we visit a rat temple in INDIA The Karni Mata Temple, aka The Rat Temple is definitely one of the most unique places we have visited in India.
Although it might sound hard to believe but we actually enjoyed walking around the temple with thousands of rats next to us. Its definitely the idea of it that puts people off, but in reality its actually a lot of fun.
Bikaner was a last minute decision to include in our India Itinerary but we are glad we did. We want to say thanks to Prince Haveli B&B for hosting us. If you come to Bikaner, Prince Haveli's is the best place to stay.

In this one day Bikaner sightseeing tour I visited four known Bikaner Tourist places :
1) Karni Mata Temple :
A Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata at Deshnoke, 30 km from Bikaner, in Rajasthan, India. It is also known as the Temple of Rats. The temple is famous for the approximately 25,000 black rats that live, and are revered, in the temple.
2) Kote Gate Bikaner :
Kote Gate is the entry point that would lead you to lots of beautiful havelis, the most notable of them being Rampuria Havelis. There are 5 Havelis which together form the set of Rampuria Havelis. The Architecture is absolutely splendid.

3) Junagarh Fort :
In the city of Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. The fort was originally called Chintamani and was renamed Junagarh or Old Fort in the early 20th century when the ruling family moved to Lalgarh Palace outside the fort limits.
4) National Research Centre On Camel :
The center has been identified as one of the important tourist place of Bikaner and is included in the tourist book. The tourist visiting the canter can see the camel of different breeds and their behaviour. Camel milk parlour is a special attraction because it vendors unique value added camel milk products like ice-cream, hot and cold beverages. Every year thousands of Foreign and Indian Tourists visit the center.

We started our day at Bikaner by visiting Junagarh fort, there after enjoyed local sweets. Visited Karni Mata temple, popularly known as temple where you get to see thousands of rats.
We spent 2 days at Bikaner and virtually explored all the famous food and travel destinations including camel research centre and more. Details of the places visited by us is given below:

Bikaner is situated in the middle of the Thar desert and has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh) with very little rainfall and extreme temperatures. In summer temperatures can exceed 48 °C, and during the winter they may dip below freezing.
Karni Mata Temple (Hindi: करणी माता मंदिर) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata at Deshnoke, 30 km from Bikaner, in Rajasthan, India. It is also known as the Temple of Rats.
The temple is famous for the approximately 25,000 black rats and a few white rats (which are rarest to be seen) that live, and are revered, in the temple. These holy rats are considered as Depawat Charanas in previous birth, these both take birth in a cycle of humans and mice respectively. Many people travel great distances to pay their respects.
Junagarh Fort is a fort in the city of Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. The fort was originally called Chintamani and was renamed Junagarh or Old Fort in the early 20th century when the ruling family moved to Lalgarh Palace outside the fort limits. It is one of the few major forts in Rajasthan which is not built on a hilltop.

India Deshnok Karni Mata Temple
Karni Mata Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata at Deshnoke, 30 km from Bikaner, in Rajasthan, India. It is also known as the Temple of Rats.
The temple is famous for the approximately 25,000 black rats that live, and are revered, in the temple. These holy rats are called kabbas, and many people travel great distances to pay their respects. The temple draws visitors from across the country for blessings, as well as curious tourists from around the world.
Legend has it that Laxman, son of Karni Mata , drowned in a pond in Kapil Sarovar in Kolayat Tehsil while he was attempting to drink from it. Karni Mata implored Yama, the god of death, to revive him. First refusing, Yama eventually relented, permitting Laxman and all of Karni Mata's male children to be reincarnated as rats.
Eating food that has been nibbled on by the rats is considered to be a high honour. If one of them is killed, it must be replaced with another one made of solid silver.
The building was completed in its current form in the early 20th century in the late Mughal style by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner.
In front of the temple is a beautiful marble facade, which has solid silver doors built by Maharaja Ganga Singh. Across the doorway are more silver doors with panels depicting the various legends of the Goddess. The image of the Goddess is enshrined in the inner sanctum.
Out of all of the thousands of rats in the temple, there are a few white rats, which are considered to be especially holy. They are believed to be the manifestations of Karni Mata herself and her four sons. Sighting them is a special blessing and visitors put in extensive efforts to bring them forth, offering prasad, a sweet holy food. There is not any case of any disease being spread by the rats to date.
The temple is opened to the public early in the morning at 04:00. Charan priests perform Mangla-Ki-Aarti and offer bhog (special food) in worship. Devotees make offerings to the rats, which roam about the temple in large numbers and are considered auspicious. Offerings include cheese and sweets. There are also bowls of milk around the temple for the rats to enjoy. There are two kinds of offerings made: the 'dwar-bhent' is attributed to the priests and the workers, while the 'kalash-bhent' is utilized for the temple maintenance and development.
Many worshipers believe the rats' saliva has healing properties and will share food and milk with the rats. A major speaking point for the temple is that is was around before the bubonic plague.
