Escape to Jalisco, Mexico -- June 2020
While the covid pandemic was raging in Europe and the US, a sleepy pueblo in Mexico had barely heard of it. Fortunately, I have wonderful amigos in El Limón, Jalisco, Mexico and they were happy to invite me to stay with them for 2-1/2 months. It was such a nice break from isolation in the US -- walking to the spring-fed swimming pool, hiking to waterfalls in the mountains, biking to other sleepy pueblos.

Continuing my journey with a drive to Cuidad Guzman Mexico, in the state of Jalisco. I want to take you with me…. We will look at the things we see on the way. We will look at the lake where a part of the Pan American games was held in 2011. This new destination is surrounded by mountains. This was my home for for 10 months when I first arrived in Mexico. It is 77 miles from Guadalajara and is more amazing than I could portray.

In 2020 I spent about 2-1/2 months in a small town called El Limón in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. In all that time, I never saw another white person like me. In a way it was nice to be the only foreigner.
Then one day, after a long uphill hike to the waterfall of San Lorenzo I met two sisters and their brother. I thought for sure they were tourists like myself. But when I spoke to them I realized that they spoke Spanish and only a little English.
Eventually, their parents arrived at the falls. They looked slightly more Mexican than their kids, probably because of how they dressed. The family admitted that they are often mistaken for Americans.
En 2020 pasé alrededor de 2.5 meses en un pequeño pueblo llamado El Limón en el estado de Jalisco, México. En todo ese tiempo, nunca vi a otra persona blanca como yo. En cierto modo, era agradable ser el único extranjero.
Entonces, un día, después de una larga caminata cuesta arriba hasta la cascada de San Lorenzo, conocí a dos hermanas y su hermano. Pensé con certeza que eran turistas como yo. Pero cuando les hablé me di cuenta de que hablaban español y solo un poco de inglés.
Finalmente, sus padres llegaron a las cataratas. Parecían un poco más mexicanos que sus hijos, probablemente por cómo vestían. La familia admitió que a menudo se los confunde con estadounidenses.

Quimixto es una playa, pueblo y cascada muy conocida y popular, que se encuentra entre Playa Las Ánimas y Playa Majahuitas, junto a la desembocadura del río La Puerta, en la parte sur de Bahía de Banderas en Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, México.

Puede llegar allí tomando un taxi acuático (panga) desde Boca de Tomatlán, será un viaje de 20 minutos o desde el muelle de la Playa de Los Muertos (unos 45 minutos). Otra forma popular de llegar es con uno de los muchos tours de cruceros que parten en Puerto Vallarta y que van a la parte sur de la Bahía de Banderas.
En este video recorremos desde el pueblo hasta pasado Xinalani, la playa es de arena de grano medio es estrecha (en promedio 20 metros - 62 pies de ancho) y 1200 m (4000 pies) de largo, principalmente con olas suaves, hay algunos locales y restaurantes de comida mexicana y mariscos donde encontrarás platos locales sencillos, rústicos pero sabrosos. Las aguas limpias y cristalinas son populares entre los buceadores, fans del esnórkel y también hay sectores que según la temporada son usadas por surfistas.
Otra actividad popular cuando visita Quimixto es ir a la cascada, es una caminata agradable, pero puede ser mucho para niños y adultos que no están en buena forma, para ellos existe la opción de ir a caballo.

Quimixto is a well-known and popular beach, village, and waterfall, found between Las Animas and Majahuitas, by the La Puerta river mouth, in the southern part of the Banderas Bay.

You can get there by taking a water cab (panga) from Boca de Tomatlan, it will be a 20 minute ride or from the pier at Los Muertos Beach (about 45 minutes). Another popular way to get there is with one of the many cruise tours that depart from Puerto Vallarta and go to the southern part of Banderas Bay.
In this video we travel from the town past Xinalani, the beach is of medium grain sand is narrow (on average 20 meters - 62 feet wide) and 1200 m (4000 feet) long, mostly with gentle waves, there are a few local Mexican and seafood restaurants where you will find simple, rustic but tasty local dishes. The clean and crystal clear waters are popular with divers, snorkelers and there are also areas that are used by surfers depending on the season.
Another popular activity when visiting Quimixto is going to the waterfall, it is a nice hike, but can be a lot for children and adults who are not in good shape, for them there is the option to go horseback riding.
