Driving Around Small Town Ottawa, Illinois in 4k Video
Filmed on Friday, July 7 2023, I drive around the village Ottawa, IL to see what's going on.
Ottawa was the site of the first of the Lincoln–Douglas debates on August 21, 1858. During the Ottawa debate, Stephen A. Douglas, leader of the Democratic Party, accused Abraham Lincoln of forming a secret bipartisan group of Congressmen to bring about the abolition of slavery.
Ottawa was a major stop on the Underground Railroad because of its rail, road, and river transportation. Citizens in the city were active within the abolitionist movement.
Ottawa was also important in the development of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which terminates in LaSalle, Illinois, 12 miles to the west.
On February 8, 1910, William Dickson Boyce, then a resident of Ottawa, incorporated the Boy Scouts of America.
In 1922, the Radium Dial Company moved from Peru, Illinois to a former high school building in Ottawa. The company employed hundreds of young women who painted watch dials using a paint called Luna, which contained ionizing radiation. The young women, who had been told the paint was harmless, ingested deadly amounts of radium after being instructed to lick their paintbrushes to sharpen them. This was chronicled in the 1986 documentary Radium City.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began removing contaminated material in 1986. The work continues to this day.
Sixteen areas of Ottawa are still radioactive. The United States Department of Health and Human Services released a study, outlining areas where contamination by radium-226, as well as emissions of radon-222, are at or above normal levels. These areas include homes, public areas, schools, and even a car sales lot that is housed directly over the old Radium Dial Company site.
Because of numerous silica sand deposits, Ottawa has been a major sand and glass center for more than 100 years. One of Ottawa's largest employers is Pilkington Glass works, a plant which manufactures specialty glass and underwent a $50 million renovation in 2006. Ottawa sand continues to be extracted from several quarries in the area, and is recognized in glass-making and abrasives for its uniform granularity and characteristics.
As of the 2020 Census, there were 18,840 people living in the city.
The racial makeup of the city was 86.4% White, 2.5% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 2.5% from other races, and 7.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.5% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $53,544, and the per capita income for the city was $28,365. There were 16.8% of the population living below the poverty line.

We head out from Carbondale, IL June 2022 going east through Creal Springs, Ozark, Golconda, Elizabethtown IL before arriving at Cave in Rock, IL on the Ohio River. We see a momma and baby deer then grab luch at the state park restaurant. We learn that the 1950's Disney movie Davy Crockett and the River Pirates was filmed starring Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen which we are old enough to remember! After lunch we tour the cave which was used as a hideout from 1790's to 1840's by all sorts of reprobates including highwaymen, counterfeiters, murderers, kidnappers and river pirates the most infamous of which were Samuel Mason and Americas first recorded serial killers, the Harpe Brothers, Micajah and Wiley also known as Big and Little. Before heading home, we grab a funnel cake from the food truck at the ferry.

Hornby Lighthouse
Hornby Lighthouse, also known as South Head Lower Light or South Head Signal Station, is a heritage-listed active lighthouse located on the tip of South Head, New South Wales, Australia, a headland to the north of the suburb Watsons Bay. It marks the southern entrance to Port Jackson and Sydney Harbour, as well as lighting the South Reef, a ledge of submerged rocks It is the third oldest lighthouse in New South Wales. Designed by Mortimer Lewis and listed on the (now defunct) Register of the National Estate and on the New South Wales State Heritage Register since 2 April 1999, with the following statement of significance:
The need for a lighthouse at the entrance of Jackson Bay was made evident by the loss of two ships. First was the Dunbar, wrecked in August 1857, with the loss of 121 lives. The second was Catherine Adamson, two months later in October 1857, with a loss of twenty-one lives. The first signal station was operated close to the present site in 1790, serving as a landmark for ships to communicate their arrival to the settlement. A committee of the Light, Pilot and Navigation Board took evidence in September 1857 and recommended the construction of a 9.1-metre (30 ft) lighthouse on the inner South Head, showing a fixed white light (F.W.), although a red light was also considered.
The South Head Signal Station is a dominant Sydney landmark which appears to have been in continuous use since the 1840s as a controlling point for shipping entering and leaving Port Jackson.
A solid sandstone tower with connected watch keepers quarters built in the early 1840s and designed by the Colonial Architect Mortimer Lewis. The tower is octagonal in plan having four levels and a basement store cut 10 feet into a solid rock. The topmost level has a cantilevered iron and timber catwalk and the metal pitched roof is surmounted by an observation fleche. Decoration is minimal but the form of the shaft with simple stepping, string courses and small panel oval and square windows is typical of restrained Colonial Georgian building work. It was also reported that the government stores already had a catoptric lens apparatus available that has been purchased in 1853.
The wing for staff quarters in an I plan with enclosed verandahs either side. This building probably c. 1850s building having very good ashlar work to external walls with each elevation recessed within a frame of foundation, eaves and quoin mouldings. Windows are marked by simple classical sill and lintel mouldings. The hipped roofs originally of slate are now sheeted in asbestos cement. A good timber picket fence encloses the property which is in good condition and well maintained
