Today we’re showing you around this charming and historic university town situated in southwestern Germany. This was the final stop of our trip across Germany and while we only had 3 days here, we still managed to cover a lot of the main attractions in the old town.
In this video, we’ll be touring the ruins of Heidelberg Castle and exploring some of its gems which include an enormous wine barrel and the apothecary museum. We’ll wander through Heidelberg University, which happens to be the oldest university in all of Germany, and at one point had an infamous student jail. Plus, we’ll hike the Philosopher’s Way for epic sunset views, we’ll stroll along the banks of the Neckar River, and we’ll enjoy some hearty German and international dishes along the way because you already know how much we love food.

City of Heidelberg, Germany - the Old Town (Altstadt) of Heidelberg, top sites to see and visit. Let's go to the beautiful city of Heidelberg which is a college town situated on the river Neckar in south-west Germany. At the 2015 census, Heidelberg's population was 156,257, with roughly a quarter of its population being students. Founded in 1386 in Heidelberg, Heidelberg University is Germany's oldest and one of Europe's most reputable universities.
We are going to walk along the Old Town of Heidelberg (German: Altstadt), on the south bank of the Neckar, which is long and narrow and we are going to visit popular and historic sites including: the marketplace of Heidelberg (or, the market square) with the imposing Town Hall; the Main Street (Hauptstrasse) which is a mile-long pedestrian street, running the length of the old town; the old stone bridge of Heidelberg which was erected 1786–1788 and which is a medieval bridge gate is on the side of the old town, and was originally part of the town wall; the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche), a late Gothic church in the marketplace of the old town; and other historic and important sites.

Die Erkundung der Altstadt von Eberbach startete vom Ortsteil Neckar-Wimmersbach aus und geht über die Neckarbrücke durch die schöne Altstadt zum Naturpark Neckartal-Odenwald mit dem Pulverturm und zweiter zum Wahrzeichen von Eberbach - der Kirche St. Johannes Nepomuk. Weiter das durch die Neckaranlage mit Skulpturenpark und am Neckarufer entlang wieder über die Neckarbrücke in die Auen und am Badezentrum wieder zurück zum Startpunkt.

The Easter Market at Kloster Eberbach is considered to be one of the top Easter Markets. The talent on display here is unbelievable. Of course, those are eggs that I could not photograph. At least 80% of the vendors had no photos allowed. I was sad to see some people ignoring this and sneaking photos. Please do not do this. Respect the artists creating these lovely works of art.
Most expensive egg seen today? 700€.
If you want to go to this market next year, I will have the dates posted on our Frankfurt on Foot blog in 2024.
Getting here is easy by train. There is an hourly train leaving Frankfurt that also stops in Wiesbaden, heading down the Rhein to Neuwied. When it gets to Eltville, get off and catch bus 172 about 10 min. later. Return the same way. The bus and the train run once an hour and their times match up nicely. Cars were parked way down 2 different roads, so a very long walk. Glad to have taken the train and bus.
