ONE DAY IN DINKELSBÜHL (GERMANY) | 4K UHD | Discover a beautiful historic old town
If you have already seen a few videos of me, you might have noticed that I like historical old towns as well as modern cityscapes. And if you share share my enthusiasm for historic old towns with me, then let me take you to Dinkelsbühl with my video.
You’ve never heard about Dinkelsbühl? I 'm not surprised. I live in Germany, but I did not know Dinkelsbühl either. Until that day in September 2019, when I set out with two friends to discover Dinkelsbühl. And it was worth it.
Dinkelsbühl is a beautiful Bavarian town in the district of Ansbach in Middle Franconia and is one of the most picturesque old towns in Germany. The more than 800 years old exceptionally well preserved late medieval townscape (which is preserved in an almost original state) has many rows of colorful half-timbered houses, a towering church, old fortifications and gates and a completely preserved city wall.
I was very impressed and tried to capture the townscape and atmosphere and express it in my video.

Germany is a country rich in history and culture. Some of its top attractions include the Reichstag building, the Cologne Cathedral, and the Berlin Wall. The Reichstag building is a beautiful example of German architecture, and it's home to the German parliament, the Bundestag.
The Cologne Cathedral is a stunning Gothic church that is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. The Berlin Wall was a symbol of the Cold War, and it is now a popular spot for tourists to take photos. There are many other wonderful places to visit in Germany, and this is just a small sampling of what the country has to offer.
The first known settlers in the area of modern-day Germany were the Celts, who arrived in the region around 1000 BC. The Roman Empire eventually conquered the Celtic territory, and Germanic tribes began to settle in the area in the 4th century AD.
The Holy Roman Empire was formed in 962 AD, and would eventually become one of the most powerful empires in European history. The empire reached its height under Charlemagne, who was crowned emperor in 800 AD. However, the empire began to decline in the 10th century, and eventually fell apart in 1806.
In 1871, Germany became a united nation-state under the leadership of Otto von Bismarck. The country rapidly industrialized in the late 19th century, and became a major European power. However, Germany's ambitions led to conflict in 1914, and the country was involved in World War I.
Germany was defeated in 1918, and the Treaty of Versailles placed strict limitations on the German military. This led to growing resentment amongst the German people, and in 1933 Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power.
Under Hitler's leadership, Germany became a totalitarian state and began a program of expansionism that led to World War II. The war ended with Germany's defeat in 1945, and the country was occupied by Allied forces.
Germany began to rebuild in the 1950s and became a major economic power once again. The country was also reunited in 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today, Germany is one of the leading nations of the European Union and is a major player on the world stage.

Dinkelsbuhl • named Most Beautiful Village of Germany
About Dinkelsbuhl
Dinkelsbühl has been named “the most beautiful village of Germany”. And it might very well be. It is a stunning, small village with exquisite half-timbered architecture. Located along the Romantic Road in Bavaria, just like Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nördlingen. Those three cities and villages - Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen - are the only three cities in Germany with the entire original city wall still in tact.
It is a former Free Imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire (HRE). That is the Empire erected after Rome collapsed and the middle ages had set in. The HRE is a complicated governmental structure of rivalling regions, city states, countries, kings and barons. Its founder Charlemagne (Charles The Great) had his seat in Germany too: in the city of Aachen (near the border with The Netherlands and Belgium).
This fortified village once was a city. Small, but important. And just like so many towns in those days: they all had their own characteristic “look & feel”, whereas today cities around the world all look the same.
Nearby Rothenburg ob der Tauber is larger, has more big buildings and towers and steeples. Rothenburg has houses in every color of the spectrum, many city towers with gates. Nördlingen, also nearby Dinkelsbühl, has largely white plastered houses. All very straight lines. Organised in a near perfect city wall circle. Dinkelsbühl has a village feel, but with clear signs of important families having lived there. German renaissance wooden architecture. Intricate half-timbered faces towards the streets. A wall and quaint garden all around this beautiful village.
The movie “The wonderful world of the Brothers Grimm” from 1962 was filmed here.
This video was filmed during “Pinksteren” festival. Or in English: Pentecost. A Christian holiday taking place on the 50th day after Easter Sunday. A holiday also celebrated in The Netherlands, Belgium and other countries on the continent. In Dinkelsbühl this is celebrated by turning the entire town into an open air festival of traditional costume and music. From neighbouring towns, groups come to Dinkelsbühl to showcase the wonderful German traditional garments.
Nearby tourist destinations include:
1. Rothenburg ob der Tauber: perhaps the most German of all German cities. And the inspiration for Anime and Disney. A must see when visiting Germany / Bavaria
2. Nördlingen: a city in the middle of a meteor crater. The old town has been made from the diamond-dust stone of the meteor. This city is literally a Gem: made of star dust.
3. Romantic Road: aka Romantische Strasse. A wonderful route that many tourist bike and tour across Bavaria. Stunning views of the wonderful German architecture, from Würzburg in the north of Bavaria all the way to castle Neuschwanstein in the south near the Austrian border.
4. Larger cities “away from the romantic road”: Nuremberg, Heidelberg, Bamberg

Germany Road Trip: Magical Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Dinkelsbühl
Welcome back to our Germany Road Trip travel vlog series through Bavaria, Germany, our 29th country on our round the world trip! Our road trip brought us to the magical town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Rothenburg is known as the Fairytale Town of Germany and has the Instagram posts to prove it!
After waking up before dawn to soak up the town before the crowds, we explore the gorgeous little town including the medieval walls and Rothenburg Christmas Market stalls. We captured a special moment in front of Plönlein and watched a stunning rainbow arching over Rothenburg in the early hours of the morning. It truly felt like we were living a fairytale!
Next, we drove over to Dinkelsbuhl for an evening at the most local-feeling market we’ve seen yet! If you love half-timbered German buildings, then this town has plenty for you to see!

Before we went home we stayed a couple of nights in Vellberg (south Germany). From there we visited Dinkelsbühl.
Dinkelsbühl is a historic town in Central Franconia, a region of Germany that is now part of the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany. Dinkelsbühl is a former free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In local government terms, Dinkelsbühl lies near the western edge of the Landkreis (or local government district) of Ansbach, north of Aalen.
Dinkelsbühl lies on the northern part of the Romantic Road, and is one of three particularly striking historic towns on the northern part of the route, the others being Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nördlingen.
The town lies on the southern edge of the Franconian Heights and on the River Wörnitz, which rises in the town of Schillingsfürst. The population is about 14.000.

An incomparable experience and a travel to medieval times in Bavaria, Germany.
An almost unspoilt townscape dating back over 400 years, mighty churches, proud patrician houses and enchanting semi-timbered houses make Dinkelsbühl, “one of the closely packed and best preserved medieval towns in Germany”, according to art historians. Today, the Gothic Minster of St. George, one of South Germany’s most impressive hall churches, still dominates an old-town ensemble of particular beauty.
