Ugliest Cities in the UK – Londonderry
Today, we shall continue our exploration of the ugliest cities in the UK. And this takes us nowhere else but Londonderry. No, we’re not doing a rundown of the county. We’re only focusing on a city there. Many people say Londonderry is ugly. We wanted to see how true their assertions are. Our diligent fact-checking of all that’s in the public domain about this county shows that Derry has features that bring it close to the rank of the ugliest city in the UK. We’re going to share our findings with you in this video for your consideration and observation. As you enjoy it, please don’t forget to tell us what you feel about Derry in the comment section.
The County Londonderry
County Londonderry is one of the 6 counties of Northern Ireland, the 9 counties of Ulster, and one of the 32 in the entire Ireland. It was one of the counties in the Kingdom of Ireland from 1613 onward before the partition of Ireland and after the portioning of the United Kingdom following the Acts of Union 1800. This county near the northwest shore of Lough Neagh occupies an area of 818 square miles. It has a population of about 247,132.
Londonderry just like the other counties in Northern Ireland has since 1972 ceased being used by the state in the local government administration. And after further reforms that took place in 2015, Londonderry came to be governed by three districts Derry and Strabane, Causeway Coast and Glens, and Mid-Ulster. Though no longer used for local government and administration, Londonderry is sometimes used in a cultural context such as in All-Ireland sporting and cultural events like Derry GAA. The County Londonderry flower is the purple saxifrage.
About the City of Derry
One of the cities in this county is Derry. Also known officially as Londonderry, it’s the second-largest city in Northern Ireland, the 5th-largest city on the island of Ireland, and the largest in the county. Derry is on the west bank of the River Foyle, spanned by one footbridge and two road bridges. Today, the city covers both banks. It has a population of about 100,000 (83,652) while the Derry Urban Area has a population of 110,000 (90,736) and it’s under the administration of Derry City and Strabane District Council which has both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.
Derry is close to the border of the neighboring County Donegal which has had a close link with County Londonderry for many centuries. The person traditionally credited with the founding of the original Derry is Saint Colmcille from Tír Chonaill. The city was in 2013 the inaugural UK City of Culture, the title it was awarded in 2010. There is some controversy in the naming of this city. So don’t get confused when you hear it being referred to as Londonderry. While unionists generally prefer to call it “Londonderry,” nationalists love its name as “Derry.”
Unfortunately, It’s Rated Ugly
With this in mind, let’s now get to the business of the day and see why many people are of the opinion that Londonderry is ugly. Derry was rated in a late 2022 study as the ugliest place to live in the UK. The study was carried out by Atlas Ceramics which analyzed several factors. Paramount among those factors are the number of boutique hotels, buildings and monuments listed, and interior designers and architecture in each UK destination. Of course, all of these are what combine to beautify a city.
While giving an insight into the raking of the city, the judges explained that Derry lands itself the unfortunate title because its building and streets lack the glamor attracting tourists. This Northern Irish city is the least aesthetic of all cities of its size and population in the UK. In the index used by the judges, it scored 1.79/10, no thanks to its interior designers that are lowest on the list. And these play a crucial role in creating and curating aesthetics for a city. When it gets to architects and listed buildings and monuments, it finds a place in the bottom three.

10 INTERESTING GRAVES in Derry City Cemetery!
Have you ever taken a tour of Derry's famous graveyard? ????
Derry City Cemetery is a cemetery based in the Creggan area of Derry, Northern Ireland. By 1867 the graveyards at St Columb's Cathedral, St. Augustine’s Church, and Long Tower Chapel had all stopped accepting ‘new’ burials leading to this cemetery becoming the main burial ground for the city's Protestant and Catholic population.
It is the final resting place for over 70,000 people and includes graves of victims of the cholera pandemics of the late 1800s, some of those who fought in WWII and, most famously, victims and casualties of the Troubles.

8 Worst Towns to Live in Northern Ireland
Let us put it in the right context before we take it so far. The expression “worst towns” here is going to be subjective and relative. This is because Northern Ireland is a generally good place to live. Regardless of how good a region is, however, some parts of it will be better than others. On the other hand, those parts of the region that are not regarded as the best are in that context not so good. And if all of the parts of a region are just good, the “least good” among them is invariably the worst. It is in that sense that we now want to show you the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
8. Ballymena
Let’s begin with Ballymena, a large town in County Antrim. The town with a population of more than 29,000 is the 8th-largest town in the region by population. But it’s also one of the worst towns to live in Northern Ireland. Gone are those days when the town was prosperous and when a lot of factories were providing job opportunities.
The town has now suffered from a gripping recession that not only deterred investment in manufacturing but also stressed out existing shopping centers. Though some attempts have been made to rejuvenate the town economically, the unemployment rate is still very high. The shopping centers are no longer bustling as they used to be due to badly reduced purchasing power and low demands in the town. Besides, there are several rough areas such as Harryville in the town. Generally, the town that hosts 7 towers lacks prosperity, though it’s one of the safest places to live for people with legitimate business dealings.
7. Lurgan
Lurgan is another large town on this list. It is in County Armagh near the southern shore of Lough Neagh. The town is located about 18 miles southwest of Belfast having been linked together by the M1 motorway. Additionally, the Belfast-Dublin railway line serves this town with a population of 28,634 within the Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon districts.
Even then, it is one of the worst towns. It is divided along the religious line, no thanks to the housing anomaly. This is especially apparent in its worst part. Many of the people born in the town would prefer not to live there if they are not landlords. Houses there are usually up for buying to own not to rent. That is why it’s not a good place to live in Northern Ireland for foreigners. You will get rental areas only on Ardboe Drive and Trasna Way. But in Pollock Drive and Grey Estate, you’re in for a completely different experience.
6. Strabane
We’re now in County Tyrone to find the town named Strabane. Lying on the east bank of the Foyle River, it had a population of 13,172. It is located roughly midway from Omagh, Derry, and Letterkenny. Strabane is also on this list of the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
Strabane has remained stuck to that unpopular tag not only in NI but also in the UK as a whole. For instance, out of 317 local authority areas in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it is the 8th worst to live, according to the research carried out by Channel 4. The research measured 5 criteria homebuyers always consider namely crime, education, employment, environment, and lifestyle. The town performed woefully in all of them. It has been ranking badly for livability for years on end.
