NETHERLANDS: Deventer city
Deventer is one the oldest towns in the Netherlands.
In medieval times Deventer was a very important and wealthy city. Her wealth was mostly thanks to trade along the river IJssel.
Many of the buildings erected in those profitable days still remain.
One of thoose buildings is De Waag (1528), a monumental building that now accomodates the Historical Museum Deventer and the Tourist Information Office. It is located on the edge of the market square De Brink.
'De Brink' has houses, shops, and cafes dating from 1575-1900.
Deventer was a member of the Hanseatic League, an economic alliance of trading cities and their guilds that dominated trade along the coast of Northern Europe in the later Middle Ages.
Deventer has its own Leaning Tower of Pisa, the building 'De Waag' leans over quite a lot.
During the production of the movie A Bridge Too Far all of the scenes taking place in nearby Arnhem were filmed in Deventer - as Arnhem itself had lost its historic center.

Deventer. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. A Hanseatic city on the river IJssel. Everywhere in the old city centre, buildings are often centuries old. Here you often see cut windows and ornaments in the shape of a gable stone. Do you like old cities, buildings and / or history of is Deventer really something for you.
Deventer has a monumental center. The center of the center is the Brink. An elongated market square with trees and terraces. It is surrounded by several monumental buildings. Here is still the old daredevil building De Waag. It was still in use until 1862. A beautiful late Gothic building with ornaments. Nowadays it is a museum.
Pennickshuis is a beautiful old renaissance building on the Brink. Around 1588 the merchant Herman Penninck commissioned the construction of this showpiece facade, which was to reflect his wealth and literacy. The 6 statues above the entrance door represent the 6 virtues (faith, hope, love, prudence, strength and moderation). Today, the tourist office is located there. It also gives access to a hidden church of the Baptist.
Deventer Cook Shop. On the corner of Pennickshuis. A point of sale of the famous cake from the city.
Lebuïnus Church. The most famous church of the city. And for a long time the main church. A large church with a tower dome. Against the church is still the ruin of the Old Church of Mary.Tip: Climb the tower. The narrow spiral staircase consists of 220 steps. From the highest point you have a beautiful view over Deventer.
Opposite the church building the Grote Kerkhof is the town hall of Deventer. It is a building from the 17th century. The official wedding hall of the municipality of Deventer is located in the town hall. The building on the left. In the central hall, in collaboration with an artist, a series of gratings have been designed for the oak frames windows: 2,264 unique fingerprints of 2,264 Deventers were cast in aluminium. Spread over the outer and inner facades of the building, they form one large work of art: A beautiful sight.
Oldest stone house. On the corner of Sandrasteeg you will find 'De Proosdij', the oldest stone civil house in the Netherlands. The lower part of the wall dates from the year 900. The oldest stone house in the Netherlands is privately occupied.
Everyone feels young again in the Toys Museum. Plenty of fun and lots of recognition when you see your favourite toys from your childhood.
Bergkwartier. A medieval part of town with restored houses and shops. Stroll through the old small streets. Here is also the most famous street of Deventer. Walstraat. Sightseeings: Mountain Church, Coin Tower, the Synagogue
Noordenbergkwartier the oldest part of the city. Sightseeings: Town hall complex, Grote of Lebuinuskerk, Oude Mariakerk, Oudste Stenen Woonhuis, Latin School, Klooster, Stadsarchief & Athenaeum Library, Stenenwal and Noordenberg tower.
Harbour area. In and around the harbour area are several places to eat, drink and relax.
IJssel. Take the ferry across the IJssel. Only for foot passengers or cyclists. Sit down on one of the many benches on the quay. In the summer there is a city beach across the street. A fine lawn to enjoy. There is a kiosk.
Davo city brewery. Just outside the center it is good to stay here. Both inside and on the terrace large picnic tables. Plenty of choice of home-brewed beer. There are also other drinks and a small menu. Cheers.
Deventer has some nationally known events. Deventer book market. Every first Sunday in August. It is the largest book market in Europe. Dickens Festijn in the Old Town is largely decorated in 19th century style and is populated by characters from the stories of Charles Dickens. The walkway really contributes to the atmosphere

Deventer was probably founded around AD 768 by the English missionary Lebuinus, who built a wooden church on the east bank of the river IJssel. In January 772 the sack and burning of this church by a Saxon expedition was the cause for the first punitive war waged by Charlemagne to the Saxons, in which, in retribution, the Irminsul (the Saxon sacred tree, probably near modern Paderborn) was destroyed. This was not the first human settlement at the location; between 1981 and 2006, remains of a Bronze Age settlement (dated to c.400 AD) were excavated at Colmschate, 4 km east of the current city.

The village of Deventer, already important because of a trading road crossing the river IJssel, was looted and burnt down by the Vikings in 882. It was immediately rebuilt and fortified with an earthen wall (in the street Stenen Wal remains of this wall have been excavated and restored).
Deventer received city rights in 956, after which fortifications were built or replaced by stone walls around the city for defense. Between 1000 and 1500, Deventer grew to be a flourishing trade city because of its harbour on the river IJssel, which was capable of accommodating large ships. The city eventually joined the Hanseatic League.
One of the commodities it traded in, dried haddock and cod from Norway, gave the citizens the nickname they carry to this day: Deventer Stokvis In the 15th century, Deventer had a common mint, where coins for the three IJssel cities Deventer, Zwolle, and Kampen were made.
Deventer is the birthplace of Geert Groote and home to his Brethren of the Common Life, a school of religious thought that influenced Thomas a Kempis and Erasmus in later times. Together with Haarlem it was among the first cities to have printing presses, dating back to as early as 1477. From around 1300, it also housed a Latin School, which became internationally renowned, and remained in service in changing forms until 1971. Its most well-known was the scholar Desiderius Erasmus, who was born in 1466 and attended the school from 1475 to 1484.
