First up, Chattanooga is on the Tennesse River, so you’ll for sure want to include some river-related activities in your itinerary. We recommend saving half a day for the Tennessee Riverwalk, a beautiful 13-mile greenway that you can cycle or walk around, checking out whatever live music events or markets happen to be on at the time. For the military-minded, be sure to book a one-of-a-kind river tour with Chattanooga Duck. They take passengers out on the water on authentically restored WWII amphibious duck boats!
If you love the great outdoors, Chattanooga has you covered there, too. Head to Rock City Gardens and the Ruby Falls to see not only a rare view out across seven of America’s states but also one of the tallest underground waterfalls in the world. Though caving and hiking might sound dangerous, rest assured these outdoor activities are family-friendly. Chattanooga used to be one of the big railroad transport hubs of the region, and though the trains have gone, their legacy remains in the form of tourist sites. There are tons of things to do in Chattanooga for train buffs. They can ride the rails on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum steam train or stay in renovated sleeper cars at downtown hotel Chattanooga Choo Choo. The Bluff View Art District is home to not one but three nation-leading art museums—Hunter Museum of American Art, The Houston Museum of Decorative Arts, and The River Gallery—as well as casual cafes, hip eateries, and boutique shopping. Chattanooga is a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, with a population of 177,571 in 2016.[4] The fourth-largest Tennessee city, it is the seat of Hamilton County. Located in southeastern Tennessee, on the Tennessee River, served by multiple railroads and Interstate highways, Chattanooga is a transit hub. Chattanooga lies 120 miles (190 km) northwest of Atlanta, Georgia, 120 miles (190 km) southwest of Knoxville, Tennessee, 135 miles (217 km) southeast of Nashville, Tennessee, 120 miles (190 km) northeast of Huntsville, Alabama, and 148 miles (238 km) northeast of Birmingham, Alabama.
The city, with a downtown elevation of approximately 680 feet (210 m), lies at the transition between the ridge-and-valley portion of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau. Surrounded by mountains and ridges, the official nickname for Chattanooga is the Scenic City, reinforced by the city's reputation for outdoor activities. Unofficial nicknames include River City, Chatt, Nooga, Chattown, and Gig City, referencing Chattanooga's claims that it has the fastest internet service in the Western Hemisphere.[8][9]
Chattanooga is internationally known for the 1941 song Chattanooga Choo Choo by Glenn Miller and his orchestra.
Chattanooga is home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and Chattanooga State Community College.
The city has its own typeface, Chatype, which was launched in August 2012. According to the Nooga.com website, this marks the first time that an American city has its own custom-made typeface and also the first time a crowd-funded custom-made typeface has been used for any municipality in the world.[10]
