The city’s extensive history began decades ago. It was founded in 1786, but ⅔ of the city burned down after General William T. Sherman entered in 1865. A few historic buildings managed to survive, such as the Hampton-Preston Mansion, Robert Mills House and Gardens, and South Carolina State House. They’re all worth visiting as a way to experience life during the Antebellum period.
Several museums celebrate South Carolina’s history and cultures such as the Columbia Museum of Art and the South Carolina State Museum. Many are interactive and entertaining enough for children, such as the famous EdVenture.

South Carolina’s Lake Murray Dam is a well-known attraction, but Columbia also has plenty of other beautiful natural spaces. They include Saluda Shoals, Congaree National Park, the Sesquecential State Park, and the Harbison State Forest, to name a few.

Sports-lovers will have a wonderful time in the city. The Williams-Bryce Stadium hosts a rowdy crowd, and the multi-purpose Segra Park is worth visiting as well. You’re certain to find a game or event that you’ll enjoy in one of them.

Unique shops such as the Mast General Store offer all the supplies you could ever need for your trip, especially if you plan to camp out in one of the city’s parks. The farmers’ markets on the weekends offer a large selection of local produce. You can also enjoy delicious local food at restaurants such as Villa Tronco and Oyster Bar Columbia.

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA - 4K Drone Video Tour

Columbia is a nature-lover's dream. Many beautiful state and local parks, and a national park just 25 minutes south. Even the downtown area is green and clean. While it may not be the most exciting city when UofSC isn't in session, there's still plenty for visitors to explore. Here's a little collection of what we suggest seeing:

Riverfront Park is a 2.5 mile trail running along the historic Columbia Canal. It is a beautiful portion of the Palmetto Trail - which stretches the entire length of South Carolina (Greenville to Charleston). To access the park, visitors must traverse a pre-industrial era railway bridge which locals converted into a pedestrian walkway. The park features sixty picnic tables, hammocks and benches and markers along the trail make it easy to measure your progress along the way.

Originally the Babcock Building portion of the South Carolina Mental Health Hospital was designed in 1858. It was delayed by the U.S. Civil War when Columbia was a hotbed for confederate activity. In the rebuilding of Columbia, it was finally completed in 1885, and called the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum and served as the American south's largest psychiatric hospital for more than 50 years. The Babcock Building was officially closed in 2001 and many groups are petitioning for permanent historic designation. Last year, a major fire destroyed the roof and will cost more than $400,000 to repair. While the entire grounds are fenced and private security is posted outside 24/7, many adventurers and a few drone pilots take the risk to get a look at the creepy insides left behind by those suffering from mental illnesses. In its more than one and a half centuries of operation, more than one million patients roamed these halls and for many it was where they spent their last days. If you’re brave enough to take a look, you better hurry: The area is being demolished for apartments.

The word Sesquicentennial means 150th anniversary. That’s when the US Department of the Interior gave this park to the state of South Carolina in celebration of the state’s 150th anniversary of statehood. This gorgeous State Park is more than 1,400 acres of beautiful woodlands surrounding the Sesquicentennial pond. It features an advanced mountain biking trail and hiking trails that vary from moderate intensity to stroller-friendly. Inside, adventurers can enjoy kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Families will love the child’s splash pad and picnic spaces. If you want to sleep under the stars, this is the perfect place. More than 85 RV sites and tent spaces are available for reservation and midnight exploration off the loop trail definitely makes the Sesquicentennial State Park worth the trip.

Built in 1875 to replace the old State House which was destroyed in the 'Burning of Columbia' during the Civil War, this 130,000 square feet building houses the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and the state’s representative body called the General Assembly. This site was designated a national historic landmark in 1976 for its incredible roots in the Civil War, Reconstruction Era and Civil Rights activity. Since then, a confederate battle flag flew on the building's dome until being removed in 2015 amid contentious protests. The grounds now feature 13 statues and monuments, including those of George Washington, confederate soldiers, and African Americans. Regardless of political beliefs, the grounds are incredibly beautiful and well-kept and definitely worth a visit when in Columbia.

An endless view of innumerable trees make up this 26,000 acre national park surrounding the Congaree River. Originally owned by logging magnates, this entire area was slated to be cut down before being designated worthy of preservation. Old Growth Forests used to stretch from here through west Texas; but, now, Congaree is the largest and one of the last left standing. Now Congaree is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to tens of thousands of species of plants, animals and fungi, making it one of the top 10 most biodiverse portions of the entire United States. You’ll see thousands of roots rising up from the ground. These are called ‘knees’ and botanists hypothesize their purpose is stability, because this entire area is a perpetually moving river. In here, you’ll find species not found anywhere else and, if you’re lucky enough, spotted owls and wild hogs. Old growth forest trees have fallen all throughout the park; but trails and boardwalks throughout the trek ensure you can see it all in one day; but camp sites are available for extended trips.

The Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula is located in northeastern North Carolina, inshore of Nags Head and the Outer Banks in the Inner Banks region. The peninsula is framed by Albemarle Sound to the north, Alligator River to the east, and the Scuppernong River to the west. In addition to the Scuppernong River, Tyrrell County is bordered on the north by the Albemarle Sound, one of the East Coast's largest estuarine systems, and to the east by the Alligator River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), all land.
Tyrrell County was Named for Sir John Tyrrell, one of the Lords Proprietors of the Carolina colony. Tyrrell County's original boundaries originally stretched westward from Roanoke Island to near present-day Tarboro. In 1870 the territory was divided and resulted in what is now known as Tyrrell, Martin, Washington, and Dare counties. Elizabethtown, later renamed Columbia, was established on the banks of the Scuppernong River in 1793 and became the Tyrrell County seat in 1799.

Somerset Place State Historic Site, a representative antebellum plantation dating from 1785, is located near Columbia. Beginning in 1829, this was home to two generations of the Collins family-Josiah Collins III, his wife Mary, and their six sons. It was also home to more than three hundred enslaved men, women, and children of African descent whose lives and work are interpreted here as well. Somerset Place offers an insightful view of plantation life during the antebellum period.

Columbia SC 4K /South Carolina's Capital (DJI Mavic Air 2 Drone Footage) The Soda City!!

Columbia is the capital of the U.S. state of South Carolina. With a population of 136,632 as of the 2020 U.S. Census, it is the second-largest city in South Carolina. The city serves as the county seat of Richland County, and a portion of the city extends into neighboring Lexington County. It is the center of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 829,470 and is the 72nd-largest metropolitan statistical area in the nation. The name Columbia is a poetic term used for the United States, derived from the name of Christopher Columbus, who explored for the Spanish Crown. Columbia is often abbreviated as Cola, leading to its nickname as Soda City.

The city is located about 13 miles (21 km) northwest of the geographic center of South Carolina, and is the primary city of the Midlands region of the state. It lies at the confluence of the Saluda River and the Broad River, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River. As the state capital, Columbia is the site of the South Carolina State House, the center of government for the state. In 1860, the South Carolina Secession Convention took place in Columbia; delegates voted for secession, making South Carolina the first state to leave the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.

Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship public university and the largest in the state. The area has benefited from Congressional support for Southern military installations. Columbia is the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. Twenty miles to the east of the city is McEntire Joint National Guard Base, which is operated by the U.S. Air Force and is used as a training base for the 169th Fighter Wing of the South Carolina Air National Guard.

In May 1540, a Spanish expedition led by Hernando de Soto traversed what is now Columbia while moving northward on exploration of the interior of the Southeast. The expedition produced the earliest written historical records of this area, which was part of the regional Cofitachequi chiefdom of the Mississippian culture.

During the colonial era, European settlers encountered the Congaree in this area, who inhabited several villages along the Congaree River. The settlers established a frontier fort and fur trading post named after the Congaree, on the west bank of the Congaree River. It was at the fall line and the head of navigation in the Santee River system.

In 1754 the colonial government in South Carolina established a ferry to connect the fort with the growing European settlements on the higher ground on the east bank.

Like many other significant early settlements in colonial America, Columbia is on the fall line of the Piedmont region. The fall line is often marked by rapids at the places where the river cuts sharply down to lower levels in the Tidewater or Low Country of the coastal plain. Beyond the fall line, the river is unnavigable for boats sailing upstream. Entrepreneurs and later industrialists established mills in such areas, as the water flowing downriver, often over falls, provided power to run equipment.

After the American Revolutionary War and United States independence, State Senator John Lewis Gervais of the town of Ninety Six introduced a bill that was approved by the legislature on March 22, 1786, to create a new state capital. Considerable argument occurred over the name for the new city. According to published accounts, Senator Gervais said he hoped that in this town we should find refuge under the wings of COLUMBIA, for that was the name which he wished it to be called. One legislator insisted on the name Washington, but Columbia won by a vote of 11–7 in the state senate.

The site was chosen as the new state capital in 1786 due to its central location in the state. The State Legislature first met there in 1790. After remaining under the direct government of the legislature for the first two decades of its existence, Columbia was incorporated as a village in 1805 and then as a city in 1854.

Thanks to Wikipedia!!

Hope you enjoyed the views of South Carolina's State Capital. Hope you enjoyed the views from a bird's eye View!

PrimeTrains - Columbia, South Carolina - Amtrak Full Station Tour

We traveled to the state capitol of South Carolina, Columbia and toured the Amtrak Station there. What a beautiful city this is. The station was small, but seemed adequate for the amount of passengers they handle.

Surrounded by City, quiet escape to enjoy nature. Very family friendly. Sesquicentennial State Park.

I'd stay here again. A good clean park with plenty of biking and hiking. You can do fishing and rent a canoe or kayak at the lake. Being close to town this allowed us to explore Columbia. The Museum is just awesome.
