Springfield, MA - 10 fun things to do

Visiting or moving, see all there is to do in Springfield, MA.
Welcome to Greater Springfield! With Springfield, the fourth largest city in New England, as its geographic hub, the region offers a booming economy with more affordable pricing and rural feel than its big city neighbors, making it a perfect place to live, work and play. Located at the crossroads of New England with easy access to the north-south Interstate 91 and the east-west Interstate 90, we are situated next to Connecticut River and surrounded by mountains, bluffs, and rolling hills. More than 5,000 businesses call Greater Springfield home and residents take pride in its rich history: the birthplace of basketball with the basketball hall of fame, the invention of the gas-powered motorcycle, the publication of the first Merriam-Webster dictionary and the first commercial radio broadcast. The region, also known as the Knowledge Corridor, is home to nearly 30 world-renowned higher education institutions and more than 150,000 students. It is the economic center of Western Massachusetts with the largest concentration of retail, manufacturing, entertainment, banking, legal, and medical groups. Its cost of living, highly-skilled workforce and affordable real estate are just some of the reasons businesses like German-based Menck Windows choose to make us their U.S. headquarters. Looking for something to do? Look no further! Our $662 million tourism industry offers an abundance of historical sites, museums, sporting attractions and a major convention center. Take a thrill ride on one of the ten roller coasters at Six Flags New England. Wander through the Springfield Museums -- five world-class museums located the Springfield Central Cultural District, featuring the largest Impressionist collection, the Museum of Springfield History and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Park, right here in the birthplace of Theodore Geisel. Or take a stroll down Mulberry Street, made famous in Dr. Seuss’ first children’s book. Try your hand at a slam dunk the Basketball Hall of Fame, an 80,000 square foot shrine to the world’s second most popular sport. Take in some live music at one of the many clubs, pubs and watering holes. Catch an Off-Broadway show at City Stage or Symphony Hall. Or sit back and relax to the smooth sounds of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, the largest symphony outside of Boston. Enjoy the Painted Lady mansions listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visit Old First Church, a key stop on the African American Freedom Trail. Spend a day at Lupa Zoo and have a picnic in Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country. Or walk, bike, hike or paddle our more than 2400 acres of parkland, tennis courts, walking trails, playgrounds and picnic areas. Or just spend the day shopping at the Eastfield Mall, a 824,000 square foot shopping center, and head to the suburban eclectic boutiques featuring local and international designers, artisan shops and galleries. And when September and October roll around, there’s no better place to be than the Big E, the sixth largest agricultural fair in America. We’ve got a lot to offer, so come see us soon -- and stay for a day or stay for forever.

Visiting Prospect Park is one of the best things to do while in Brooklyn. It is one of the finest natural parks in the whole of New York City. The park is ideal for a picnic with family or friends, birdwatching, or silent leisure. Other places like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Brooklyn Promenade which offer a stunning and picturesque view of New York City's skyline, all contribute to Brooklyn being a tourist attraction in its own right. Another of the best things to do in Brooklyn is to treat yourself to any of its famous restaurants. Brooklyn is widely known for its awesome restaurants, and places like DeKalb Market Hall, Sunday in Brooklyn and Brooklyn Crab are famous for the exquisite dining experiences they offer. The restaurants and diners serve palatable delicacies in their uniquely distinct surroundings. It's impossible to talk about flea markets and not mention Brooklyn. In fact, visiting the Brooklyn Flea is also one of the best things to do in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Flea is a one-stop shop for anything and everything pre-owned. There is more than enough to see, do, and eat in Brooklyn.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Plymouth is a port city and unitary authority in South West England. It is located on the south coast of Devon, approximately 36 miles (58 km) south-west of Exeter and 193 miles (311 km) south-west of London. It is bordered by Cornwall to the west and south-west.

Plymouth's early history extends to the Bronze Age when a first settlement emerged at Mount Batten. This settlement continued as a trading post for the Roman Empire, until it was surpassed by the more prosperous village of Sutton founded in the ninth century, now called Plymouth. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers departed Plymouth for the New World and established Plymouth Colony, the second English settlement in what is now the United States of America. During the English Civil War, the town was held by the Parliamentarians and was besieged between 1642 and 1646.

Throughout the Industrial Revolution, Plymouth grew as a commercial shipping port, handling imports and passengers from the Americas, and exporting local minerals (tin, copper, lime, china clay and arsenic). The neighbouring town of Devonport became strategically important to the Royal Navy for its shipyards and dockyards. In 1914, three neighbouring independent towns, viz. the county borough of Plymouth, the County Borough of Devonport, and the urban district of East Stonehouse were merged, becoming the County Borough of Plymouth. In 1928, it achieved city status. During World War II, due to the city's naval importance, the German military targeted and partially destroyed the city by bombing, an act known as the Plymouth Blitz. After the war, the city centre was completely rebuilt. Subsequent expansion led to the incorporation of Plympton, Plymstock, and other outlying suburbs, in 1967.

The city is home to 262,100 (mid-2019 est.) people, making it the 30th-most populous built-up area in the United Kingdom and the second-largest city in the South West, after Bristol. It is governed locally by Plymouth City Council and is represented nationally by two MPs. Plymouth's economy remains strongly influenced by shipbuilding and seafaring but has tended toward a service economy since the 1990s. It has ferry links to Brittany (Roscoff and St Malo) and to Spain (Santander). It has the largest operational naval base in Western Europe, HMNB Devonport, and is home to the University of Plymouth. Plymouth is categorized as a Small-Port City using the Southampton System for port-city classification.

Interstate 91

Interstate 91 is not I-90, so that's an exciting change! It's a Jeckle and Hyde road, busy and dense in the south and rural and sparse in the north. Thanks to Mike DiMauro and Mikes Mission for this episode's Superthanks! Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!

- Mall of America
- Nickelodeon Universe
- Sea Life Aquarium
- Minnesota Wildlife Refuge

#Boston, #Massachusetts #CruisePort
Boston, Massachusetts is one of the most popular #locations in the United States, offering many #historical_sights, #museums, #live_performances and #incredible_food. It’s not hard to understand why Boston is both a port of call and a departure port. It doesn’t matter if you are departing from Boston or visiting for the day, there are countless sightseeing activities you will want to take part in. Sports are a #HUGE deal in Boston, so consider yourself lucky if you get the opportunity to catch a #Bruins or #Celtics game at TD Bank Garden or a Red Sox game at the legendary Fenway Park. Sample some gourmet seafood, or more importantly, some REAL New England clam chowder at restaurants like the Union Oyster House or the Quincy Market.

There are too many breweries to name, and an unbelievable amount of pubs and bars with craft beers that you've never heard of, so you'll have to sample some yourself before embarking for your cruise from Boston.

Stroll along the Freedom Trail which is a home to 16 Revolutionary War sites.

Visit the restored Boston Tea Party ships and a museum located at Griffin’s Wharf.

Stop by America’s oldest college, Harvard University, and enjoy the learning about the history of this school.
