Our «10 Reasons to visit ...» series

When visiting a new city with a relative short amount of time, what should you see and do to get the most out of your stay? In our «10 Reasons to visit ...» series, we try to give travellers a short overview of what the place in focus has to offer.

When doing research in front of a visit, the Internet is flooded with annoying web sites selling packages, trips and guided tours. If you are like us and just want an overview, and then select for yourself what to visit, we hope our videos are useful. We will of course not cover all attractions and we are not local experts with inside information, but we try to give our users some tips. If you have more tips and additions, please use the comment field below to share.

Norway’s Most Attractive Travel Route #thenorthsearoute #norway #roadtrip

The North Sea Route takes the visitor to the most beautiful places along Norway’s south-west coast. The journey along the sea. On two wheels or four. It does not matter. Imagine the opposite of monotony. Then you will know what the North Sea Route has to offer. A journey along the sea, from Kristiansand in the south to Haugesund in the north.

The Airbnb we stayed at

Stapnes

This is a walking area with diverse experiences in a distinctive rocky coast with adjoining heathlands and cultivated pastures. Stapnes Fort from World War II is located in the area and consists of bunkers and cannon emplacements. Stapnes Fort was one of the first coastal forts that the Germans built in Norway and was one of the few actively used in battle against the Allied forces.

Here is a video about how the Norwegians stop the Nazis getting the atomic bomb!!

Kongevegen - the Royal road

Along the Jæren coastline, one can follow paths that people walked before you thousands of years ago. You get to see remains of the prehistoric sunken road and the historic Kongevegen (the Royal road/King's road) from the 1600s.

Amphidromic point of Egersund

The small Norwegian town of Egersund has a special location. It is located just at the point where the tidal waves from the English Channel coming from the south meets the tidal waves passing north around Scotland. This creates a special effect where there is virtually no tidal motion around the area.

TUNNELSTUO

Tunnelstuo is a spectacular place to sleep in a former operative tunnel built in 1921. You sleep in hammocks inside the tunnel. There are two large openings to the tunnel, and it is around 250 metres long. From the opening next to a stone picnic table, you have a stunning view of the fjord and the valley, surrounded by steep mountain sides. Jøssingfjord is a paradise for mountain climbers. The most popular climbing areas are Hedlersfjellet and Profilveggen. Experience lunar landscape in the area For hikers who enjoy short hikes, there are 10 marked hiking trails ranging from 1 - 5 hours, where you can see the special moon rock landscapes. One of these hikes goes to Fladen, a short, but steep hike up 434 steps along a trolley track built in 1918.

HELLEREN

Perhaps you have driven past these, or seen a picture of these little two houses under Helleren in Jøssingfjord. If you drive along the North Sea Route, you can see them from the Rv 44 somewhere in between Egersund and Flekkefjord. Surrounded by all the tones of grey in the color scale In a world of nuances of grey lie the two small houses in a particular, extraordinary light: Jøssingfjord and Helleren are surrounded by all the tones of grey in the color scale. Helleren - Hedlaren - forms a natural roof and shelter that have been taken advantage of by people for thousands of years. Helleren is large - the drop fall measures at its deepest 10 metres. The two houses do not have proper roofing- simply because they are protected by Helleren - and this is also the reason why these two houses and this landscape provide a unique and special experience. Both houses date back from the 1800s, however large parts of the buildings might be considerably older.

The Altmark Incident

In February 1940, boarding parties from HMS Cossack stormed the German tanker Altmark which was hiding in a Norwegian fjord and released 299 prisoners.

The incident – a breach of Norway’s wartime neutrality – prompted widespread celebrations in the British media, while the words used by the boarding teams (“The Navy’s here!”) became a popular rallying cry.

The prisoners aboard Hitler’s hell ship – as the press dubbed the tanker – had been seized by the raider Graf Spee as it picked off Allied merchant shipping in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

When the Graf Spee was cornered off South America, the Altmark attempted to run the gauntlet of the British blockade to reach Germany – until it was located in Jøssingfjord, near the southwestern tip of Norway. Cossack was sent in to free the captive sailors. Eight Germans were killed in the ensuing action which served as the spark to the Scandinavian powder keg, prompting Hitler to invade Norway two months later.
