle Tour in the Netherlands
Castle De Haar
To visit De Haar Castle, whether to admire its park, its rich history, the exhibitions, gardens, deer or for a wedding, is to be immersed in a different world. Behind every door, every detail, every flower in its colorful gardens is a story. A story about earlier times, different cultures and interesting characters. De Haar is the largest castle in the Netherlands, once the private residence of the Van Zuylen family, whose descendants still stay here yearly. In the last century, the castle also frequently hosted members of the international jet-set with their lavish lifestyle; from Coco Chanel to Roger Moore, they too left their mark on the sumptuous rooms of the most opulent spot in Utrecht.
Few castles in The Netherlands can equal De Haar for its ideal image of a medieval fortress with towers and ramparts, moats, gates and drawbridges. Like a real fairy-tale castle, it rises majestically from parkland with impressive trees, old gardens, and ponds. The castle is situated in the center of The Netherlands, near Utrecht, and is easy to reach by car. There is ample parking space.
De Haar Castle ranks among the top twenty most visited Dutch museums. It is a historic monument alive with year-round activities such as guided tours (for adults and children), exhibitions, theatre, and events. De Haar Castle is a private foundation and does not receive any regular subsidies from local or central government. The foundation is a non-profit organization and depends entirely on its revenues from ticket sales, activities and events.
For over a century it has been a tradition for the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar family to reside in the castle for one month a year, in September. The tradition centers around entertaining prominent international guests at lavish house parties hosted by the baron and baroness. Famous guests included Coco Chanel, Maria Callas, Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, Yves Saint Laurent, Joan Collins, and Brigitte Bardot.
The medieval House De Haar dates from the 13th century. It fell into disrepair in the 18th and 19th centuries. Architect Pierre Cuypers (famous for his designs of the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station in Amsterdam) restored and rebuilt De Haar for baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar. The rebuilding took from 1892 till 1912 and was a project unique of its kind in all of Europe.
Cuypers’ grand design included not just the architecture of the castle but also the interiors, the gardens, the chapel and even the village of Haarzuilens. Without exaggeration, the whole can be described as a Gesamtkunstwerk. Cuypers has created a unique, special world: an enchanting oasis of harmony and peace.
The park and gardens surrounding De Haar Castle – covering over 135 acres of land – are worth paying a visit. The Rose Garden, the Roman Garden, the ponds and canals, as well as the many bridges, romantic vistas, and impressive avenues invite visitors to go on long walks or have a picnic. Each season in the park has its charm.

Why is roaming so (damn) expensive? Telecom providers work out bilateral agreements to allow their customers to use each other’s networks. Your phone carrier pays the roaming carrier the agreed fee to enable you to use their network. There are no limits to how high these fees can be, which results in these high costs being passed onto you.

Beautiful South Limburg (NL) in the 1920s in color! [A.I. enhanced & colorized]
This film contains wonderful footage of the Dutch province of Limburg over a century ago between approximately 1919 and 1921.
Limburg is the most hilly southern part of The Netherlands with the Vaalserberg being the highest in the country at 322 meters above sea level.
Many tourist flock to Limburg for its great landscapes consiting of meandering small rivers, hillsides, meadows, cloisters, churches and abbeys, and other great vistas. The Margraten American WW-II cemetary is another well-visited location.
The film ends with footage of the 'mergel' (limestone) quaries at the 171 meters high Sint Pietersberg that until very recent still was being used to produced cement. In this film many parts of this scenery were still in tact whereas nowadays only about [30%*] remains. After years of protest the ENCI company stopped in 2018 with exploiting these natural resources.

Bezienswaardigheden in Midden Limburg | VVV Midden-Limburg
Midden-Limburg heeft een zeer rijk cultureel erfgoed. In de gehele regio liggen mooie molens en goed onderhouden kastelen, burchten en landhuizen. Het katholieke zuiden is bovendien rijk bedeeld met mooie kerken, basilieken, kathedralen en vele unieke kapellen en wegkruisen. De grote diversiteit aan monumenten en industrieel erfgoed, zijn allen een bezoek waard.

Deze route voert je door het prachtige gebied net buiten Ubachsberg. Je hebt er prachtige uitzichten over de uitgestrekte velden. De route gaat richting Colmont, een echt Limburgs gehucht. De route is te volgen via de blauwe paaltjes. Parkeren kan in het centrum van Ubachsberg.

The site, which is strikingly situated in the flat land, was created from 1942. At that time, a piece of agricultural land was expropriated by the occupying forces in order to erect bunkers that were part of the Atlantic Wall. The bunkers in this German Stützpunkt were built in two periods. The first period was that of the pre-Atlantic Wall. In this period, many verstärkt feldmässige Ausbau (v.f.) bunkers were built in coastal areas of which two in Stp. Groede from that early period.
Then followed the Ständiger Ausbau (St.) In this Ständiger Ausbau, each type of bunker had its own number and extensive construction plan. Of this type of bunkers, nine were built in Stp. Groede. The construction numbers that can be read at the entrances of some bunkers were changed during the war years. This renumbering also happened to the bunkers in Breskens. One of the type 134 S (Sanitätsunterstand) bunkers in Stp. Groede with the name Moselland is a modified version and the only bunker built in this way in Zeeland. The continuous corridor is 40 cm. wider and the entrances to the rooms are flattened. This adaptation made it possible to enter the bunker with a stretcher. Groede was also a Red Cross village. The two casemates of type 669 were built at the end of 1943.
The entire bunker village consisted of about eleven bunkers, grouped together as if it were a small village, complete with streets and lawns. The bunkers were camouflaged as houses and were given names like Villa Saarland and Villa Freundlich. However, it was not a friendly place, as there was a considerable amount of artillery installed. The bunker complex belonged to the 3rd battery of the Artillerie Abteilung 642 and was equipped at last with four 10.5 cm K 35 (t) guns with a range of over 18 km and four mortar positions. A regional headquarters was located in Groede.
On October 25, 1944, the bunker village fell into the hands of the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade who initially were under the delusion that they had taken a hamlet.
The Zeeuwse Kust Bunker was one of these bunkers, type 669, this construction was started in the last phase of the bunker construction within the support point Groede. This final phase consisted of placing as much artillery as possible under concrete.
Type 669 was preferably built within positions where there were already men and ammunition bunkers, so this bunker could easily be set up with a gun room and the ammunition niches behind it. In this bunker, a piece of artillery could occupy a bombproof firing position. Because of the large gun opening, the artillery had a 60 degree field of fire and could be driven out through the 2.50 meter wide entrance where it had a 360 degree field of fire.
The ammunition niches were divided into cardboard and grenade niches. The maximum supply was about 200 cardoos or grenades. Two of these type of bunkers were built within the Groede support point.

Camper Travel - Campertrip naar het Friese Appelscha met zon, bos en heide.
Een korte route naar Appelscha is voldoende om een fantastisch weekend te hebben in voorjaarssferen. We zaten op een kleine camping (Wilhelminahoeve) in Elsloo (Friesland) recht tegenover Aekingerzand (Kale Duinen) en het Canadameer erachter.
