We took a trip to Elena in the stara Planina Mountain Range in Bulgaria, we decided not to stay in the centre of Elena. We instead were very lucky to find this Mountain Guesthouse in a village nearby.

Haskovo is home to the world's largest monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monument was included in the Guinness Book of Records with a height of 31 meters (14 meters in height and 17 meters at the base). Due to its record size and suitable location, the statue can be seen from anywhere in the city, even at night. There is a small chapel built on a pedestal below, to which Christian pilgrims make procession from the Church of the Holy Virgin.
In the city historical museum you will learn about local customs, life and traditions of the local population. Permanent exhibitions here: “Archaeology”, “Ethnography”, “The Age of the Bulgarian National Revival and the National Liberation Struggle”, “City Life - 19th Century”, “Home Crafts - Until the End of the 19th Century”.
The central streets of the city are well lit, with numerous shops, cafes, and nightclubs. The city also has many Bulgarian-style restaurants serving traditional Bulgarian and local cuisine.
Haskovo has a rich cultural tradition. At the end of April, traditional literary days “Yuzhna Prolet” (Southern Spring) are held here. At the end of May, the folk art festival “Beautiful Thrace Sings and Dances” is held in Kenan Park. At the end of September a jazz festival is held in Haskovo.

Sredets (Bulgarian: Средец [srɛˈdɛt͡s]) is a town in Burgas Province in southeastern Bulgaria. It is located near Lake Mandrensko and the northern slopes of Strandzha. Sredets is the administrative centre of Sredets Municipality.
Sredets Point on Smith Island, Antarctica is named after the town.
The Roman fortress of Kaleto, located 2 km southwest of Sredets, was constructed at the end of the fifth and beginning of sixth century AD. Under the First Bulgarian Empire, the fortress became known as Potamukastel (Bulgarian: Потамукастел). Potamukastel was destroyed in the 11th century, but later rebuilt in the 12th century AD. The fortress was abandoned during Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, and the population of Potamukastel resettled at the location of the modern town and founded the village of Karabunar (Bulgarian: Карабунар) (black well in Turkish).
Karabunar is first mentioned in 1595, and is later found in Ottoman tax registers from 1676–1731. King Charles XII of Sweden is known to have stayed overnight in the village in 1713 en route to Constantinople and St. Sophronius of Vratsa worked as a teacher in Karabunar in 1792–1793. Russian Army data from 1827 mentions it as a purely Bulgarian village and it was visited by Vasil Levski in 1868. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, the area was occupied by the Russian 93rd Irkutsk Infantry Regiment on 16 February 1878. Karabunar became part of the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia after the war and was annexed by the Principality of Bulgaria in 1885.
The village was renamed Sredets on 14 August 1934. Under Communist rule, the village was renamed Grudovo on 1 June 1950 in honour of Todor Grudov, a leader of the Communist September Uprising of 1923 and former mayor of the village. Grudovo was granted the status of town on 6 February 1960 and, following the fall of Communism in Bulgaria, on 23 January 1993, the town was renamed Sredets.

Dimitrovgrad new city on the banks of the Maritsa River
Dimitrovgrad is new city on the banks of the Maritsa River, built in the 1940's and named after the then Prime Minister, Georgi Dimitrov. It is a very pleasant city with wide, tree-lined streets, many parks and impressive apartment blocks. It also has a large open market and modern supermarkets too.

Bulgaria is a culturally rich country with some of the easiest going friendly and hospitable people I have met. The locals opened their homes to me where we shared delicious meals together. I joined in on their annual grape picking day, learned to gut a fish and tasted Rakia for the first time. Kirilovo is a rural village where people live off the land, make their own wine and slaughter their own livestock. Most people have chickens to lay eggs and they pickle veg for the winter. It has been an experience I will remember forever.

Crossing Bulgaria to Hamzabeyli ????????
The day of the departure has come. Finally!
This time I didn't leave early in the morning, but very easily. Around 12 I was in Romania - Bulgaria customs.
We pass this customs easily and proceed to Turkey.
The chosen route was the shortest, according to Google Maps, through Razgrad - Yambol - Elhovo - Hamzabeyli
And, to make sure that Garmin doesn't take us evrywhere, I chose some gps coordinates from the Google Maps route and went from coordinate to coordinate.
The road is quite good, but I also encountered sections with a dirt road that will be paved.
Very light traffic throughout Bulgaria. No congestions, no road accidents.
We made our first stop in Targovishte, at a gas station that had a small restaurant in the back. We stopped to hydrate and eat something.
Then we stopped to take a picture, we found the mountain interesting.
I arrived at Hamzabeyli customs shortly after 6 p.m.
