Road Trip #519 - LA-18 West - Gretna/Harvey/Marrero

Road Trip #519 - Louisiana Highway 18 West - Gretna/Harvey/Marrero

Louisiana Highway 18 (LA 18) is a state highway that serves Ascension, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, and Jefferson Parishes. Called the Great River Road, it runs from west to east, parallel to the west bank of the Mississippi River, running from Donaldsonville to Gretna. It spans a total of 79.7 miles (128.3 km). In the more rural parts of LA 18's span, it is commonly referred to as River Road, but it becomes 4th Street once it enters Westwego. Between the junction with LA 52 in Luling and Huey P. Long Avenue in downtown Gretna, LA 18 is largely the original routing of U.S. Highway 90 (also LA 2 before the 1955 renumbering) and before that, the Old Spanish Trail highway.

The 5 Most Poverty-Stricken Cities in the U.S.

Dreamers come from all over the world to the United States to try to achieve their version of the American Dream. This concept is something that is sold to us - work hard, follow the rules, and one day, you too can have a home, family and happiness. But in some parts of America, that's about impossible. The cycle of poverty makes it hard for the people who live in these communities to climb up the socioeconomic ladder. In this video, we're uncovering the five communities with the highest poverty rates in the country.

The Best Ever tour of America's Deep South. Part 1 of 4

Margaret and Derek join a coach tour to the fascinating world of 'Deep South', birthplace of some of the world's most original artists and their Jazz, Blues and Country music. In Part 1 they arrive in Atlanta, Georgia and travel on to Chattanooga in Tennessee. They visit the Martin Luther King Centre, CNN Building, Centennial Olympic Park, and the Cyclorama. In Chattanooga they stay at the Choo Choo Hotel, see Ross's Landing, Rock City, Lookout Mountain, the Incline Railway and finally the Hotel's remarkable Model Railroad.

Sunshine Bridge northbound

Completed in 1964, the Sunshine Bridge was the first bridge built across the river between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. It was conceived as part of a much larger plan to build a toll expressway that would connect New Orleans with Lafayette, bypassing Baton Rouge altogether. This plan, known as the “Acadian Thruway” fell out of favor following passage of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 and the subsequent creation of the I-10 corridor, and the bridge is the only part of this plan that came to fruition.

The bridge carries four lanes of Highway 70 as it connects the town of Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish with US 61 and I-10 on the East Bank. The mile and a half-long bridge features a central truss structure that is 3,300 ft long and its longest individual main spans are 825 ft apiece. Its unusual 4 tower, 5-span structure gives the bridge an unmistakable and immediately recognizable appearance.

The bridge’s name is a nod to music star and politician Jimmie Davis, who served as the 47th Governor of Louisiana and was in office at the time of the bridge’s construction. Davis rose to fame in 1940 with his hit song “You Are My Sunshine” and after declining an offer to name the bridge in his honor, it was named “Sunshine Bridge” as a reference to his popular song. So interestingly, we have a bridge here named for the title of a song, instead of being named for a person or geographic feature.
