One of the most beautiful island getaways anywhere in the WORLD is located right here in AFRICA!
This tiny island paradise just east of Madagascar, off the eastern coast of Africa, is one of the most beautiful places on EARTH!
Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is home to only around 1 million people, despite being TWICE the size of Hong Kong. However this island paradise features beautiful weather year round, and plenty for everyone.
Mauritius more than doubles it’s population with tourists who visit each year, as in 2018 when it hosted over 1.4 million visitors, including yours truly.
Most tourists arrive by airplane, however some do arrive by boat. Mauritius is a very popular destination for many from other African countries looking for a getaway without going too far from home.
Hey, 1.4 million people a year cannot be wrong!
So let’s jump into our list of the ten reasons we think you should visit Mauritius!
10. Food
If you love food, you will love your time in Mauritius, trust me!
Mauritian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the world, with influences from French, Indian, African and Asian kitchens coming together to create its unique flavours. Be sure to scan restaurant menus for daube, fish vindaye, chicken or fish kalia (mixed with vegetables), mutton halim (a soup), a classic tomato-based chicken stew and a local take on Indian vindaloo.
You can also try Mauritian snacks such as dhal puri, a traditional flatbread filled with spicy ground split peas and served with chutney. Or try the island’s famous babonne, a fleshy white fish similar to red snapper.
9. Festivals
If you want to experience what’s said to be the largest Hindu pilgrimage outside India, plan a visit during Maha Shivaratri.
Each February, around 500,000 people make the pilgrimage on foot to Grand Bassin, a lake near which stands a giant statue of Lord Shiva.
You can also visit during Diwali, the festival of light, held every Spring, and feast on gâteau patate – sweet potato and coconut cakes made and offered as gifts between families and neighbours.
Other festivals such as Thaipusam, Ganesh Chathurthi, Ugadi and Chinese New Year are also widely celebrated and each of them gives a glimpse into the many cultures that come together to create the island of Mauritius.
8. Markets
Featuring fruit and vegetable vendors, artisans selling handicrafts, spice vendors and street-food hawkers, the markets all over the island offer a cheerful slice of Mauritian life.

We fly our drone over the famous Le Morne mountain, visit the seven colored earth and Chamarel waterfall and drive through the Black River Gorge. Of course we also see the best hotels and lay down on the perfect beaches. This video is the perfect guide for a family holiday to Mauritius!
In the previous episodes you saw how we made a road trip from Cape Town to Kruger Park in South-Africa. We drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on a safari in Etosha National Park. Lately we visited Botswana and Zimbabwe, to cross the border again back to South Africa. From Johannesburg we take you island hopping on Mauritius and also the French island of La Reunion.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, Mauritius is already destination number 26 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for one and a half year now. Follow us on this world tour, first in Mauritius and then to many more beautiful destinations across the globe! Point O' Woods is a hamlet that consists of a private vacation retreat on Fire Island, New York, in Suffolk County. Although it resembles a village or small town, with services such as a ferry port, a general store, church and fire department, the private community is open exclusively to members and their guests, who are the only persons allowed in through the hamlet's gate, or allowed to use the private ferry that runs to Point O' Woods from Bay Shore on Long Island.
Point O Woods feels like another century, and residents here guard their privacy. This stunning community borders Ocean Bay Park on the west and a stretch of open National Seashore to the east. Ferries leave from Bay Shore
Fire Island runs from Democrat Point / Fire Island Inlet in the west to Moriches Inlet / Cupsoque Beach in the east.
Fire Island is 31 miles long and 2 - 3 blocks wide and is comprised of about 20 distinct communities
Neighboring Long Island is 118 miles long
The name of Fire Island first appeared on a deed in 1789

A 1931 Nor’easter caused the formation of the Moriches inlet and resulting in the separation of Southampton and Fire Island. The storm inflicted nearly $70 billion (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba. While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter, with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km).
Hurricane Sandy was referred to as “Superstore Sandy because it had lost some of the traits needed to call it a hurricane. Sandy developed as an ordinary hurricane in the Caribbean, but as it moved up the East Coast and encountered cooler air and water, it began to loose its tropical characteristics. Hurricane Sandy was no longer a hurricane when it made land fall on Fire Island which is why it is also called Superstorm Sandy. The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.

The expansive harbor is perfect for Long-islanders to dock and enjoy the beach for the day. There are no stores here and residents bring their own supplies or shop in Fair Harbor or Ocean Beach. There are no boardwalks, so plan to carry your stuff over sandy paths. But there’s more happening here after dark at The Shack.
Atlantique is a small town known as a haven for boat owners to dock and play. They come for the day or stay on board for longer in the large 150+ slip marina. Residents play along with them at the beach.
The Shack is the gathering place, snack bar and at night, opens serving its legendary 5:00 Rocket Fuels. Live bands play and sun-kissed people dance the night away.
Ferries to Atlantique leave from Bay Shore, but stop only in Dunewood.
There are about 50 homes, including the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Fire Island headquarters. The marina is a popular destination with 150+ slips. You can use the electrical and fresh water hook-ups, pump-out station, 24-hour restrooms, hot showers, playground, handball and basketball courts and BBQ area. The bay and ocean beaches have lifeguards. There is a no pet policy here in the facilities.

The expansive harbor is perfect for Long-islanders to dock and enjoy the beach for the day. There are no stores here and residents bring their own supplies or shop in Fair Harbor or Ocean Beach. There are no boardwalks, so plan to carry your stuff over sandy paths. But there’s more happening here after dark at The Shack.
Atlantique is a small town known as a haven for boat owners to dock and play. They come for the day or stay on board for longer in the large 150+ slip marina. Residents play along with them at the beach.
The Shack is the gathering place, snack bar and at night, opens serving its legendary 5:00 Rocket Fuels. Live bands play and sun-kissed people dance the night away.
Ferries to Atlantique leave from Bay Shore, but stop only in Dunewood.
There are about 50 homes, including the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Fire Island headquarters. The marina is a popular destination with 150+ slips. You can use the electrical and fresh water hook-ups, pump-out station, 24-hour restrooms, hot showers, playground, handball and basketball courts and BBQ area. The bay and ocean beaches have lifeguards. There is a no pet policy here in the facilities.
Fire Island runs from Democrat Point / Fire Island Inlet in the west to Moriches Inlet / Cupsoque Beach in the east.
Fire Island is 31 miles long and 2 - 3 blocks wide and is comprised of about 20 distinct communities
Neighboring Long Island is 118 miles long
The name of Fire Island first appeared on a deed in 1789

There was a time when Fire Island was connected to Jones Beach Island, a single island stretching 60 miles from Jones Beach to South Hampton. The Fire Island Inlet naturally formed in 1863, and was later expanded through manpower, once over 9 miles wide before shrinking to its current width.

A 1931 Nor’easter caused the formation of the Moriches inlet and resulting in the separation of Southampton and Fire Island. The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.

Enjoy incredible winter tour in New York. Boats sway quietly to the whispering winds of mid-winter , hushing the secrets held within the inner bays and inlets of Long Island Sound. Also hushed are the rich histories of American Revolutionary patriots, who settled in this area, their land sold a century earlier to the English, by the native Matinecock tribe. Nearby, the Old Northport burial ground is perched on a frigid hillside. After 3 centuries, it remains one of the oldest rural cemeteries in the United States. Explore 18th century tombstones in a serene setting. You can walk in solitude at the wooded edge, amidst the icy tombstones that stand in perfect silence. The setting Sun bathes Victorian-era homes with golden rays, reminding inhabitants of the warmth still to come, but not all that quickly. Victorian 19th century was Northport's heyday, as it was once a renowned center for wooden ship-building. Hints of the approaching Summer season are ever-present, with bold colors occasionally breaking the dreary gray backdrops of Winter.

Ocean Bay Park, AKA “The Park” is a popular destination for Long Islanders to come for the day and play. Fire Islanders join them to have a few beers and dance to live music at Flynn’s or Schooners. The mood here is relaxed and let it be. The town is diverse, inclusive and just a little quirky in a very nice way. Day Trippers and residents get along just fine. This is a “yes” kind of town. Ferries leave from Bay Shore.
Ocean Bay Park is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on Fire Island, a barrier island separated from the southern side of Long Island by the Great South Bay. To reach Ocean Bay Park, one must take a ferry or water taxi from Bay Shore.
Housing includes group houses and family homes. Nightlife and full-service restaurants include Flynn's (which also has a 50-boat marina) and the Schooner Inn.
Ocean Bay Park was once filled with college and recently graduated young people, but has since shifted to a more family friendly community. The community has always been home to many somewhat older affluent home owners who enjoy the laid back beauty of Fire Island with family and friends.
The residents of Ocean Bay Park have a history of being on the forefront of social change. On September 2, 1967 Dr. Martin Luther King was the guest of honor at a cocktail party held by Mr. and Mrs. Hyman Abbott as a fundraiser for his work. Earlier that day Dr. King spoke about community, the war in Vietnam, anti-Semitism and the need for a third political party. 1,500 residents attended that rally in Seaview.

Fire Island Pines (often referred to as The Pines, simply Pines, or FIP) is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on Fire Island, a barrier island on the southern side of Long Island.
Fire Island Pines and the adjoining Cherry Grove are the areas most strongly associated with the gay community on Fire Island. The island has been referred to as America's first gay and lesbian town and served since the 1920s and 1930s as a refuge for vacationers and others who desired the more liberal attitude the island's occupants allowed.
The Pines, which has the most expensive real estate on Fire Island, has approximately 600 houses and a 100-unit condominium complex on its square mile of location. It has two-thirds of the swimming pools on Fire Island. Its summer seasonal population is between 2,500 and 3,000. In 2004, 12 people listed it as their full-time residence.
The Pines: Understated Elegance
As you enter the U-shaped harbor, you are surrounded by sophistication. Yachts float beside crafts of all sizes and in the daytime, residents go about their shopping and dining in the “downtown” area of the Pines. Wooden “roller coaster” boardwalks wind their way through luxurious, lavish, private homes. There are more pools in The Pines than anywhere else on the Island.
Fire Island Pines is home to the gay community as has an understated elegance. Their next door neighbor is Cherry Grove, Fire island’s other LGBQ town. Residents are very active in their community, hosting many cultural events and fundraisers all season long.
