Kalmykia Russia/ Europe's only Buddhist region
Kalmykia is located in southwest Russia. The Kalmyk nomads, a Mongol subgroup, came here about 400 years ago. They brought their Tibetan Buddhist faith with them from Asia.
The republic was dissolved in 1943 under the reign of Stalin, spiritual leaders were persecuted, and the temples were destroyed.
The entire Kalmyk people were deported to Siberia and only allowed to return to the region after the end of Stalinism. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990, Buddhism has flourished again in Kalmykia. There are now Buddhist temples, pagodas and religious statues, especially in the capital city of Elista.

???????? Just over 400 years ago a tribe left their homeland in western Mongolia and made their way to Europe. They settled on the windy steppe lands of southern Russia and continued their way of life. I went in search of them and discovered a Buddhist republic living in the heart of Europe. Oh and it is VERY windy there.

400 years ago the descendants of Mongolian Oirats (The Kalmyks) migrated to Europe. They created the Kalmyk Khanate from 1635 to 1779 in the south of the European part of Russia territory. Today they form a majority in Kalmykia, located in the Kalmyk Steppe, on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. They are the only traditionally Buddhist people who are located within Europe.

Volgograd (Stalingrad), Russia, is a city with an Incredible history. The city is famous around the world under its former name, Stalingrad. Stalingrad, was home to the bloodiest battle of World War 2 and one of the most tragic in history. The events of Stalingrad changed the course of the entire war and he victory at Stalingrad energised the Red Army and shifted the balance of power in the favour of the Soviets. However, with over 2 million deaths, the events the took place in and around this city left a scar on the World.
Modern day Volgograd is a lovely city and a wonderful example of Soviet (post-ww2) city planning. We spent 2 days exploring this beautiful city in the heart of European Russia.
