In March 1966, the committee of specialists gave the go-ahead for an integrated atomic bomb and missile test launch.
At 9 am, on October the 27th, 1966, a nuclear-armed Dongfeng 2 missile took to the sky. Nine minutes and 14 seconds later, at a distance 894 kilometres away from the launch site, the nuclear warhead exploded, 569 metres above its target in Lop Nor. China now possessed nuclear weapons, and the means of deploying them.
That same year, China established a strategic missile force – the 2nd artillery corps.
