Galiat village is the largest and at the same time perfectly preserved archeological complex in the mountains of North Ossetia. Probably, it is the highest mountain complex of this scale in the world! It is located in the Digora Gorge on the bank of the Komidon River, 115 kilometers from the capital of the republic, Vladikavkaz.
When exactly the village of Galiat was founded is difficult to say ... But judging by the results of the study of archeological findings from the numerous graves around the settlement, it can be assumed that people lived on the site of the village as early as the Bronze Age, about three thousand years before Christ!
In the Middle Ages, Galiat flourished ... it was a large and rich settlement, which could well be called a town. About three hundred and fifty households, were more than five thousand people lived. Indeed, the village was located directly on the Great Chinese Silk Road, and as a result, trade and various crafts flourished here.
Archeologists claim that Galiat had a sewage system and water supply system even back then.
To this day, walking through the ancient settlement, you can see the remains of unique multi-storey buildings and defense towers, built of almost untreated stones. It looks simply epic!
The first floor is a barn where livestock was kept and grain was stored, people lived on the second and third floors, and the top floor was used for military purposes.
Ethnographers believe that the name of the village comes from the name of one of its founders, a native of Alagir Gorge, Galayon Gavis.
Although Galiat looks more like an open-air architectural museum, people still live here.
At the moment, of the permanent residents, there are three farms, and a few more families come for the summer.
There is electricity, television, cell phone connection and internet. There is cleanest and tastiest, but really cold water from local sources… but here the list of advantages of civilization ends.
No pharmacy, no first aid station, no store... The nearest first aid station and grocery store are in Matsuta village.
People live from agriculture and cattle breeding. They raise cows, horses, poultry... they grow the most ecological potatoes in the world...
On the street we met a big dog …
As it turned out later, Bagheera alabai is the faithful companion of one of the local residents, George ..., or Zhorik, as the villagers call him.
It is said that in a previous, simple life, George was diagnosed with an incurable, fatal disease ... the doctors predicted his imminent death ... But instead of waiting at home for inevitable death, George decided to leave the city and move to his ancestral home in Digora Canyon. And since then, he has lived in Galiat for more than ten years ... he is alive and well. George's family - Alabai Bagheera and the horse Dur Dur. He walks barefoot both in summer and winter, prepares firewood for winter, grows potatoes ... And he has already forgotten his illness ... he has not caught a single cold in all this time!

This is our last tour through the mountains of North Ossetia. In conclusion, we are going to the most far location of North Ossetia, but probably the most beautiful one… Digora gorge.
Digora gorge is located in the Urukh river basin, 120 kilometers from Vladikavkaz.
It should be noted that Ossetians are generally divided into three sub-ethnic groups: the Digors, the Irons and the Kudars. So, Digora gorge is the main place of residence - Ossetian-Digors.
After almost two hours of driving we reached the settlement of Chicola, one of the four largest villages of Digoria, and the administrative center of the district. The other three are Digora, Dur-Dur and Lesken.
The Akhsinta gorge is the deepest gorge in North Ossetia
In Ossetia there are two monuments to Dzuar Uastyrdzhi - the most influential celestial body of the Ossetian pantheon. I have already remembered one of them, standing at the very beginning of Alagir Gorge, the link to the video is in the description, the second monument, also on a horseback, though smaller, but definitely not less significant, can be found here, in Digora Gorge, just four kilometers from the Devil’s bridge over Akhsinta Gorge, which we have just visited.
The monument is made of bronze and was erected in 2015 on the highest rock above the Urukh River.
The weight of the monument is 13 tons, the height is six meters. The author of the sculptural composition is a well-known Ossetian sculptor, Sosyev Vladimir Borisovich.
So, Digora gorge is the northern part of the main Caucasus mountain range, Iraf district, Urukh river basin. By the way, the Urukh is the largest river in Digoria... Its length is 104 kilometers. Translated from Ossetian language Urukh meaning Wide.
Since the Digora Gorge is the farthest from the republic capital Vladikavkaz - 120 kilometers - the way here is a bit more backbreaking than, for example, to the Tsey Gorge, but it's definitely worth it! Amazing beautiful views, many impressive monuments of Ossetian history - high settlements, towers, crypts...
Interestingly, as a native of Vladikavkaz who lived in Ossetia until the age of 27, I never bothered to visit Digora Gorge. Precisely because it is so far from the capital of the republic. It was the first, very bright and impressive acquaintance with the amazing corner of North Ossetia - Digora Gorge.
MATSUTA village
In Matsuta village we went to the last store on our way ... further there will be no such opportunities to buy cookies and ice cream ...
The name of the village Matsuta in the Ossetian language means Go no further According to one version, this name is due to the fact that in the 18th century there was a plague epidemic, as a result of which the population of Ossetia decreased sharply.
Here there was a quarantine post, beyond which it was strictly forbidden to go ...
Here you can admire another interesting art object, The arrows of the Nart Soslan, based on one of the episodes of the Nart epic ...
By the way, in the village of Matsuta there is an old tomb where, according to legend, the famous Nart Soslan was buried. Of course, one can be skeptical about this fact, but in 1880 Professor Vsevolod Miller, a world-famous archeologist, actually found in this tomb the remains of the skeleton of a huge man ... Makes you think, doesn't it?
Immediately behind the crypt of Soslan a monument to the Ossetian warriors who died in World War II was erected.

And we continue traveling ... along the picturesque roads of the Digora mountainous. The next stop is the village of Fasnal.
Fasnal village is located at the confluence of the Sardidon and Songutidon rivers, 40 km from the regional center of Chikola and 105 km from Vladikavkaz city.
There is a rich deposit of lead-zinc ores near Fasnal. In 1893, Belgian specialists built a mining and processing plant under an agreement with the Tsarist government.
The construction of the plant was entrusted to Karase Gabuev, a well-known builder in Ossetia, and his brothers.
The New Factory was equipped with the most advanced equipment for the time: numerous electromechanical systems that replaced manual labor. There was electric lighting and telephone connections. It was very bright in the workshops because the roof was made of thick, unbreakable glass .
By the way, Fasnal Mining and Processing Plant can be rightly called one of the most advanced and modern enterprises not only in Russia, but in the whole world!
Unfortunately, due to the riots that broke out in Russia in 1905, which later turned into a revolution, the work of the plant was first interrupted and then finally stopped. Local residents stole the equipment, a school was opened in the office building, and the workers' dormitory was turned into a hospital ...
in 1917 they tried to demolish the building, but without success, because the walls proved to be very strong ... They say that Karase Gabuev added sour milk whey to the solution.
Today only the walls of the Belgian factory remain, which is used by locals mainly as a cattle shed.
However, what remains of the once unique factory to this day looks very picturesque and always attracts the attention of tourists. Locals call the ruins of the factory the Digora Coliseum.

Поездка во Владикавказ открыла удивительный регион! В окружении гор там лихо гоняют на Ладах, крадут невест, поют песню Гио Пика про “мой город” и одновременно едят в роскошных дорогих ресторанах, модно одеваются, ходят в Мариинский театр. А кое-что связывает кавказскую глубинку с Парижем и Барселоной. Главные достопримечательности сосредоточены на Проспекте Мира и в горах. А ещё река Терек! Мы нашли самые вкусные осетинские пироги, самый сочный шашлык, хорошие рестораны и отель мирового уровня, выяснили, как дела с экологией и почему люди рады закрытию завода, разыскали дом, в котором жил Булгаков, контору, куда “сдают” рога и копыта. А в горы отправились в сторону Фиагдона через Дзивгис с осетинским храмом, древними захоронениями и наскальной - нет, не живописью - а неприступной крепостью. Увидели как добывают воду Тбау, обнаружили памятник Сталину и окунулись в термальную воду.

The village of Kamunta is the highest mountain village in North Ossetia! It is located in the Digorsky Gorge at an altitude of 1934 meters above sea level.
They named the village in honor of one of the first people who settled in this area ... And his name was Kamun.
Scientists trace the origin of the ancient settlement Kamunta to the late Bronze Age - that is about one and a half millennia before Christ.
Just imagine that! One and a half thousand years before Christ! Therefore, when you walk through the narrow, rocky streets of the village, you are seized by an inexplicable excitement... You have the feeling of standing on the edge of a precipice, on the steep slope of the rock of time, and looking suspiciously into the swirling darkness of world history...
A thousand and a half years before the birth of Christ lived a simple man... Ossetian... Alan... his name was Kamun... Almost four thousand years have passed, and his name still lives... is not it a miracle?!
Once upon a time, in the early days of Alans, Kamunta flourished... For the village was located directly on one of the most important trade routes between China and Russia, on the famous Great Silk Road.
According to our guide Alan, the road that runs along the opposite slope of the gorge is part of the former Great Silk Road.
Around the village there are numerous burial sites, where archeologists have found a large number of jewelry of the Alan tribal nobility, ceramics, coins, and so on.
At present, only 16 people live in Kamunta. However, on holidays due visits of guests and relatives, this number increases to 27.
Another interesting fact is that Kamunta village is listed in the Russian Book of Records as a record holder, as on May 9, 2016 the Immortal Regiment parade took place in Kamunta. The staff of the book recorded the highest mountain procession of the Immortal Regiment in Russia.
And we climb to the top of the mountain where the village of Kamunta is located. About 2,000 meters above sea level. Locals call this place the Dog Rock.
The Dog Rock is a rocky outlier that stands on the very edge of a cliff. In ancient times, criminals sentenced to death were thrown from this rock. Such execution was considered the most humane. Moreover, the execution of the sentence was always entrusted to the relatives of the offender, in order to exclude a blood feud with the executors.
Why was the rock called a dog? No, not because it looks like a dog ... literally translated from Ossetian, it sounds like A place to throw dogs ... And if you consider that people usually call criminals lousy dogs - everything immediately becomes their place ...
It is clear that in Ossetia there was more than one such rock with a similar name.
However, it should be noted that such a cruel punishment was not often used, but only for very serious crimes. In Ossetia the following were considered as such ...

Фильм-влог с впечатлениями от нашей первой автомобильной поездки в Северную Осетию из Москвы. Это было незабываемо, это было круто!

Я очень долго работал над этим фильмом... поездка состоялась летом 2020-го года, фильм я выложил 3 года спустя. Но с тех пор мало что изменилось... Изменилось, конечно, много чего, но горы Кавказа - все те же горы Кавказа; ущелья Осетии все так же красивы и величественны.
До ковида в летний отпуск мы обычно ездили на море - чаще всего в Испанию, в окрестности Валенсии ( а тем летом море вдруг оказалось закрыто. Как только свернули карантинные ограничения на перемещения внутри страны, мы рванули к бабушке во Владикавказ.
Машина - это свобода перемещения, и мы воспользовались этой свободой в полной мере. Поездка в гостевой дом в Задалеске ( стала открытием нового мира - изначально мы ехали на пару ночей, но в итоге провели в горах пять дней. И с удовольствием задержались бы там на дольше, если бы не надо было возвращаться в Москву.
Самым захватывающим стало путешествие в горные селения Камунта и Галиат. Дигорское ущелье невероятно красиво - за каждым новым изгибом дороги можно останавливаться на час-два - картинки меняются, но остаются неизменно красивыми. И чем выше поднимаешься, тем в более космических декорациях оказываешься. От этих видов дух захватывает - кажется, это что-то из кино, в обычной жизни такой красоты просто не может быть.
Конечная точка путешествия и, вместе с этим, эмоциональная кульминация - Галиат. Это древнее селение высоко-высоко в горах. Говорят, когда-то через него проходил знаменитый Шелковый путь. В центре - каменная башня, напоминающая превращенные в музеи замки где-нибудь в горах Италии. Только это не музей - здесь живут люди, ведут хозяйство, держат коров, разводят кур... Вокруг экспонатов нет ограждений, можно снять здесь комнаты на пару дней и спокойно облазить и изучить все эти склоны.
В этой поездке я заболел горами. И Осетия стала восприниматься иначе - захотелось бывать там по нескольку раз в год. И обязательно выбираться в горы! После этого мы побывали и в других местах - в Тана-парке и Дзинаге в том же Дигорском ущелье, в Верхнем Згиде в Алагирском ущелье, в Цее. Но это автомобильное путешествие было первым, и потому оно остается особенным.
Если вы живете или просто бывали в Осетии - надеюсь, вам будет приятно увидеть знакомые места. А если нет, обязательно постарайтесь там побывать - этот опыт станет незабываемым!
