Russians’ favorite travel destination | Breaking Down Stereotypes about Dagestan
Due to pandemic and the closed borders because of it I started traveling more around my country. And I'm really happy about it. Russia is huge and there so many kinda wild places. For example, one month ago I visited Dagestan, and it's a completely different Russia comparing to Moscow and St Petersburg.
If you are from Europe or the United States, Dagestan may seem wild to you. This region of Russia lives by its own traditions and laws. But nevertheless Dagestan is something from another planet. The beauty around you takes your breath away. It is impossible to resist and not try the local incredibly delicious cuisine. And when you see the local lezginka dances it's very hard not to smile and not start dancing.
Wake up in the morning on the coast of the Caspian Sea, and in the evening fall asleep in the mountains near the canyon. Go horse riding in the morning in the mountains, and a couple of hours later climb a cliff on an unsafe ladder. Try local hot pies and listen to stories about local life. Dance lezginka with locals and talk about everything with interesting people - this is Dagestan. And many more.

Facts About Dagestan

Dagestan, officially the Republic of Dagestan is a republic of Russia situated in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe, along the Caspian Sea. It is located north of the Greater Caucasus, and is a part of the North Caucasian Federal District.
As the southernmost tip of Russia, the republic shares land borders with the countries of Azerbaijan and Georgia to its south and southwest; and borders the Russian republics of Chechnya and Kalmykia to its west and north, while having a border with Stavropol Krai to its northwest. Makhachkala is the capital and largest city; other chief cities are Derbent, Kizlyar, Izberbash, Kaspiysk and Buynaksk.
Dagestan is the largest republic in the northern Caucasus. Its tremendous ethnic diversity is attributed the combination of isolated valleys and its location at the crossroads between cultures in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The largest groups include the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezghin and Lakh. Most of these groups are Muslims who live in remote valleys. Their neighbors have traditionally viewed them with hostility.
Dagestan has the status of republic in Russia and has its own constitution and official languages. Republics in Russia are the home of its ethnic minorities (those who are not Russians), and usually one or two nationalities have a majority of the population in each republic. But in Dagestan, there are over 30 different nationalities (the largest of which are the Avar, Lak, Dargwa, Lezgian, and Tabasaran), and none of these form a majority. This is because the mountains in the region make it hard for people to move around. These people speak 30 different languages, but use Russian as their lingua franca to communicate between each other.
Makhachkal is the capital of Dagestan. Located o the Caspian Sea, it is a dirty, depressing place, full of loitering unemployed youths and crumbling apartment buildings and closed factories. Guns are everywhere, the sale of illegal caviar and stolen oil are the biggest businesses, and about the only thing to do is go to the dangerous casinos and bars or visit the art museum, museum of history and architecture museum.
Sights in Dagestan include Tscoch, a 10,000-year-old settlement, believed to be one of the oldest in the world; Derpent, the home of a lively carpet market; and Kubachi, a jewelry-making villages. There are also ruined forts, mosques, folk art museums, waterfalls, hot springs and old churches. Travelers should beware of violence and disease are problems in Dagestan,

Если вы собираетесь в Дагестан, то это видео поможет вам выбрать, что посмотреть в Дагестане. Перед нашей поездкой в Дагестан я сам искал списки мест, статьи, спрашивал людей про самые красивые места в Дагестане. Обычно называли 5-10 самых известных мест, и всё. И вот такого списка мне самому не хватало. Теперь я восполнил этот пробел.

Inside Chechnya | Russia's Most Infamous Republic (NOT what we expected!)
Welcome to Grozny, the capital of Chechnya (Chechen Republic). The Chechen Republic is a Muslim majority autonomous republic in the North Caucasus region of Russia. Unfortunately it is better known for the conflicts of the 1990's and early 2000's, which earnt Gronzy the title of 'the most destroyed city on earth'. Despite the stigma, and the Foreign Office warnings, the Chechnya of today is much changed from the one that hit the headlines a couple of decades back. We went in to get a look at real life in Chechnya and find out what Russia's most infamous republic is really like.

SOCHI RUSSIA | That Warm City on the South
Definitely a MUST VISIT place in Russia!
Where is Sochi - the city is situated along the Black Sea in Southern Russia, near the border with Abkhazia/Georgia. Sochi is Russia’s only subtropical resort city located in Krasnodar krai, 1,620 km south of Moscow (around 2,5 hours flight from Moscow). Sochi is informally referred to as the summer, the southern and resort “capital” of Russia.
Winter Olympic games of 2014 were held in Sochi. We will visit the Olympic Park that was constructed for the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics. Located in the Adlersky City District of Sochi.
And go to the mountains in Rosa Khutor - a unique all-the-year-round mountain-climatic resort of world class with cable ways and different entertainments.
...and we will visit Abkhazia, which is located only 2,5km from Sochi! :)

My accidental detour to Derbent. A very nice and historical city, with a towering fortress dating back to the middle ages and remains of buildings from different ages.
The population is cordial and friendly, and the effects of the USSR can be seeing everywhere.

Город расположен на западном берегу Каспийского моря, на реке Суходол, к северу от устья реки Рубас, там где горы Большого Кавказа ближе всего подходят к Каспийскому морю, оставляя лишь узкую трёхкилометровую полосу равнины; замыкая её, город образовывал так называемый Дербентский или Каспийский проход. Роль Дербента и Дербентского прохода в древности была велика, он был расположен в одном из самых стратегически важных и топографически удобном месте знаменитого Прикаспийского пути, связывающего Восточную Европу и Переднюю Азию.

Цал, Дербенд) — город на юге России в Республике Дагестан, расположен в 125 километрах к юго-востоку от Махачкалы, на берегу Каспийского моря, в отрогах Табасаранских гор Большого Кавказа. Вероятно, древнейший из ныне существующих городов России.
Административный центр Дербентского района (в состав которого не входит). Город республиканского значения, образует муниципальное образование город Дербент со статусом городского округа, как единственный населённый пункт в его составе.
Первые поселения возникли здесь в эпоху ранней бронзы — в конце 4 тысячелетия до н. э. Первое упоминание Каспийских ворот — наиболее древнего названия Дербента — относится к VI в. до н. э.: его приводит известный древнегреческий географ Гекатей Милетский. Современный город был основан в 438 году н. э. как персидская крепость, состоящая из расположенной на холме цитадели (Нарын-кала) и двух идущих от неё к морю каменных стен, которые запирали узкий (3 км) проход между морем и горами Кавказа и ограждали с севера и юга территорию города.

Tsal, Derbend) is a city in the south of Russia in the Republic of Dagestan, located 125 kilometers southeast of Makhachkala, on the shore of the Caspian Sea, in the spurs of the Tabasaran Mountains of the Greater Caucasus. Probably the oldest existing city in Russia.
The administrative center of the Derbent district (which it is not part of). A city of republican significance, forms the municipal formation of the city of Derbent with the status of an urban district, as the only settlement in its composition.
The first settlements appeared here in the Early Bronze Age — at the end of the 4th millennium BC. The first mention of the Caspian Gate — the most ancient name of Derbent — dates back to the VI century BC: it is cited by the famous ancient Greek geographer Hecateus of Miletus. The modern city was founded in 438 AD as a Persian fortress consisting of a citadel located on a hill (Naryn-kala) and two stone walls running from it to the sea, which blocked a narrow (3 km) passage between the sea and the Caucasus mountains and fenced the territory of the city from the north and south.
