Welcome to EL JEM!! We spent 2 days trying to get here and it was so worth it. The first day was pretty much a travel disaster, the train was cancelled, then we were sent to the wrong louage station...finally got to the 3rd and final louage station, and the bus was a fully booked...eventually we just gave up and came back the next day, luckily it was successful, we made it to El Jem and honestly had a great day exploring!

Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia, a country in North Africa.
It is located on the Mediterranean Sea's Gulf of Tunis, behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette.

Sousse is a city in Tunisia, capital of the Sousse Governorate.
Located 140 km (87 mi) south of the capital Tunis, the city has 271,428 inhabitants (2014). Sousse is in the central-east of the country, on the Gulf of Hammamet, which is a part of the Mediterranean Sea. Its economy is based on transport equipment, processed food, olive oil, textiles, and tourism.

Bulla Regia ruins
Tunisia has no shortage of Roman ruins, but Bulla Regia near Tabarka is the country's most interesting and intriguing site.
Here, the Roman inhabitants coped with the harsh summer climate by ingeniously building their villas underground, which has left the city houses incredibly well preserved today.
Kairouan
With mosques, madrassas, and tombs aplenty, Kairouan has more than its fair share of monuments as the fourth most important city for those of the Muslim faith.
The Arabic architecture here is truly inspiring, and the skyline is full of skinny minarets and bulky domes. But it's probably the back alleys of the city's medina that steal the show.
With narrow, maze-like lanes lined with crumbling colorful houses, Kairouan's old town has an enchanting, lost-in-time atmosphere that is a true highlight of a visit here.
For history lovers, this is a unique opportunity to walk through actual Roman houses, with their walls still intact, and with some of the expansive floor mosaics still in-situ. It's a glimpse of the residential life of the ancient world that you often don't see.
medina in Sousse
Overlooked by the mighty fortifications of the ribat and kasbah, the medina in Sousse just begs to be explored.
This lovely old town district is a warren of looping lanes, rimmed by whitewashed houses, and a shopping paradise with a tempting selection of ceramics, leatherwork, and metalwork on display.
Chott el Djerid
This sprawling salt pan (most easily reached on a day trip from the desert town of Tozeur) is a desolate and otherworldly scene that wows all who visit with its stark and brutal beauty.
The scenery here depends on the season you visit.
In summer, the moonscape surroundings of the Chott el Djerid are a storybook panorama brought to life, filled with shimmering mirages on the horizon and jigsaw puzzle pieces of blindingly white, cracked land under foot.
During winter, though, the basin partially fills with water, creating a bizarre lake amid the desolate surrounding desert plains.
Hammamet
Hammamet is all about the beach. This laid-back town on the Cap Bon Peninsula is Tunisia's top sun-and-sea resort, dedicated to easygoing beach vacations.
The town itself, with its pretty white buildings set beside a bright blue sea, has bundles of Mediterranean charm, which woos all who come to sunbathe on the soft, white sand.
For many who come here, off-the-beach pursuits total up to nothing more strenuous than gentle strolls in the medina (old town) and a spot of shopping in the restored old town souks.
Roman ruins at Dougga
Easily reached on a day trip from both the Tunisian capital of Tunis and the northern beach town of Tabarka, Dougga is one of the most important Roman sites in North Africa.
The site is feted by travelers both for the well-preserved state of its main monuments and its tranquil rural setting amid rolling countryside.
It may seem far off the main routes today, but this expansive, hilltop site was once a thriving town, first settled in the 6th century BCE and today containing remnants leftover from all its major historical eras, from Berber and Punic to Roman and Byzantine.
Tunis medina
Although Tunisia's capital is mostly visited to view the two major tourist attractions of Carthage and the Bardo Museum, the medina district of central Tunis is well worth spending an extra night in the city for.
The winding alleys of this old town neighborhood, with their souks (shopping streets), mosques, and monuments, are fun to explore.
Traditional architecture in Tozeur medina
Tozeur is a desert oasis town, sitting in the country's southeast. For many visitors, it's a practical base for the tourist attractions of the Sahara with the chott el djerid salt pans, sand dune vistas, and the oases of Tamerza and Chebika all within day-tripping distance from town.
Matmata traditional house
This Berber village, with its troglodyte housing, was made famous when one of the dwellings (the Hotel Sidi Driss) was used as a location during the filming of the original Star Wars movie.
Ribat of Monastir
One of Tunisia's most recognizable monuments, the Ribat of Monastir was the earliest fortress built in Tunisia during the 8th-century Abbasid conquest, and one of the earliest in the entirety of North Africa.
Sufetula ruins
The Roman ruins of Sufetula in the small town of Sbeitla are too out of the way to attract the tourist crowds, but it's well worth making the journey.
Known for its exceptionally well-preserved Roman Forum building, as well as a large number of preserved Roman-era public buildings, including a triumphal arch, public bath, and temples, Sufetula is one of the best places to visit in Tunisia to imagine the Roman world.

Impossibly cute, and amazingly photogenic, Sidi Bou Said is a clifftop village of petite dimensions that seem to have fallen off an artist's canvas.
Unsurprisingly, artists have feted this little hamlet, now a high-class suburb of the capital Tunis, for decades.
The whitewashed alleyways, wrought-iron window frames, and colorful blue doors are Tunisian village architecture at their finest, while the Mediterranean backdrop is the cherry on top.
This is a place to while away a lazy afternoon, simply soaking up the laid-back atmosphere and maybe indulging in a spot of shopping at one of the many local artisan and handicraft stalls.
- Grand Erg Oriental
Tunisia's vast Sahara covers much of the country's interior, and the most beautiful corner of the desert is the field of sand dunes known as the Grand Erg Oriental.
These poetically beautiful dunes are a surreal and gorgeous landscape of huge waves, shaped by the ever-shifting desert sands.
For many visitors, this is an adventure playground for riding dune buggies and camel treks, but nothing tops the simple pleasure of sitting atop one of these mammoth sand mountains and watching the sun set over the Sahara.
The nearest center is the desert town of Douz, from where you can organize camel, hiking, and 4WD excursions and multi-day trips to the dunes.

About El Jem: El Djem or El Jem (Tunisian Arabic: الجمّ) is a town in Mahdia Governorate, Tunisia. Its population was 21,576 during the 2014 census. It is home to some of the most impressive Roman remains in Africa, particularly the world-famous Amphitheater of El Jem. // The Amphitheatre of El Jem is an oval amphitheatre in the modern-day city of El Djem, Tunisia, formerly Thysdrus in the Roman province of Africa. It is listed by UNESCO since 1979 as a World Heritage Site. The amphitheatre was built around 238 AD in Thysdrus, located in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis in present-day El Djem, Tunisia. It is one of the best preserved Roman stone ruins in the world, and is unique in Africa. As other amphitheatres in the Roman Empire, it was built for spectator events, and it is one of the biggest amphitheatres in the world. The estimated capacity is 35,000, and the sizes of the big and the small axes are respectively 148 metres (486 ft) and 122 metres (400 ft). The amphitheatre is built of stone blocks, located on a flat ground, and is exceptionally well conserved. The amphitheatre of El Jem is the third amphitheatre built on the same place. The belief is that it was constructed by the local proconsul Gordian, who became the emperor as Gordian III. In the Middle Ages, it served as a fortress, and the population sought shelter here during the attacks of Vandals in 430 and Arabs in 647. In 1695, during the Revolutions of Tunis, Mohamed Bey El Mouradi made an opening in one of the walls to stop the resistance of the followers of his brother Ali Bey al-Muradi who gathered inside the amphitheater. It is believed that the amphiteatre was used as a saltpetre manufacture in the end of the 18th and in the 19th century. Around 1850, the breach in the wall was enlarged by Ahmad I ibn Mustafa to approximately 30 metres (98 ft). Join us on an Adventure to El Jems magnificent Amphitheatre.
The Amphitheatre of El Jem is an oval amphitheatre in the modern-day city of El Djem, Tunisia, formerly Thysdrus in the Roman province of Africa. It is listed by UNESCO since 1979 as a World Heritage Site.
The amphitheatre was built around 238 AD in Thysdrus, located in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis in present-day El Djem, Tunisia. It is one of the best preserved Roman stone ruins in the world, and is unique in Africa. As other amphitheatres in the Roman Empire, it was built for spectator events, and it is one of the biggest amphitheatres in the world. The estimated capacity is 35,000, and the sizes of the big and the small axes are respectively 148 metres and 122 metres. The amphitheatre is built of stone blocks, located on a flat ground, and is exceptionally well conserved.
The amphitheatre of El Jem is the third amphitheatre built on the same place. The belief is that it was constructed by the local proconsul Gordian, who became emperor as Gordian III. In the Middle Ages, it served as a fortress, and the population sought shelter here during the attacks of Vandals in 430 and Arabs in 647. In 1695, during the Revolutions of Tunis, Mohamed Bey El Mouradi made an opening in one of the walls to stop the resistance of the followers of his brother Ali Bey al-Muradi who gathered inside the amphitheater.
It is believed that the amphitheatre was used as a saltpetre manufacture in the end of the 18th and in the 19th century. Around 1850, the breach in the wall was enlarged by Ahmad I ibn Mustafa to approximately 30 metres. In the second half of the 19th century, the structure was used for shops, dwellings, and grain storage.

Filmed in January 2023, my first time visiting this beautiful country.
In this video we catch a train from Sousse to El Jem. This journey took around an hour and was very cheap. El Jem has a Roman Colosseum, which is the best preserved one outside of Rome. This was an amazing experience and was well worth the trip.
No music is used in the videos all sounds are produced by voice and vocals

EL JEM TUNISIA The magnificent Roman Colosseum of Tunisia | Why you should visit Sousse!
Welcome back to our vlog of Tunisia where we continue our journey to the slightly eastern part of the country.
Taking a train from Tunis we made our way to the magnificent and historic El Jem, the third largest colossuem of the Roman period, tried out some Tunisian fast food, took the famous louage and finally reached Sousse. We explored the Sousse medina, interacted with locals and enjoyed our stay in this beautiful city of Tunisia.

Tunisian Dinar is a closed currency which means you cannot bring in or take out any TND cash to/from Tunisia.
1 TND = 1000 millims and you need to carry enough coins.
As of Sep 2023, the bank notes mostly used are of 5, 10, 20, and 50 denominations and the coin denominations are 1,2 and 5 TND and 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 milims.

Tunisia Visa for Indian Passports in Sep 2023 :
As of Sep 2023, Indian passport holders need pre-arranged visas to Tunisia from an overseas Tunisian consulate. We applied from the consulate of Tunisia in Nice, France and the process was time consuming.
Visa Fees: 75 Euros each (cash only)
Documents submitted: Passport copy, Residence Proof in France, Filled in and signed Application Form, Photograph, Hotel Bookings (Booked on Booking.com, having accommodation proof is mandatory for Tunisia tourist visa) and round trip flight tickets
20th July 2023: Submitted application, paid visa fees, they did not keep the passport with them.
12th Aug 2023: Went to the consulate for a follow up on the visa processing, they told us our file reached the Tunisian Ministry on 26th July, decision was still pending.
25th Aug 2023: Got a call from the consulate that the visa has been approved and to come with our passports.
25th Aug 2023 (same day): Went to the consulate and got the visa stamp.
The entire process was pretty straight forward and simple, the hardest part being the wait from 20th July to 25th Aug. Normal processing time for Tunisia visa here is around 3-4 weeks.
