Zaghouan | Tunisia | Hiking

This is a hiking trip I took to Zaghouan, Tunisa. Beautiful place!
Hope you enjoy the journey along with me.

Zaghouan:
Zaghwan (or Zaghouan; Tunisian Arabic: زغوان) is a town in the northern half of Tunisia. Situated on a low ridge of the Dorsale Mountains, the town has a mild climate and presents a green aspect. Cold water from here was taken by aqueduct to Carthage. The town is famous for its roses, originally cultivated by Muslim refugees from Spain in the seventeenth century. The town is located around 100 km due south of Tunis and around 50 km inland (west) from the Gulf of Hammamet and has an estimated population of around 38,445 (2014). It is the capital of the Zaghouan Governorate.

Zaghouan Aquaduct:
The Zaghouan Aqueduct or Aqueduct of Carthage is an ancient Roman aqueduct, which supplied the North African city of Carthage with water. From its source in Zaghouan it flows a total of 132 km, making it amongst the longest aqueducts in the Roman Empire.

Day Trips from Tunis: Roman archaeology at Thuburbo Majus

Today we explore the Ancient Roman archaeological site of Thuburbo Majus, 60km south-west of Tunis in Zaghouan Governorate. Like nearby Uthina, this was formerly a Punic town that Emperor Augustus then used to settle his veterans following the last war of the Roman Republic, when Rome transitioned from Republic to Empire. Also like nearby Uthina, it is amazingly well preserved and we had the site completely to ourselves!

Cap fartas (cap chauve), un endroit paradisiaque à Takilsa Nabeul Tunisie -

Zaghouan Roman Temple Of Water [Since Year 128]

The Water temple of Zaghouan is usually referred to by its French name, Temple des Eaux, or Temple des Numphes. It dates back to Roman times, and was not a temple, simpy a grand fountain.
Its location is as impressive today as it must have been in the 2nd century CE. Above it rises the 1,295 metre high Zaghouan Mountain, and in front stretches the fields. You may almost see the Mediterranean Sea on a clear day.
Its decoration has similarities with what you would find in a temple. There are 12 niches each having a life size statue representing the 12 months of a year. In the middle there was really a temple, of which only the central niche remains.
The basin below the platform is shaped like the figure of 8, and served to filter the water before letting it on to the aqueducts. The best remains of the aqueduct are found near Oudna
