Göttingen is a German town known for its university. The Old Botanical Garden has a collection of medicinal plants and an arboretum. In the town's rampart-ringed medieval center, the Altes Rathaus is a centuries-old town hall. Outside, stands the Gänseliesel, an iconic fountain topped by a statue of a little girl with a goose. Southeast, the 19th-century Bismarck Tower offers views of the town and surrounding forest.
In southern Lower Saxony, Göttingen is a university town in the Leine Valley. Life in the city almost revolves around the University of Göttingen. This institution was founded in 1734 by King George II of England and Elector of Hanover, and is the oldest university in Lower Saxony.
As one in five people in the city are students, a lot of the best things about Göttingen are related in some way to the university. Take the botanical garden that was established by the brilliant anatomist Albrecht von Haller or Emil Wiechert’s pioneering geophysics institute. There are also lots of quirkier sights like the statue that students kiss when they get their doctorates, or the little house where Otto von Bismarch lived during his time at the uni.
On Göttingen’s central marketplace in front of the old town hall is an Art Nouveau fountain and statue that has been here since 1901. The statue is pretty enough, and represents a girl carrying a pair of geese, one in a basket and another in her right hand. But what makes the Gänseliesel such a landmark is the traditional connected to it.
Göttingen’s old town hall was first raised in 1270 and spent more than 700 years as the city’s administrative centre. A three nave Gothic hall church, St. Jacobi was begin in 1361 and completed by 1433. The tower, crested by a white Baroque dome, is the tallest structure in the old town at 72 metres.
In 4.5 hectares on the northern curve of Göttingen’s former defensive wall is an astounding botanical garden founded in 1736 and maintained by the university. The art collection of the University of Göttingen dates back to the same decade that the university was founded.
Barely 10 minutes north of Göttingen cresting a hill over the village of Bovenden is a castle built in the 12th century as the seat of the Lords of Plesse. The cherished 19th-century humorist and illustrator Wilhelm Busch spent much of his youth in this historic water mill in bucolic countryside east of the city.
The military commander and chancellor of the German Empire Otto von Bismarck studied law at the University of Göttingen in 1832-1833, and was commemorated with a tower 60 years later.
Unlike many of the memorial towers to Bismarck in Germany, Bismarckturm on the 332-metre Kleperberg hill was started while he was still alive and was named after Bismarck with his permission.
On the slope of the Hainberg hill to the east of Göttingen is a geophysics institute established by Emil Wiechert for the university. A lot of Göttingen’s Medieval and Renaissance architecture either survived the Second World War intact or was quickly restored afterwards.
Behind the west wing of the university’s Aula building at Wilhelmsplatz 1 is one of the best-preserved student jails in the country. The museum for the university’s ethnology institute is out of the ordinary and is made up of some vital collections from 18th-century expeditions.
The city’s last remaining noble residence is the setting for a museum all about Göttingen. Impressive outside, but even more special inside, the 50-metre-long Paulinerkirche is a deconsecrated church that has become a library and lecture hall for the university. Otto von Bismarck stayed in a cute little house on the city’s south wall during his time as a student at the University of Göttingen. The Bismarckhäuschen is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Duderstadt is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns in Germany. The old city fortifications with the western tower ensemble, imposing churches, the old town hall from the 14th century and 600 colorful half-timbered houses from different eras adorn the picturesque old town.

St. Servatius Church in Duderstadt, Germany (July 2022)

The St. Servatius church was built from around 1370 to 1520 in the late Gothic period.
The church was severely damaged by a town fire in 1915 and lost the spire and the baroque interior.
In 1917 it got a new Art Nouveau interior.
Only individual pieces of the former baroque furnishings have been preserved.
In 1928 the tower was restored, and made higher than before.

Als letzten Teil unseres Drei-Tage-Urlaubs in Testungen/Thüringen besuchten wir die wunderschöne Fachwerkstadt Duderstadt. Gemächlich bummelten wir durch die malerischen Gässchen, über die breite Marktstraße und warfen auch einen Blick in die beiden imposanten Kirchen. Begleitet uns auf dem Spaziergang durch dieses mittelalterliche Kleinod.

THE EICHSFELDS CATHEDRAL
The St. Cyriakus Church in Duderstadt is a Roman Catholic Basilica . It is considered the main church in Duderstadt and is called the upper church there and also “Eichsfeld Cathedral” in the region. Along with the town hall, the Catholic parish church is one of the oldest buildings in Duderstadt. Construction of the imposing western work began as early as 1240. The history of the origin of this church reflects the growing prosperity and the determination of the citizens of Duderstadt. The upper church is rich in medieval and baroque works of art. These include the Gothic winged altar in the high choir (around 1500), the Trinity altar in the Johannes choir (front left, around 1470) and other works of art such as St. Kinship (late Gothic) at the altar of Mary (front right). The church is also adorned with a baroque organ from 1732, which is unique in the German organ scene.

Die St. Cyriakus Kirche in Duderstadt ist eine römisch-katholische Propsteikirche. Sie gilt als Hauptkirche in Duderstadt und wird dort Oberkirche und in der Region auch „Eichsfelder Dom“ genannt. Die katholische Pfarrkirche ist neben dem Rathaus eines der ältesten Bauwerke Duderstadts. Mit der Errichtung des imposanten Westwerks wurde bereits 1240 begonnen. Die Entstehungsgeschichte dieser Kirche spiegelt den wachsenden Wohlstand und die Entschlossenheit der Bürger von Duderstadt wieder. Die Oberkirche ist reich an mittelalterlichen und barocken Kunstwerken. Dazu zählen der gotische Flügelaltar im Hochchor (etwa 1500), der Dreifaltigkeitsaltar im Johanneschor (vorne links, etwa 1470) und andere Kunstwerke wie die hl. Sippe (spätgotisch) am Marienaltar (vorne rechts). Die Kirche ziert außerdem eine Barockorgel von 1732, die einzigartig in der deutschen Orgellandschaft ist.

Duderstadt-Fachwerkstadt in Niedersachsen. Das mittelalterliche Stadtbild wird von ca. 600 Fachwerkhäusern, unterschiedlicher Epochen geprägt. Viele der Fachwerkhäuser sind mit sehr reichen Schnitzereien versehen. Der mittelalterliche Fachwerkkern von Duderstadt ist vollständig erhalten und befindet sich innerhalb der historischen Stadtmauern, so das man sich kaum verlaufen kann.
In den engen Gassen, fühlt man sich in das Mittelalter zurück versetzt.
Die Innenstadt wird von den beiden grossen Stadtkirchen St. Cyriakus und St. Servatius begrenzt. #Duderstadt
Innerhalb der Stadtmauern von Duderstadt gibt es sehr viele interessante Plätze zu entdecken und hier liegen auch die Meisten Sehenswürdigkeiten sehr nah zusammen.
Eines der schönsten Gebäuder der Stadt, ist das sehr repräsentative Rathaus.
Viele der Fachwerkhäuser wurden um 1994 neu saniert.
Eine bekannte Veranstaltung ist der Frühlingsmarkt Duderstadt.
Das Land um Duderstadt ist sehr fruchtbar und wurde im Mittelalter als goldene Mark bezeichnet.
Wer übernachten will findet sehr viele Hotels und Ferienwohnungen.
Duderstadt, gelegen in der üppigen Kulturlandschaft des Eichsfeldes, wurde bereits 929 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Duderstadt zählt sowohl durch sein in einmaliger Geschlossenheit erhaltenes mittelalterliches Stadtbild als auch durch seine Baudenkmäler und Sehenswürdigkeiten zu den sehenswertesten Fachwerkstädten Deutschlands.
Duderstadt i. auch wichtiger Wirtschaftsstandort, Otto Bock ist hier ansässig.

Duderstadt (Niedersachsen) ist eine schicke mittelalterliche Fachwerkstadt am Harz in Niedersachsen.Ein Muss für alle Fachwerkfreunde.
Besonders bemerkenswert sind die geschnitzten Köpfe an manchen Fachwerkhäusern, wie dem Hotel zur Tanne und dem Wankesche Haus.
Es gibt auch viele Schnitzereien aus dem Leben der damaligen Zeit - wie das Landsknechtshaus, in der Westertorstrasse.
In der Nähe von Duderstadt liegt die Rhumequelle - bei Rhumspringe - eine der stärksten Quellen in Deutschland.
Man betritt Duderstadt am besten über die Westerturmstrasse. Hier sieht man den Westerturm mit seiner verdrehten Spitze, dabei hatte der Teufel seine Hand im Spiel.
Der Westerturm gehörte zur Stadtbefestigung von Duderstadt, mit den umliegenden Gebäuden bildet er das Westerturmensemble.
Hier befindet sich die interessante Ausstellung Stadtluft mit frei über die steigende Bedeutung der Städte im Mittelalter.
Dann kommt man auf die Marktstrasse - mit seinen imposanten Kirchenbauten.
Als erstes sieht man die St. Servatius - Kirche. Ein Besuch des Kircheninneren lohnt auf alle Fälle.
In der Marktstraße liegt auch das imposante Hotel zur Tanne, welches in seiner Bauweise wirklich einer Tanne ähnelt. Es ist mit sehr schönen und bunten Schnitzereien versehen.
Geht man weiter, gelangt man zum Rathaus welches um 1300 als Kaufhaus errichtet wurde, die imposanten Fachwerkgeschosse wurden später hinzu gefügt.
In der Nähe liegt auch der Schützenbrunnen und das Tabalugahaus, ein Fachwerkhaus mit schönen Holzfiguren.
Der mittelalterliche Stadtwall von Duderstadt ist noch weit gehend erhalten und man kann rund um die Stadt gehen, innerhalb des Walls liegt die Altstadt.
Vom Wall aus - hat man einen guten Blick auf die schönen Häuser.
An vielen der Häuser sind prächtige Schnitzereien angebracht, Beispiele sind das Landsknechtshaus, das Hotel zur Tanne oder auch das Wankesche Haus.
Rund um die Markstraße sind die meisten Sehenswürdigkeiten sehr gut zu erreichen.
Am Marktplatz liegt auch das imposante Hotel Zum Löwen, das Gebäude stammt aus dem 17. Jahrhundert.
In Duderstadt gab es ein Ursulinenkloster, im 19. Jahrhundert wurde dort die mittelalterliche Kirche durch einen Neubau aus Stein ersetzt - im Stil der Neoromanik.
Bekannt ist Duderstadt auch als Standort des Weltmarktführers für Prothetik - Otto Bock.
Duderstadt gehört zum lieblichen Eichsfeld - südlichen Harzvorland.
Wer länger in Duderstadt bleiben möchte - findet viele Hotels und Pensionen, sowie viele gastfreundliche Restaurants, Kneipen und Caffees.

Manchmal hat die Rhumequelle eine blaugrüne Färbung.
Ein Besuch dieser Quelle lohnt sehr, ein sehr zauberhafter Ort.
Egal zu welcher Jahreszeit - die Rhumequelle hat immer einen konstanten Wasserstand, besonders hoch ist dieser aber im Frühjahr.
Ganz in der Nähe liegen auch die Orte Herzberg/ Harz und Bad Lauterberg, sowie Osterode/ Harz.

It is the center and capital of the northern part of the Eichsfeld (Untereichsfeld). In earlier times it was the private wealth of the Roman Catholic archbishop of Mainz.
The earliest documentary mention of Duderstadt was in 929 AD, and the city celebrates its anniversaries counting from that year.

Duderstadt ist eine Stadt im südlichen Niedersachsen. Durch seine gut erhaltene mittelalterliche Altstadt wird Duderstadt auch als Perle des Eichsfeldes bezeichnet.
Basilika St. Cyriakus und Rathaus|mini|right Duderstadt mit seinem mittelalterlichen Stadtkern ist der größte Ort im Untereichsfeld und lag während der deutschen Teilung in unmittelbarer Grenznähe - nur 200 Meter südlich des heutigen Ortsteils Gerblingerode verlief die damalige innerdeutsche Grenze. Die Grenzlage und die Trennung vom östlichen Umland über mehr als 40 Jahre hatten zur Folge, dass Duderstadt in dieser Zeit eher vor sich hinschlummerte. Mit der Grenzöffnung wuchsen jedoch sowohl Stadt als auch Umland schnell wieder mit dem östlichen Teil des Eichsfeldes zusammen, was eine positive Veränderung für Duderstadt mit sich brachte.
