Doesburg | Travel Video | To The Far Far Away
A little getaway closer to home this time around. We went to hometown Doesburg, a picturesque Hansa town on the River IJssel. Doesburg is an old fortified city steeped in history and is great for some exploring! Walking around the city centre you will find medieval streets, magnificent architecture and nice little stores and restaurants.

Wenn man über die IJsselbrücke in die Stadt hineinfährt, hat man das Gefühl in ein anderes Zeitalter zu reisen. Es gibt nur wenige Städte in den Niederlanden, die so gut erhalten geblieben sind, wie die alte Hansestadt Doesburg.
Das mittelalterliche Straßennetz ist noch vollkommen erhalten und mehr als 150 Gebäude in der Innenstadt stehen unter Denkmalschutz. Sie erzählen von Doesburgs reicher Vergangenheit: Schon 1237 und damit 60 Jahre vor Amsterdam erhielt Doesburg die Stadtrechte. Darauf sind die Einwohner noch heute stolz. 1447 trat die Stadt dann dem deutschen Hanseverbund bei. Der von dieser Zeit geprägte Stadtkern wurde schon mehrfach als Kulisse für Kinofilme genutzt.

Grocery shopping in the Netherlands is always a treat.
I very much enjoy going to the grocery store, maybe more then I should and with this video I wanted to shed a bit of light of how grocery stores in the Netherlands stand out form other countries. There are many surprising finds and interesting in-tell about the culture.
As for recommendations the video suggests a lot of classics, feel free to share other suggestions! (lidl mozzarella salad is pretty good)
I was also informed that Marqt does not produce profit! which was quite surprising since it s one the more expensive range.
Also let me know if some things only I experienced, maybe some things depend on the region…?

Exploring the Netherlands - 4K Cinematic Footage of Doesburg with Relaxing Music
Doesburg is positioned along the Oude IJssel and Gelderse IJssel, which made Doesburg an important fortified city for a long time. The fortification of the city made Doesburg an important economic and administrative city. The Martinikerk (main church) is 94 meters tall. For various reasonsrelated to the IJssel decreasing in depth, the prosperity in Doesburg settled after the 15th century. Doesburg changed into a sleepy provincial town and so it would remain until after the Second World War. The city was protected in 1974, designated as a historic town.
As Doesburg was officially a fortified city up to 1923, town extension was not possible. After the Second World War, the city was rapidly extended. Throughout the years, various boroughs were built. In the beginning of the 21st century, the construction of a new area at the IJsselkade was started with 44 houses and 124 apartments designed by Adolfo Natalini (an Italian architect).

Tijdens mijn bezoek van afgelopen zaterdag 4 december was ik ook bij een tweetal musea, te weten de Roode Tooren en het Mosterdmuseum.

The Historic Market of Veere | Netherlands - Seas The Day (Ep42)
Thank you to Anita from @OmaFarAway for the fantastic recommendation of us visiting the beautiful Dutch town of Veere, only 40 minutes away from us We haven’t been lucky enough to visit much of this area before due to the flying visits, but this time, we changed that. We hope to do much more exploring of this stunning area whilst we're here.
We were warned by Anita that this is a very touristy town and so to avoid the town centre car parks due to their high prices, and gave us a tip off of a free car park only a short walk from town. Great car park, very busy and so some of a neighbouring field was opened up for cars too. Also has spaces for camper vans and other larger vehicles. We didn't mind the walk into town as it had saved us an extortionate €5.60 an hour!!! And I thought the south of England was expensive.
As we walked along the road to the town centre we came across a beautiful bric a brac shop and a wonderful sweet shop, until we got up close and it just smelled of liquorice which we are not big fans of at all. Needless to say, we didn’t stop by. Town was very busy and we wandered through the streets, taking in all the old buildings from the 16th century. Veere is only a tiny town and we wanted to head to the market place located in the town centre, we’d read that there was some beautiful architecture around this square, and also that it was home to the museum which was a beautiful historic building. When we got there, to our surprise, the town was holding their monthly (only during the summer) historic market. Such beautiful smells wafting from the stalls selling everything from handmade baskets to clogs turned into bird feeders. It was beautiful, and we are so glad our timing coincidentally right as it was something not to be missed. This did however, mean the town was heaving! Defiantly no space for a coffee but we did find some delicious Dutch treats and decided to have those whilst overlooking the marina.
This town also holds a lot of history, it was first founded in 1281 and held strong connections to trade in Scotland. There is a fascinating tunnel going under a river that was used in Napoleonic times, and although we couldn’t go inside (without paying €10 each to see the art exhibition) the churches architecture was extremely interesting.
I know, we say this ALL the time, but if you are ever in South Holland, this is a must see place. So far top on my small list of places we’ve seen in this fascinating country.
PS – Anita says those apple things are Appel Beignets and the doughy balls we had in the town are Oliebollen which are like slightly less sweet donuts with currents and icing sugar.
